Krbava Field 1493 - Croatia’s Darkest Medieval Defeat - Ottoman History

[00:00:05]The year is 1493. The morning mist clings to  the Croatian fields of Krbava as a young peasant watches from the hills, his hands still stained  with soil instead of blood. He came to tend his land, but today, armies have come instead.  Croatian knights gather beneath shining banners, confident and proud, while across the  plain the Ottoman cavalry waits in silence, like a storm about to break. The  ground trembles as thousands march, and the peasant realizes he is witnessing  something far greater than war, the fate of his homeland. What begins with trumpets  and courage will end in confusion, fear, and tragedy. What followed was to be one of  the greatest disasters in Croatian history.

[00:00:58]War in Hungary & the Battle of Krbava (1490-1493): The year was 1491. After a full decade on the throne, Sultan Bayezid II had managed to quell  the storms that had occupied much of his early reign. His rebel half-brother Cem was far off,  locked in Western Europe, and his government filled with loyal officials of non-devsrhirme  origin. The borders of the empire were stable and secure. The only hiccup during his reign so  far was the disastrous war against the Mamluks, but even in defeat, the status quo had largely  been preserved. However, the year 1491 was also the year the seven-year truce between the Ottoman  and Hungarian realms was set to expire. In 1484, King Matthias Corvinus signed a truce to halt the  ceaseless raiding of his lands by Ottoman akincis, who had devastated the southern and western  portions of his kingdom for many decades.

[00:02:24]Nevertheless, before a new truce could  be signed, the Hungarian king had died in 1490 without a legal male heir, thus  sparking a gathering of the royal diet.

[00:02:36]After much tempestuous debate, King Władysław of  Bohemia, whose mother was the sister of Matthias’s predecessor, was elected the new monarch by the  Hungarian nobility. John Corvinus, Matthias’s illegitimate son and intended heir, was defeated  during the diet as the Hungarian nobility believed that the weak Władysław would restore their  rights and powers, which had been stripped away during the reign of the mighty Matthias Corvinus.  They were to be proven right. Upon taking power, Władysław immediately rewarded the nobility for  his election by disbanding the central state apparatus across the realm, including the sale  of royal estates, thereby decentralizing power to local Hungarian magnates. The taxes that had  paid for Corvinus’s famous Black Army were also revoked, leading to the disbanding of the army  that had brought the kingdom so many victories during the last three decades. In only a matter  of months, the many reforms of Matthias Corvinus were undone, marking the beginning of the slow  decline of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom.

[00:03:38]But not everyone was happy with the royal diet's  decision to elect Władysław as king. Two other claimants made their bid for the throne the same  year of the diet: King Maximilian of Germany, son of Holy Roman Emperor Fredrick III, and  Władysław’s own brother, Prince John Albert of Poland. The pair invaded Hungary in 1490, and  what followed was a bloody war of succession for the Hungarian throne. With the truce with  Hungary having expired in 1491 and the kingdom in political turmoil, Ottoman raids resumed in full  force at the Sultan's orders. Lands up to Carniola were brutally sacked, and its inhabitants were  dragged off to slavery. Despite great destruction, the raiding party of Mihaloglu Hasan Bey was  caught in a deadly ambush near the town of Vrpile during the fall of 1491 while returning  to friendly territory. Many Ottoman akincis were killed during the engagement, and their  captives were released alongside their spoils.

[00:04:37]However, this defeat did not deter Sultan  Bayezid from deciding that now was the time to seize the strategic Hungarian border fortress  of Belgrade. The fortified city was still seen as the gateway to central Europe and had been the  site of one of Mehmed the Conqueror's greatest defeats in 1456. During the spring of 1492,  the imperial army marched out from the capital, determined to seize the fortress for once and  for all. Nonetheless, upon entering Sofia, the sultan decided to cancel his planned march on  Belgrade after learning that the succession crisis in Hungary had ended. Earlier in the year, both  Maximilian and John Albert reannounced their claim to the throne and made peace with Władysław after  a series of military defeats and lack of funds to continue their wars. As a result, in order to  avoid personal defeat, the sultan assigned the governor of Smederevo, Hadim Suleyman Pasha, to  lead a relatively minor attack on Belgrade while he sent the remainder of his forces on raids  into Transylvania, Croatia, and Carinthia.

[00:05:37]Further raids into Hungary commenced the  following year as Hadım Yakup Pasha became governor of Bosnia. In the summer of 1493, he  assembled a force of about 8,000 akıncıs and launched an attack on Jajce, though the  fortress resisted capture. From there, the raiders moved northwest into Carniola and  Styria, devastating the countryside through plunder and terror. Luckily for the raiders,  internal conflict weakened Croatian defences.

[00:06:03]A struggle had broken out between the newly  appointed Ban of Croatia, Emerik Derenčin, and the powerful Croatian Frankopan noble  family over control of the town of Senj and its nearby territories. After learning that the  Frankopans had besieged the royal city of Senj, King Władysław sent a force under Derenčin  to restore order. But, not wanting to spill the blood of his fellow countrymen, the Ban  instead successfully appealed to the rebels, convincing them to join him against  the marauding Ottoman invaders.

[00:06:34]As the Ottomans withdrew from their northern  raids, they attacked and sacked Modruš in northern Lika, a possession of the Frankopan  family. Ban Derenčin and the Frankopans decided to intercept the Ottoman force and assembled an  army estimated at around 3,000 cavalry and 8,000 infantry drawn from across Croatia. Nonetheless,  strategic disagreements quickly emerged among the Croatian commanders. Ivan Frankopan Cetinski  suggested setting an ambush in nearby ravines and mountainous areas, thinking it would  reduce the mobility of the light Ottoman horsemen. Ban Derenčin dismissed this idea,  considering it cowardly, and insisted on facing the Turks in open combat. After extensive  discussion, Derenčin’s strategy was chosen, and the Croatian army readied itself to fight  on the open plains of Krbava Field near Udbina.

[00:07:24]The Ottomans approached Krbava Field  via the narrow Gorica mountain pass, avoiding the Vrpile pass where they had been  defeated before. It was during this march that Hadım Yakup Pasha spotted the enemy force ahead of  him, blocking his path home. The Ottoman governor quickly made ready for battle, delivering a speech  to motivate his men and allegedly ordering the execution of his Christian captives to prevent a  potential uprising during the battle. Yakup also deployed around 3,000 of his best cavalrymen  into hidden positions in the nearby forests to his south. He planned to use these units to  ambush the enemy's flanks when the time was right.

[00:08:03]The Croatian army, comprising various infantry  and cavalry units, initially positioned itself along the eastern slopes of Krbava Field near the  village of Visuć. Ban Emerik Derenčin and Franjo Berislavić led the right wing; Ivan Frankopan led  the center; and Nikola and Bernardin Frankopan led the left wing. The Ottoman host was similarly  positioned, with Ismail Bey leading the right wing, Mehmed Bey leading the left wing, and Hadım  Yakup Pasha and Ishak Bey Kraloğlu, son of former Bosnian king Stephen Thomas, leading the center. Ismail Bey started the battle by attacking the Croatian left flank. As a result, the entire  Croatian army was lured off its hilltop position and engaged in a bloody melee against the foe.  At first, the Croatians pushed the Ottomans back, but Yakup Pasha then ordered a feigned  retreat. Thinking they were close to victory, Croatian soldiers chased after the fleeing Ottoman  host, unknowingly walking into their trap. At this moment, the concealed Ottoman cavalry emerged  from the wooded area, crossed the Krbava River, and executed a devastating charge to the  Croatian rear and flank. Concurrently, Yakup Pasha’s main forces initiated a renewed  frontal assault. The Croatian army faced attacks from multiple directions, leading to confusion  and eventual collapse. Bernardin Frankopan’s left flank was unable to withstand the sustained  assault by the Ottoman light cavalry and commenced a retreat. The majority of the Croatian  infantry became encircled and unable to escape. The Battle of Krbava lasted only three  hours and ended in a decisive Ottoman victory.

[00:09:39]Ban Emerik Derenčin was reportedly  unhorsed during combat and captured; he later died in captivity. Many  leading Croatian nobles were killed, including Ivan Frankopan himself. Nikola Frankopan  was captured but later ransomed and released, while Bernardin Frankopan and Franjo  Berislavić survived. Only a small number of Croatian soldiers managed to reach safety  in the nearby fortified town of Udbina. While the Ottoman army had lost only 1,000 men in the  battle, the Croatian army had lost over 5,000, and another 1,500 were captured. The defeat  proved catastrophic for the Croatian leadership and marked one of the most devastating losses  in Croatian history. By the end of the year, Hadım Yakup Pasha’s army returned to friendly  territory in triumph and with vast spoils of war.

[00:10:29]War in Moldavia and Poland (1487-1499): While Ottoman raiders had won a great victory in Croatia, new developments for Bayezid arose  on the opposite shores of the Balkan peninsula.

[00:10:36]After the Ottoman conquest of the Black Sea  fortresses of Akkerman and Kilia in 1484, Poland had promised to aid Stephen the Great of  Moldavia in his war against the Sublime Porte.

[00:10:47]With the fall of Akkerman and Kilia to Muslim  powers, Poland feared that its access to the Black Sea would be completely severed,  and so was ready to make war. In 1487, a Crimean raiding party was routed at the  Battle of Kopystzyn in Podolia by the Polish army of Prince John Albert. But with Moldavia’s  submission to Turkish vassalage that same year and withdrawing itself from the military conflict,  Poland under King Casimir IV concluded a two-year truce with the Sultan. While the Ottomans were  preoccupied with the Mamluks during this period, the peace with Poland surprisingly held together  for almost four years. However, in 1491, another Crimean raiding party entered Polish-Lithuanian  lands but was defeated at the Battle of Zaslaw. It became evident to the Polish court that military  action had to be taken if it ever wanted to secure its southern borders from Muslim incursions. By 1494, John Albert ascended to the Polish throne and began talks with his  brother, King Władysław II of Hungary, to form a crusade against the Ottomans. But such  coordination among the states failed to take root, as Władysław staunchly opposed John’s plan  to place their brother, Prince Sigismund, on the Moldavian throne. The pair had agreed that  Stephan was too untrustworthy and independent to be a loyal vassal to either kingdom, but the real  question was which kingdom would be the vassal lord of the principality. Both Hungary and Poland  sought a Black Sea coastline to gain access to the region's lucrative maritime trade and thus  sought to take Moldavia for themselves. This question about the vassal authority proved to be  the decisive nail in the coffin for the crusade, as Władysław withdrew his support for such a  campaign against the Turks in the following years.

[00:12:31]In 1497, after years of gathering funds to build a  large army, John invaded Moldavia. This was to be the King's initial step in his broader strategy  to confront the Ottomans. The Polish monarch dreamed of becoming a champion of Christendom  like John Hunyadi or Skanderbeg before him, and even had ambitions to march south to restore  Constantinople to Christian hands. He began his campaign by first besieging the Moldavian capital  of Suceava in full force. This, however, proved to be the high point of John’s campaign. Luckily for  Stephan, his vassalage to the sultan brought with it military allies in the form of 8,000 Wallachian  infantry, 1,000 Crimean Tatar light cavalry, and even a small contingent of 600 jannisaries.  In a short three-day skirmish, Stephan broke the siege through guerrilla tactics and was  reinforced with a further 12,000 Transylvanian mercenaries from Hungary. After winning a decisive  victory, the Moldavian voivode set out against the retreating Polish army and ambushed and scattered  its rearguard at the Battle of Cosmin’s Forest. In a single military campaign, thousands of Poles and  their allies were killed, and Moldavia remained firmly under Ottoman influence. The crusade  that aimed to reach Constantinople was defeated before it could even reach the Ottoman border. With Polish forces scattered, Sultan Bayezid decided to go on the offensive and ordered raids  against the kingdom to follow up on Stephan’s two great victories. In 1498, Malkoçoğlu Bali  Bey led one of the largest Ottoman raiding operations in history. In a short campaign of  terror, the towns of Bratslav, Sambir, Lviv, and Jaroslaw were sacked as accompanying Crimean  Tatar raids into Podolia ransacked the entire region. Never had Ottoman raiders ventured so far  north before, and never before had so much spoils been gained. The entire countryside burned,  churches looted, and peasants enslaved during this raiding expedition. The destructive raids  of 1498 had shocked the royal court in Krakow, prompting the walls of the Polish capital to  be hastily rebuilt and reinforced. Seeing his southern lands scorched and militarily defeated,  King John concluded peace with Stephan and Bayezid by the end of 1499. The first Ottoman-Polish War  had been a decisive victory for the Sublime Porte.

[00:14:52]Death of Cem (1490-1495): While Bayezid II was winning victories in Croatia and Poland, he still had  to contend with his exiled half-brother, Cem, who was still tucked away in the care of the Pope.  After years of travelling around the Mediterranean world, Cem had finally ended up in the care of the  Papal States. Large sums of money were still being paid by the Sublime Porte to the Vatican to keep  the rogue Ottoman prince in custody and prevent another civil war. When Pope Innocent VIII died  in 1492, he was replaced by Pope Alexander VI, a nepotistic scion of the Borgia clan with at  least eight children and now Cem’s new jailor.

[00:15:29]The new Pope continued his predecessor's deal  with Bayezid and maintained custody of the prince, demonstrating the arrangement's  continuity despite leadership changes.

[00:15:40]But during his rule, Alexander became increasingly  entangled in broader European conflicts. By the early 1490s, Italy was entering a period of  intense political turmoil that would culminate in the Italian Wars. Rivalries among France,  the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and Italian states created opportunities for ambitious rulers  seeking legitimacy or strategic advantage.

[00:16:04]King Charles VIII of France invaded Italy in  1494, seeing himself as the second Charlemagne, who would one day reclaim Constantinople and  the Holy Land for Christendom. For this purpose, as his army passed through the Papal lands,  Alexander turned Cem over into the King’s care. After his long exile, Cem was finally  in the hands of a powerful Christian monarch, as he had planned; for the first time in a decade,  the prince had hope. But Cem would accompany Charles no further than Naples. By the time the  French army seized Capua at the start of 1495, Cem was laid so low by illness that he needed  to be carried on a stretcher. The French blamed Pope Alexander, claiming that the pontiff had  given Cem a slow-acting poison in Rome. Others suspected it was the work of Bayezid, who, in the  past, had orchestrated many assassination attempts on the Ottoman prince. But by illness or poison,  Cem Sultan died on February 25th at the age of thirty-five, accompanied by the companions that  had followed him so faithfully through unfriendly foreign lands. Cem’s death effectively ended any  lingering possibility that he might be used as a rival claimant to the Ottoman throne. For Sultan  Bayezid, the removal of this potential threat brought relief and eliminated a persistent source  of diplomatic vulnerability. After his death, negotiations eventually led to the return of his  remains to Ottoman lands, where he was buried in Bursa. Cem’s legacy lies in his unique role as a  displaced Ottoman prince whose captivity reshaped late fifteenth-century diplomacy between  the Ottomans and Europe. Although he never regained power, his captivity forced Bayezid  to maintain costly diplomatic arrangements and highlighted the growing interconnectedness  of Ottoman and European political spheres.

[00:17:50]Cem also became a cultural figure, remembered  in European literature and art as an exotic princely captive, while in Ottoman memory he  represented the dangers of dynastic conflict.

[00:18:03]Jewish Migration (1492): Although major battles across the Balkans had been won during the 1490s, perhaps  the most enduring Ottoman development of the decade originated in faraway lands across the  Mediterranean. By the late fifteenth century, Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile  sought to unify Spain religiously following the completion of the Reconquista with the conquest  of the Islamic Emirate of Granada in 1492.

[00:18:28]Religious uniformity was viewed as essential  to political consolidation and stability.

[00:18:33]This atmosphere culminated in the Alhambra  Decree, which ordered all practicing Jews in Spain to convert to Christianity or  leave the kingdom within a few months.

[00:18:45]Consequently, Bayezid II dispatched the Ottoman  Navy to Spain in 1492 to facilitate the safe evacuation of the refugees to Ottoman territories.  Proclamations were issued throughout the Empire instructing that the refugees should be received  with hospitality. The refugees were granted permission to settle within the Ottoman Empire and  to acquire Ottoman citizenship. Furthermore, he criticized the actions of Ferdinand II of Aragon  and Isabella I of Castile in expelling a group of individuals who were highly beneficial to their  subjects. To one of his courtiers, Bayezid is said to have said, “You venture to call Ferdinand  a wise ruler, but he has impoverished his own country and enriched mine!” Jewish refugees  settled in major Ottoman cities, including Constantinople, Edirne, Bursa, Thessalonica,  Izmir, and other commercial centers. Thessalonica, in particular, emerged as a prominent hub of  Jewish life, and over time, its Jewish population grew so large that the city became one of the most  significant Jewish centers in the Mediterranean world. Within the Ottoman millet system formalized  under Mehmed II, Jewish communities maintained religious autonomy under their own leaders  and were allowed to practice their religion, operate communal institutions, and engage in  commerce. Compared with the persecution they had faced in Spain, many refugees experienced greater  stability and opportunity under Bayezid’s rule.

[00:20:11]Sephardic Jewish refugees played a significant  role in Ottoman economic life. Their expertise in international trade strengthened commercial ties  between the Ottoman Empire and Western Europe.

[00:20:23]Jewish merchants facilitated the movement of  goods such as textiles, spices, and metals, contributing to the growth of Mediterranean  commerce. Cultural traditions, including literature, music, and religious scholarship,  flourished within Sephardic communities, creating a vibrant cultural legacy that lasted for  centuries. Famous Jewish physicians, such as Moses Hamon, and scholars found employment in Ottoman  courts and urban centers, enhancing intellectual exchange. Jewish printers such as David and Samuel  ibn Nahmias established the first printing presses in the Ottoman Empire in 1493. In a single policy  move, Sultan Bayezid II had ensured a boost to his empire's economic prosperity for generations  to come. However, right as the empire seemed to have settled itself in a age of prosperity  and peace, new challenges on the horizon would break Bayezid’s vision for the future.
