Authorities have canceled flights and ferry services across the region while bus and rail operations have also been suspended in several areas. Naha Airport, Okinawa's main domestic and international gateway, remain closed as the storm approached.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that the wind gusts could reach up to 160 km per hour with some forecast suggesting even stronger gusts in exposed areas.
According to local reports, the storm has already knocked out power to more than 7,000 households across Okinawa.
