The Mystery of Earth's First Life Forms

[00:00:00]And that's where this particular discovery comes into play uh because you know, one of the the big questions in origin of life research is when did life appear on Earth and what was it what were the very first life forms like on Earth?

[00:00:16]And there are are, you know, some remarkable evidence from, you know, the oldest rock formations on Earth that clearly life was present 3.8 billion years ago. This is from a number of geochemical signatures.

[00:00:30]Uh also, there are microfossils. There are macroscopic fossils, stromatolites, micro fossils of microbial mats. There might even be uh indications that life originated even earlier than 3.8 billion years.

[00:00:46]>> Yeah, there there's some isolated places on the Earth. I think in northern Canada where they say maybe as far back as 4.0 billion years, but it is disputed evidence. By the time you get to 3.8, it's not disputed anymore. That's right.

[00:01:00]>> And moreover, that's when you got life continuously existing on the Earth rather than say sporadic appearances.

[00:01:07]And and and so from that geochemical evidence, there's a very interesting picture that starts to emerge that I think is problematic for chemical evolutionary scenarios, but fits with the notion that there is a creator and that is life seems to appear very early uh without any kind of real time for chemical evolution to transpire. The very first life forms appear to be single-celled, but they are biochemically and metabolically quite complex.

[00:01:37]And there appears to be a diversity of life on Earth where there's a number of different metabolic lifestyles that seem to be present on the Earth.

[00:01:46]>> So not just one species of bacteria.

[00:01:48]Yes, exactly. And and that's the type of signature that you would expect for a creator.

[00:01:54]But there's still, you know, a lot of questions as to what was the metabolism like. There are geochemical signatures that are characteristic of oxygenic photosynthesis and anoxygenic photosynthesis, sulfate reduction, other types of chemoautotrophic pathways, but again, these the the evidence is highly suggestive, but it's not conclusive open and shut. And along those lines, one of those pieces of evidence is uh nitrogen 15 enrichment in rocks that dated as far back as 3.2 billion years ago, and these are uh in a range that you would expect to for uh nitrogenase activity, which is an enzyme that converts nitrogen in the atmosphere into ammonia, which is a critical process for making nitrogen bioavailable.

[00:02:49]Um the that signature suggests nitrogenase activity was present.

[00:02:54]Uh it's a in association with microbial mats, which further gives support for it. Other more recent uh signatures like that uh in rocks that are 2 billion, 2 and 1/2 billion years in age are taken as evidence for nitrogenase activity, but it's still again there there's still some uncertainty
