Kalyana (spiritual perfection) differs fundamentally between Mayavadi and Vishnava philosophies: Mayavadis believe that upon freedom from material contamination, the living entity merges into the Supreme (Brahman), losing individuality, while Vishnavas understand that the living entity maintains eternal individuality as the servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Krishna), achieving both oneness and distinct identity through devotional service.

Kanto chapter 20 text 10.
Shantim may some of K volume of Hakai William Shante.
ladies.
One who is disassociated from the material modes of nature.
Samyak equal whose vision uncontaminated aa whose mind or heart shantim peace may my some of us tum equal situation.
Spirit freedom from material contamination.
Ashnut achieves.
When the heart is cleansed of all material contamination, the devotees mind becomes broader and transparent and he can see things equally.
At that stage of life there is peace and one who is and one is situated equally with me as such and vigra.
per the Mayavad conception of Kyalia and that of the Vishnav community is different.
The Mayavadi the Mayavadi thinks that as soon as one is free from all material contamination he is merged into the existence of the supreme.
The Vishnav philosopher's conception of kyolya is different.
He understands both his position and the position of the supreme personality of godhead in the uncontaminated condition. The living entity understands that he is the eternal servtor of the supreme and that is called Brahman realization.
the spiritual perfection of the living entity.
This rapport is very easily achieved as stated in the Bhagavad Gita. When one is engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Lord, he is immediately situated on the transcendental platform of Kyala or Brahma.
Fore hungry.
Gurudishna Krishna abande.
Fore Hurry Krishna, H Krishna Krishna Krishna Hama Hama hurry hurry shant may some of his some of us from hakai Lord Vishnu is speaking to Pratum Maharaj and the focus of the perport is this word kyolya.
Uh, kyolya the kyolya comes from cable.
From cable we get kya.
Kala means one only.
It's just like we say only juice. That means there's no no contamination, nothing else, no additives, no mixture, purely juice.
Soaka when one has given up association with the modes of material nature and the heart is uh free from these things.
One becomes broad-minded. One becomes transparent in one's vision.
He sees uh all living beings equally everything equally shant he's situated like me what is that in the nearsh someone know the near when one is on the platform of Krishna consciousness then nearsha he's freed from the defects of material existence sum brahma is the same as brahma or the absolute truth brahman Therefore, he's situated in the absolute truth.
There's it's notable Brahman taste. He's situated in Brahma.
That means he's uh maintains his individuality.
This Brahma is in that Brahma. Among all the eternals there's one supreme eternal among all the living beings there's one supreme living being similarly Brahma and param braha brahasmi I'm also braha spirit but I'm not param braha Arjun says to Krishna, you're the paramha.
I accept you as Brahma. Not only I accept you a rish all the rishies also accept you.
us to the naruni and others de of vibe of so I also accept you as the param braha param braha means that there must be some difference if we say this is the best product it means it must be different from other products if we say New New York City is the best city. It must be different from other cities. Or if we say it's the biggest and it must be different.
It's the same. Other cities are also cities.
But New York is the biggest city or most influential or whatever designation you might want to give.
So kyoly the brahma ky there's oneness it's not and theads are very strong on this because every living entity is thinking I'm this body I'm not different from matter this is my wife this is my home this is my money this is my this that we're all identifying falsely with uh matter and working very hard under that misconception.
We're thinking we're doing everything by our own power.
So many illusions coming from that illusion that we're different in nature from Krishna that we're yes that we belong to this material energy.
This is the essence of false ego.
Instead of looking toward the spiritual energy and identifying ourselves with Krishna, we look toward the material energy and identify ourselves with matter.
So we have to revive our spiritual nature.
So what does that mean? The end of the ishwa panishad I'm also Brahma though the upanishads want to not only want to they emphasize they do emphasize that oneness between the living entity and the absolute truth.
But uh there are differences also uh among all the absolutes there's one supreme absolute.
So the and there are many statements in the upanisha there are two birds sitting in the heart in the tree of the heart one tasting the fruits of the tree and the other just watching.
So there's one there's oneness and at the same time there's individuality.
The my body theory praad sums up in a sentence the my body thinks that as soon as one is free from all material contamination he's merged into the existence of the supreme.
In other words, he thinks the only difference between me and God is that at the present moment I'm covered by the material energy.
But soon as that covering is gone, that's it.
The air in the pot merge becomes one with the air outside the pot.
As soon as I'm free from material influence, then I'm not different from Brahma or Bhagavan because Bhagavan is only a manifestation of Brahma.
This is their idea.
Of course, if I'm covered by the material energy, how has that happened?
If I'm Brahma in the sense of being God, how have I come under the influence of the material nature that they can't say?
So the living the the vishnabas understand themselves and they understand Krishna and they understand their relationship with Krishna.
That's uh and still there and ka there's oneness there's freedom from contamination but individuality is not destroyed it remains and in that individuality the living being understands that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and I'm Krishna's servant Jupo Krishna Nityas that's the perfection of Brahman realization British By devotional service, one comes to the platform of Brahma Brahma platform.
But on that platform uh that Brahma comes from Krishna or depends on Krishna.
Krishna says I'm the basis of Brahma.
Krishna doesn't say I come from Brahma.
Only the abi the unintelligent person thinks that Krishna was unmanifest that he's come from the unmanifest now he's manifest also means material nature in its element supplying capacity and the May thinks that the personality of godhead has assumed a body provided by material energy they don't know the transcendental nature of Krishna and therefore they commit offenses by such speculative notions.
Um kyomak ashnut ashnut means one achieves or it means one enjoys.
Let's see.
So one enjoys but how can one enjoy if one relinquished one's individuality or if one's illusory individuality has now dissolved.
And where's the question of enjoyment?
Individuality takes place in uh when there's a person to rather enjoyment takes place when there's a person to enjoy it to enjoy something.
or indivi enjoyment takes place in relationships even we have experience when we're alone only alone there's not much enjoyment it's even a form of punishment solitary confinement to be alone is a kind of punishment even the person who's alone he wants to read and associate with author or fictional characters or he doesn't want to be absolutely alone and if he is alone then he remembers others thinks of others but on the spiritual platform the mayadis aspire for absolute oneness and they lose their actual opportunity to enjoy in relationship with Krishna.
Krishna is the supreme enjoyer.
And when we act in relationship to Krishna, then we also enjoy by serving.
Those who want to enjoy by exploiting the resources of mere material nature will be miserable.
And those who want to enjoy by extinguishing their own existence it's not exactly enjoyment but if I can't enjoy then let me give up all qualities all name form quality pastimes everything let me give up everything and when there's nothing left then I'll be free from suffering but freedom from suffer Suffering is not enjoyment.
Freedom from suffering is less.
So one has to go beyond that platform actually to enjoy.
Maybe I'll stop here. H Krishna Har Krishna Krishna Krishna. H some questions, comments. Yes.
Hi Krishna. Maharaj Maharaj.
You were explaining about one of the um arguments that Mayavadi quotes of air inside the pot and air outside the pot.
So how should we confront it? How should we defeat?
>> How do we deal with this example that when you break the pot there's no difference between the air outside and the air inside? We respond by saying that analogies should have uh what's the word? um they should correspond to the situation to which we wish to cite them as analogists.
So we say that the subway here in New York is something like the underground in London.
There's analogy or we say it's like the tunnels of rats because there's something analogous there.
But how how close is this analogy between the living entity and a pot?
They like the they like the picture that you break the pot and then everything is all the air is the same. Uh but the living being is not a pod and doesn't even share much in terms of the qualities of a a pot.
>> Yes.
This verse reminds us of something that happened a few days ago and someone was more or less preaching my philosophy and I was just to gain a a scope of how we should deal with these situations. Do you >> you should deal with these situations?
>> I just wanted to hear like how did praopad deal with myad philosophy?
I mean like when he met specifically people that were doing that and >> I it's a very broad question but >> how he dealt with it depended on who and when and what circumstances. It's not that he always dealt with it the same way, but he dealt with it by pointing out the defects of the Mayad philosophy basically and sometimes by really more than pointing it out just smashing it in.
How did praa deal with it?
Different different ways.
They in Boston one time praadud spoke at Marsh Chapel at Boston University.
The event was not well attended but one um scholarly person came and was asking about adita philosophy.
Who's talking?
>> All right. It's okay.
The That's why I propose that there should be then there'd be no conflict.
They so he was asking about a dwa philosophy and he spoke about the drop of water merging with the ocean of water similar kind of analogy and Shilapraad pointed out that the drop merges with the ocean but then gets evaporated again.
The water the drops of water in the ocean are evaporated.
So praadud said that so it's a temporary situation but praad said better to become like a fish in the ocean an aquatic in the ocean. The aquatics can play in the ocean and they can stay there.
So this is the vo philosophy not to merge and be evaporated but ashnut to enjoy in the ocean.
Another time I I've told this before that there was a a girl yoga society girl from uptown who was coming to 262nd Avenue.
Uh you know one of these nice yoga society girls and anything you say to these people. People used to come to 26 second avenue from these who were students of different yogis and for them everything was the same.
What your swami gi says is the same as what our swami gi says.
And even though their swami gi says that ultimately everything is impersonal, it's not different from what your swami is saying. And you know there there is no talking to these people because whatever you say, it's all the same anyway.
what I think and what you think, what you're saying and what I'm saying are really the same.
And so it's hard under those circumstances to have a discussion because we already agree on everything and it would be impossible for us not to be in absolute agreement uh because that would create duality and obviously duality is illusion.
So these people would come and you you could say anything to them and still it wouldn't budge them.
Anyway, this girl was coming. She was attending the lectures and then when Praet came she also continued to come.
She had an obvious interest and then after Praad's lecture she asked Praut a question. And it was like throwing a softball, you know, it was an easy question to answer or it was a question that would um highlight the u well you'll see from the question she said Swami G isn't it true that ultimately everything is one you know bringing things up to that very high platform form where everything is one and you can hear one reverberating in the ether.
And pra of course said no and he said just as as an example we have nine holes in the body but it doesn't mean that you can put the food here or here or here.
Brahbert said no you have to put the food in the the right hole in this in the in the mouth so that it will go to the stomach. not that everything is one and that was of part of a larger bashing as it were of uh everything being one.
So Praa dealt with it on that occasion that way.
Another occasion this was also Boston.
Praad spoke at I think it was Northwestern University big engagement very well attended big hall and outside the hall or in the foyer of the hall we'd set up books and uh you know various exhibits and prisadam and so on. So Praad spoke and then uh we were mostly manning the the tables in the in the in the foyer and I was at a book table or something and all of a sudden this wave went through the through the room. It was, you know, like where all of a sudden everybody's talking, everyone's buzzing. A big wave went through the through the room and I I didn't know what it was about, but I I just kept on with my service.
But later I found out what it was that Praopad as he was leaving the lecture hall was talking to one professor an Indian professor if I'm not wrong who was of that school of oneness and also of the school where we can't admit anything other than everything is one everything is one everything is one everything is one No amount of argument, no amount of reason will stick. It's like trying to nail jello- to the wall, you know, it just doesn't work.
So finally praa gave the example of a cotton ball. Do you know what a cotton ball is?
You know, but others may not know.
Cotton ball is the cotton in in the as it as it comes on the plant.
The place in which the cotton is kept by the plant that's called a cotton ball.
So uh what happened was that as praad was leaving the hall and essentially arguing with this professor finally praad took him by the shirt and said if everything is one then why don't you wear a cotton ball instead of a shirt.
That's how Praa dealt with it on on that occasion.
Of course, I don't have to talk about different occasions because everything is really one.
[laughter] Praad was quite pleased. One time in the around 1970 in in Boston, we used to go every day to the to Harvard Square if I remember and chanting Hari Krishna and distributing back to Godheads and so on.
And Girj had met one man who was on this everything is one jag.
And uh Gir challenged him that if everything is one then there's no difference between uh my money and your money so you can give me your wallet.
>> [laughter] >> And the man was so proud and so reluctant to lose the argument that he gave Gir his his wallet.
I if I recall he later had to come and ask for trade fair or ask for his wallet back or whatever it was. It didn't really it was philosophically cool but it didn't really work.
A similar example is there with Gurudas Pu who was in I forget if it was a jail or an asham probably an asham with some mayabbody and again the guy was arguing and so everything's one there's no difference if I have your chhatter or you have your cher and so you can give me your trotter, which the man did.
But later in the night, he was shivering and had to come and beg for his daughter.
Everything is one and yet everything is different. This is the sensible philosophy of Chaitan, the Maharra.
If everything is one, you can ask this question. Your guru is self-realized.
Oh yes.
And well, if we're all one, why aren't we all self-realized?
As soon as one person achieves self-realization, everyone should attain attain self-realization because there's no difference between me, you, and the next guy.
>> How does he see a difference?
>> If if he's truly self-realized, >> and how would he see a difference? How would he have a disciple to tell?
>> How would he have a disciple to tell everything? Yeah.
There's I've cited before there's one swami gi who used to sign his letters uh as praapad used to sign uh your every well-wisher he would sign your own true self [laughter] which comes to your point why send a >> [laughter] >> Punch.
Earlier in your presentation, you challenged that uh the Adveeta position that Supreme Brahman has come under somehow come somehow >> right come under Maya >> and that once the Maya is dispelled Kibalia.
[clears throat] So my uh recollection at least I don't speak to many such advantists that there is a response something like it is Leela that this is Leela that that the somehow is that it's Leela that somehow Brahman An for Leela comes under Maya. Is this Have you heard this? Is this >> Oh, yeah. It's all all Leela. You know, why are you kicking around like a dog?
Well, it's my Leela. [laughter] Did you ever read Kandid?
>> No. No. I've heard of it.
>> Paltter. He's there's a professor Plos says anything. He's and he's always his philosophy is that this is the best of all possible worlds and Valta skewers it he is uh anyway all goes through all of these uh the the main character goes through all these miseries and sufferings and so on and you know this is the best of all possible worlds. So the in this way they're also speaking that this is my leela.
You know when I punch you in the face it's just your Leela that you're you're going to suffer.
And people are going through the most abominable abominable kinds of suffering. They're in, you know, five car pileups where they get their their bodies dismembered and they're burned and scolded and so on. And that's just Leela.
the uh the Vietnam war was all vila and then all the other wars you know where the soldiers were subjected to the most and civilians to to the most miserable that's all leela >> and it just doesn't make it's absolutely doesn't make any sense at all >> leela means voluntary activities for enjoyment >> uh samiatay I I descend uh by my own energy by a tray of for my my own purposes. You You can't say that. But you you came to this world to to get kicked like an ass when you approach your girlfriend for sex.
Come on. Then but then the question comes from the other side that but we do accept as you were pointing out oneness and difference.
>> Yes. So for the Supreme Personality of Godhead to have such a energy that is susceptible to Maya.
That's also we could I I'm just kind of going down a little rabbit hole here I guess or whatever. [laughter] Couldn't we say that well that's Leela?
That's Bavan's Leela is to have an energy which is susceptible to Maya.
>> But ultimately that energy is is him.
>> Yes. Not exactly that it's his Leela that he Yes. You can say it's his his his activity and the said that he has multifarious energies but that doesn't compromise the perfection of Brahma.
So >> can I just >> like the sun it doesn't become it doesn't cool down because it [clears throat] it produces clouds. The cloud is the energy of the sun but the sun doesn't become cool because of the clouds.
It may be hidden from your vision because of the clouds but it doesn't become cloudy or clouded.
It always remains fully potent.
The personality of godhead is is like that. He can use he can manifest multifarious energies. That's part of his perfection.
He can manifest millions and billions of other living entities who are like himself but tiny.
That he can do. and who are independent as he is to a tiny extent.
But independence implies that they don't have to go along with it.
They can do what they want independently and suffering.
From another point of view that suffering is not substantial because the living entities are Brahma.
They are they have no association with material nature. So even though it appears that they're getting old, they're getting diseased, they're dying, they're going through this, they're going through that, actually has nothing to do with them.
But because they identify with the body therefore um so much trouble so much suffering like a child who's identifying with a dream body it's falling off a cliff so in the ultimate sense the living entity is not really suffering and therefore we agree with the mayabad philos when you identify yourself as Brahma Then all of this suffering disappears.
But you have to know which Brahma to identify with >> or how to identify as Brahma.
I'm an outlaw, I'm going to suffer.
But if I become one with the government, then I I won't suffer. I may turn states evidence. I may, you know, just at least be law-abiding, but that doesn't make me president of the United States or governor of New York.
>> That okay. one just >> to on this line yesterday uh you know anyway I read a recollection of I think it was Gargamuni >> from 26 second Avenue and I'm wondering maybe you also might have heard of this where he said that there was one lady was coming who was very attractive she was and I think he said she was a model or something but she was very attracted to Krishna Krishna's so beautiful and she met Sheila Praapad and asked him this question you know Krishna's so beautiful why he why is there so much ugliness in this world and pro according to Gargamuni and this is my question because I'd never heard this and it's interesting that Shilap's response was you you're attractive lady but you also have bowel movements you you p you have bowel movements I don't know how he put it you [laughter] know you pass right and you pass you something comes out of you that's not very attractive [laughter] that was all that Gamuni said >> I hadn't heard it before Good. Yeah.
>> And I found it very interesting. I mean to compare, you know, that this is this is the excrement of God.
But I didn't make any sense out of it either. So I just wondering if it's a real story or I I hadn't heard it before.
>> You hadn't heard it? Okay.
>> The garden was there, of course.
There is one that I can attest to um from Australia uh concerning Burjan Pu's wife who was an actress and therefore beautiful and probably was talking to her and Bjan I guess and talking about this this idea that the Mayavadis have that everything in this world is false and prophet said why false he said just like you're a beautiful girl why should I say no that's false no beautiful but uh that doesn't mean anyway I don't know what else prophet said about that but you you could you know put it in context they say that this world is false it's not false but it's not what we think it is we think that this world is for our enjoyment that's false but it doesn't mean that the the world is false and I see a beautiful woman I think she's meant for my enjoyment. That's false.
But it doesn't mean that the woman is false or that even that her beauty is false from one point of view.
But my idea that I'm meant to enjoy that that's false.
>> All right. Yes. Just another meaning.
>> Har Krishna.
>> Just another meaning of the uh the word kalia is uh like in kalabaki sadma is exclusive.
>> Yeah.
Yeah.
So there's cable there. Absolute dedicated mikum sha.
That's only only one person to we to whom we should surrender.
>> That's cable.
Yes.
Oh, we're not anti- oneness, but we're also not anti- diversity.
All right. Thank you Krishna for his two >> some of
