The Zamindari system was a colonial land policy introduced by the British East India Company in the 1700s, where powerful local intermediaries called Zamindars were appointed to collect taxes from farmers. In 1793, Lord Cornwallis formalized this through the Permanent Settlement Act in Bengal, granting Zamindars legal ownership of vast lands in exchange for fixed annual tax payments to the British. This system created a hierarchy where Zamindars extracted taxes from peasants while often not cultivating the land themselves, leading to exploitation of farmers who bore the burden of tax collection without receiving adequate rights or protections.

Who really owned the land? #land #landopedia #zamindari #realestateAñadido:
What was the Zamindari system? Let's rewind to the 1700s.
The British East India Company wanted just one thing, tax. So, they said, "We don't want to deal with thousands of farmers. Let's appoint powerful locals to collect [music] taxes for us." And thus, Zamindars were born, middlemen between the farmers and the crown. In 1793, Lord Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement Act in Bengal.
Zamindars were given legal ownership of vast lands, and they had to pay a fixed annual tax [music] to the British. If they paid, they could keep the rest. If not, land gone. So, what did they do?
Took tax from the peasants. Gave minimal rights to farmers, often didn't cultivate the land, but made the profits.
