Why You Should Balance Your Watch

[00:00:00]Okay, so today I want to share a tips and tricks video for you guys. Not sure if this is the correct way of doing it, but regardless, I figured this out the other day. It seems to work well for me, so hopefully it'll work for you as well.

[00:00:11]So, the problem is this. Does your watch tend to roll forward on your [music] wrist very often? As in, while you're wearing it, does it tend to sit on the outside part of your wrist often versus [music] sitting perfectly in the middle of your wrist? Well, if it tends to do this, if that's the case for you, well, it's actually a pretty common problem and it just basically means that your watch isn't balanced [music] from top to bottom. What do I mean by that? Well, we know that when we size our watch up, we're supposed to align the clasp [music] to the midline of the underside of our wrist like so. Well, that's correct, but what a lot of people fail to realize is that the clasp [music] isn't just this part right here, but it also includes the scissor mechanism on the inside as well. So, if we look at this Seiko right here, you can see that the clasp isn't just this length here, >> [music] >> but it's actually this length here going all the way up to the third link of this bracelet right here. So, it's actually this length. So, in order to test your watch and see whether or not it is balanced or not is very simple. I have a watch here that I've already fixed for this demonstration. All you have to do is just take your watch, face it up to the sky, and then I'm just going to move it this way just for the sake of the camera, but face it up to the sky, and then if your smiley inner scissor clasp area here is perfectly parallel with your watch like this, like so, it's perfectly parallel to each other. Well, if that's the case, then your watch is balanced. But, in the case of this Seiko right here, you can see that if I do this, you can see that the smiley face clasp area here in the bottom is actually doing a little smirk thing where it's kind of raising up on one side like this. And so, what tends to happen now is that after a little while, this smirk will tend to want to balance itself out on the underside of the wrist, which then pulls the watch forward, and you can see this part is going to start rolling forward on your wrist. So, how do we fix this? Well, it's actually very simple.

[00:02:03]All we need to do is just take more links from this part of your bracelet and move it to this part of your bracelet. So, we kind of know that already. We know that when we size our watch up and it's not like perfectly balanced, we're supposed to put more links on this side. But, in order to get the watch to be balanced top to bottom, we have to move quite a bit more links from this side over this side in order to get this to work. Like for example, in my scenario here, I have three and a half links on this side, but I have 1 2 3 4 5 6 and a half links on this side or in order to get this watch to be balanced. So, it's actually quite a bit more. And for small wrist folks like myself, this can be an issue because a lot of times for a lot of watches, we have to probably take out all of the links all of the possible links in order to get the watch to fit on our wrist.

[00:02:51]And there's already no more links that we can move around to to do this sort of balancing act, right? Like for example, on this on this Omega, these links can't be taken out anymore. I've already taken out most of the links. I only have a half link here that I can play around with, so there's really not much options I can do. But, for some rare occasions on some watches where they give you the luxury of being able to take out all of the links on the bracelet like this Orient Star or this Seiko [snorts] 5 here, I can take out all the links if I want to. Well, now we have the luxury to move things around and play around with it and make it balanced on our wrist.

[00:03:25]So, let's do that with this Seiko 5.

[00:03:28]Okay, so in order to get this to work, we just need a few tools. So, we just need a one of these little push pin things. We have a push pin on one side, and then we have a spring bar removal tool on the other side. We may or may not need this, but I just have it here just in case because this is a pretty common tool in terms of watch making. We need a way to push out some of the pins on these links. So, I have this tool right here where you can just basically uh unscrew this, and then you can set your uh bracelet in the middle here, and then push the pins out on this side. So, depends on your watch. Some watches uh require screws because they're screw links. Some are pin and collar like this Orient Star right here. And some just have a pin in there that kind of just friction fits in place like this uh Seiko 5 right here. So, something like this would be good. And finally, you need something like this. Uh this is another uh pretty common uh uh tool in a watch kit where you have this plastic base here, and you have a little hammer thing, and that just lets you hammer that pin back in after you are done with your resizing. So, let's take a look here. So, we have a watch here that is um slightly off balance as in like there is Actually, maybe I should take this watch off in order to see this properly.

[00:04:37]Um I'll probably take maybe two links off of this side and move it to this side. Uh let's see.

[00:04:46]Or maybe one link should be good. I'll move one link off this side and move it over to this side in order to get this watch to be pretty balanced. I believe it should be okay. Let me just unbuckle this this clasp first. So, that's what we need this tool for. So, there's a pin on this side. We're just going to take the pin off one of these clasp.

[00:05:08]And so, there you go.

[00:05:11]And then sometimes I like to set it on something like this just to make it a little bit easier to work with. So, to look on the other side of your watch, you can see that there is a lot of times an arrow that's pointing to a certain direction on some of these links. This one, the arrow is going this way.

[00:05:28]On this side, it's going this way.

[00:05:30]And on this side, it's going this way.

[00:05:33]So, that means that we have to push the pin from this way outwards.

[00:05:38]And then uh on this side, we push it this way in order to get the links to come out. So, let's do that. So, let me see. We're going to take one more off of here. So, because we can actually take out all of the links on these bracelets, we have to be a little bit careful, right? Because there is actually a taper on some of these bracelets. Uh depending on your bracelet, you may not have a taper, but um some of the bracelets pretty commonly have a taper to them.

[00:06:03]So, you can see that there's a few links here that taper down, and then at some point it will just end up being straight.

[00:06:10]So, we don't want to take the links that are tapering because otherwise they'll kind of mess up the whole form of this bracelet. So, we just want to take out the straight ones. So, these two are straight right here. These four are tapered.

[00:06:23]You can see it's it's very subtle. Some watches are more obvious, but it's very subtle on the Seiko like this. Orient Star is also pretty subtle, but you can kind of see that these two links right here are tapered, and then these ones are straight.

[00:06:39]So, just make sure you move the straight ones and not the tapered ones. So, um I'm going to move uh this link here off.

[00:06:48]So, let's do that. So, when you do this, you have to rotate the base here so it kind of raises up a little bit so you can get the pin to align perfectly with the height of your of your bracelets.

[00:07:00]Like so.

[00:07:02]Um but we can also do something like this where we take a piece of tape or something and just put it underneath here so we don't scratch up the watch. That would be preferred. I know for this one that I'm pushing out right now there is no arrow because uh even though all the links here can be removed, I don't think they're intending you to take out this link here, but I'm going to do it anyways.

[00:07:26]So, I'm going to push this link out this side.

[00:07:30]Okay, there we go.

[00:07:32]That link is out.

[00:07:34]I need to fix this tape.

[00:07:36]So, I'm going to pull this link out.

[00:07:39]And then in order to do this, we got to take out the other link as well because a link is attached from two ends. So, we're going to put the little pin on this side and then do the same thing. Push this link out.

[00:07:53]And then now the link is removed. There you go.

[00:07:59]Easy peasy.

[00:08:01]Put this aside for now.

[00:08:03]And we're going to open up the other side so we have a space to put that link in. So, same thing. Spin the watch around.

[00:08:11]Put it onto the little the little contraption here. Just going to take the pin and align it.

[00:08:19]Now, we're going to put the the new link back to this side.

[00:08:22]And because we've pushed the the pin out this way, we have to hammer back in this way. So, just make sure you're putting it in the right way.

[00:08:32]So, we're going to do this.

[00:08:35]And then we're going to set this into our little base here.

[00:08:41]And we're just going to take our hammer, use the uh the plastic side so we don't scratch anything and then we're just going to hammer that pin back down.

[00:08:50]Now, right now it is it's flush with the um with the side of the bracelet. I'm just going to put this back into the into this little contraption here and just gently push that pin in just a little bit more just so it's not flush but it's also just a little bit further into the bracelet.

[00:09:13]And we don't have to do this but I I just kind of like it to be a little bit further in.

[00:09:20]Okay, perfect.

[00:09:22]Oh, we're going to take this. We're going to put it over here.

[00:09:26]On this side.

[00:09:29]Pin back in and rinse and repeat.

[00:09:33]There you go. Now, we've uh reattached all the pins. All we have to do now is just reconnect the the clasp back together.

[00:09:43]So, we put the um the little spring bar back in here. There we go.

[00:09:47]So, now let's try it out. So, if we close up this clasp, and hold it upright like so, and then we're going to just reorient this to the camera. You can see that this is much more balanced. So, the top of the watch and this smiley clasp on the bottom is pretty Oh, pretty parallel to each other.

[00:10:10]So, now when we put it on the wrist, there's less likely of a chance of it rolling off to the side here because the clasp is already centered to the bottom of our wrist. So, there's a less likely chance of it rolling over.

[00:10:26]Um and so, yeah, hopefully that uh helps you out. I mean, it's a small change.

[00:10:30]It's not a significant change. Is it a lifesaver? Definitely not, but I always found it annoying that the watch sits on the outside of the wrist.
