The heat is on for Memorial Day weekend but temps cool quickly after that

[00:00:02]Well, we are going on nearly a month with no measurable rainfall here in southern Idaho. So, a likely come as no surprise as we look at current drought conditions that we are seeing some spots in severe to exceptional drought. The dark maroon color you see here over almost all of Owyhee County stretching into portions of Twin Falls County as well. That is exceptional drought. That is considered kind of the worst level of drought that you can be at as you look across the rest of southern Idaho.

[00:00:29]Orange is severe drought. Most of the Treasure Valley right now is just considered abnormally dry, but still lack of rainfall and of course the warm conditions that we've had most of May has been well above average is leading to extreme fire conditions as well. We are really worried about how dry it is out there. We're already hearing about some fires that have sparked just in the last couple of days. One burning right now not far from Garden Valley. So, that's what we're talking about and thinking about as we head into this Memorial Day weekend. I hope it's on your mind as well that you'll be extra cautious with anything out there that can throw a spark especially because as we look what's coming our way over the next several days heat will continue to build. We stay dry and sunny through Monday. Things will continue to dry out and then we have a system coming in next Tuesday a first alert weather day that will plummet our temperatures but will also bring gusty winds back into the picture and that combined with very little rainfall from that system will continue to exacerbate those very high fire fire conditions across the region. Now, looking outside today is really lovely 74 in Boise right now 64 in Sun Valley.

[00:01:34]It doesn't look quite as pretty as yesterday. We have some clouds that are moving through associated with a very weak cold front that's going to just kind of skirt by most of our viewing area. You can see unsettled weather over Montana. That's the core of this system, but because of the cold front dropping its way through tonight that will lead to some breezy winds tomorrow. So, northwest winds maybe 20 to 30 miles per hour across most of the Treasure Valley.

[00:01:58]Little windier east of Boise out into the Magic Valley, but besides the wind, a really gorgeous Thursday coming our way. Abundant sunshine overhead and temperatures right about where they should be for this point in May. So, waking up tomorrow, clear skies, likely very light winds early on. I see that greater uptick in those wind speeds later in the afternoon.

[00:02:17]Morning lows around 50 for most of the Treasure Valley, mid-40s in the Magic Valley tomorrow, mid-20s for Stanley, mid-30s in McCall early on, but look at this gorgeous day. Abundant sunshine, yes, a little windy, especially in the Magic Valley, but still highs around 70 for Twin Falls. We'll hit 75 in Boise, beautiful 77 for Caldwell, Nampa, and Mountain Home, and into the 60s up in the mountains. And after that, we continue to warm. Temperatures will really skyrocket on Saturday, but Friday looking gorgeous up around 80° in the Boise area. Then we jump to near 90 Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Memorial Day. Really warm for those backyard barbecues, but if you can find a shaded spot, really beautiful for outdoor activities. Then on Tuesday, there's that First Alert Weather Day for that strong system that plummets our temperatures by nearly 20° and brings some strong winds back into the picture, as well.
