Just two days after Booneville, the war turned brutal in central Missouri. On June 19th, 1861, Union Home Guard units gathered near Cole Camp, many of them German American volunteers defending their community.
Before dawn, pro-S forces launched a surprise night attack, hitting the camp while many defenders were unprepared. In the darkness, the fight collapsed into chaos, close-range volleys, scattered lines, and desperate retreats. By morning, the home guards were crushed, suffering heavy losses in one of the war's earliest shocks in Missouri. The Battle of Cole Camp proved Missouri's conflict would be personal, local, and violent, fought not only by armies, but by neighbors.
