They pack their duffel bags, board commercial airliners, and fly 20 hours across the Pacific. When the doors of those airplanes open at Tan Sonut Air Base in Saigon, the reality of Vietnam hits them like a physical blow. The heat is an oppressive living thing. The humidity is suffocating, smelling of diesel fuel, rotting vegetation, and burning waste.

Down there, the dark is filled with booby traps, venomous snakes deliberately tied to bamboo roots, and waiting enemy soldiers. Above ground, the American infantry man, the grunt, is carrying 60 lb of gear through elephant grass that cuts like a razor. They march for days in monsoon rains, their feet rotting in their boots, fighting leeches, heat stroke, and a paralyzing paranoia. Every step could trigger a bouncing Betty landmine. Every bamboo thicket could hide a sniper. The mental toll is catastrophic. You are fighting a war where the farmer selling you Coca-Cola by day might be the gorilla shooting at you by night. They even breached the walls of the impenetrable US embassy in Saigon. Militarily, the Tet offensive is a massive defeat for the North. The American and South Vietnamese forces rally, repelling the attacks and decimating the ranks of the Vietkong.

[00:09:26]But psychologically, it is a fatal blow to the American war effort. The television footage of chaotic street fighting in Saigon shocks the American public. How could an enemy purportedly on the verge of total collapse mount such a massive synchronized assault? The credibility gap between what the government is telling the people and what the people are seeing on their televisions shatters completely. When Walter Konite, the most trusted man in America, returns from a fact-finding mission to Vietnam. He looks into the camera and tells the nation that the conflict is mired in a bloody stalemate.

[00:10:09]President Johnson reportedly turns to his aids and says, "If I've lost Konite, I've lost middle America. The streets of American cities erupt." The anti-war movement, once confined to radical student groups and pacifists, swells into a mainstream tidal wave. Protests paralyze university campuses. Draft cards are burned in open defiance. The nation is ripping itself apart at the seams. Richard Nixon enters the Oval Office in 1969 with a promise to achieve peace with honor. His strategy is Vietnamization, slowly pulling American troops out while shifting the burden of combat onto the South Vietnamese army. But while Nixon is withdrawing troops from the public eye, he is secretly expanding the war in the shadows. Without the knowledge of Congress or the American people, Nixon orders a massive illegal bombing campaign against North Vietnamese sanctuaries in neutral Cambodia. When the secret inevitably leaks, the domestic outrage is apocalyptic.

[00:11:20]It culminates in May 1970 when Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on unarmed student protesters at Kent State University, killing four. The war has officially come home. The morale of the remaining troops in Vietnam.

But the story doesn't end with the stroke of a pen. Without the umbrella of American air power, South Vietnam is doomed. In April 1975, the North Vietnamese Army launches a massive final offensive. They roll towards Saigon with unstoppable momentum. The images from the final days are seared into the global consciousness.
