Today we're talking about garlic vine, Mansoa alliacea, or garlic vine, is a species of tropical liana in the family Bignoniaceae. It is native to northern South America and has spread to Central America and Brazil. The plant can be described as a shrub or a liana since it produces numerous woody shoots from the root and reaches a height of 2 to 3 m.
The stems are almost bare and slightly scaly. The short stalk leaves are opposite and trifoliate. The petiole is up to 3 cm long. The slightly leathery, short stalked, X-shaped to elliptical leaflets are almost glabrous, slightly scaly, entire and rounded, pointed to pointed with a pointed, rarely rounded to truncated base. The middle leaflet is often replaced by a long, usually three-part, often falling tendril. The slightly glandular leaflets are 10 to 27 cm long. The leaflet stalks are up to 3 cm long. The pseudo stipules are inconspicuous. Axillary, few-flowered and thyroid-shaped inflorescences are formed. The large, slightly fragrant, hermaphrodite and stopped, funnel-shaped flowers with double perianth are violet to purple-white. The small, about 1 cm long, cup-shaped and slightly glandular calyx is slightly toothed, almost truncated. The corolla is up to 9 cm long and the bare corolla tube up to 7 cm. The corolla lobes are up to 2 cm long. The four enclosed stamens are didynamous. The two-chambered and scaly elongated ovary is superior. The style with two-lobed stigma is enclosed. There is a discus. The plant flowers abundantly twice a year in autumn to winter and in spring, though it may also have some flowers sporadically throughout the year. The fruit is ribbed, angular, pointed, almost bare, multi-seeded capsules with a persistent calyx up to 40 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide. The seeds are winged on both sides and are up to 5 to 6 cm long with the wings. The wings can also be reduced. It is native to tropical South America, where it can be found growing wild in the tropical rainforests of Brazil including the Amazon forest, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and also in Costa Rica. Mansoa has been exported overseas and grows in the favorable climates of for example Puerto Rico, Southern Africa, Thailand, and India. It is cultivated in the West Indies among the mestizos of the Amazon rainforest it is known as ayawasha, a Spanish Quechua name that means forest garlic or wild garlic. It is a plant remedy in the Amazon for pain and inflammation from arthritis and rheumatism as well as colds, flu, fever, diarrhea, and skin ulcers. The bark is used in ayahuasca preparations. Some capsule and leaf products are sold in stores in Brazil and Peru and can be found as an ingredient in several other multi-herb formulas for cold, flu, and pain. In some chronic disorders as in arthritis, the inflammatory pain persists beyond the inflammation control becoming pathological, its treatment shows limited efficacy and adverse effects which compromises patients quality of life. Mansoa alliacea, known as cipó-alhoe, is popularly used as analgesic and others species of this genus show anti-inflammatory actions. We investigated the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive potential of M.
alliacea extract in an inflammatory pain model, which presents inflammatory characteristics similar to those caused by arthritis through of the intraplantar injection of complete Freund's adjuvant CFA in mice. The extract chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of rocoumeric, ferulic, and chlorogenic acids, luteolin, and apigenin. The treatment with M. alliacea prevented and reversed the CFA-induced mechanical allodynia with maximum inhibition IMAX of 100% and 90 plus or minus 20% respectively. The co-administration of M. alliacea extract plus morphine enhanced the anti-allodynic effect with IMAX of 100%.
The M. alliacea extract also reverted the CFA-induced thermal hyperalgesia with IMAX of 3.6 times greater compared to the vehicle and reduced the thermal threshold under physiological conditions. However, M. alliacea extract did not reduce the CFA-induced edema and myeloperoxidase activity.
Additionally, non-selective and delta-selective opioid receptor antagonists, but not kappa opioid, prevented extract anti-allodynic effect with IMAX of 98 plus or minus 2% and 93% or minus 2% respectively. Moreover, an Alliacea extract did not induce adverse effects commonly caused by opioids and other analgesic drugs, at least in the tested pharmacological doses after the acute treatment. M. Alliacea extract presents antinociceptive activity in an inflammatory pain model, which presents inflammatory characteristics similar to those arthritis induced without causing adverse effects in tested pharmacological doses. These effects seem to be mediated mainly via delta opioid receptors. Mansoa Alliacea is a classic edible warm climate cottage garden plant. In Vietnam, the paddy fields are filling with rain in the wet season when this flowers. Leaves and tender shoot tips are used in dishes for their garlic flavor and and aroma. When the leaves or stems are crushed, they emit a strong pungent aroma very similar to garlic. Because of this, the leaves and entire plant are completely edible and can be used as a convenient spice or substitute for regular garlic in your everyday cooking. The leaves are often brewed into tea to help relieve symptoms of colds, flu, pneumonia, and other upper respiratory tract infections. It is widely used in traditional practices to help manage body aches, muscle pain, arthritis, and rheumatism. Scientific studies suggest that the plant contains sulfur compounds like allyl sulfides and lapachone, which are known to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and blood cholesterol lowering properties. The strong garlic-like odor is a natural deterrent for certain insects. The crushed leaves can be rubbed on the skin or the dried, burned leaves used to effectively repel mosquitoes and other pests in your vicinity. Beyond its practical uses, it is a magnificent ornamental creeper that produces large, showy clusters of flowers that transition from deep purple to lavender and pale white over time. It is highly beneficial for the garden ecosystem because it adds vertical, lush coverage to walls and trellises while actively attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
