In October 1969, the North Vietnamese Army surrounded Firebase Kate with 4,000-6,000 soldiers against 27 Americans and 150 Montagnard tribesmen, a 40:1 disadvantage. However, this was the NVA's worst tactical decision because they concentrated three full regiments around a single hilltop, creating the densest target for American air power since Khe San. Over five days, continuous air strikes from F-4 Phantoms, F-100 Super Sabres, A-1 Skyraiders, and B-52 bombers killed hundreds of NVA soldiers, destroying the attacking regiments so severely that the NVA had to bring in replacement units. The bait strategy worked perfectly: the NVA captured an empty hill they had themselves destroyed, while nearly all defenders survived.
