Anti-FGM board steps up campaign against rising cases

[00:00:01]Now in a renewed effort to curb the growing cases of female genital mutilation, the National AntiFGM board has embarked on a sensitization program across the country. The board held a day capacity building train in training I should say in Iolo aimed at empowering and equipping several stakeholders involved in the fight against the practice. Isolo has a prevalence rate of 66% compared to the national average of 15%. Stakeholders committed to bringing down the FGM cases in the county to at least 40% by next year.

[00:00:39]So we need customized policies and uh and and programs to fight FGM and that's why we have this committee in place. So today we had the privilege of meeting and strategizing on how we are going to reduce FGM in Iselo County and we are very hopeful that partners and stakeholders are in this together with the board so that the community is involved in the fight against FGM. This is actually happening in all the hotspot counties. Last week we river I am the champion. I'm a survivor myself and I'm championing FGM. Two of my siblings girls 13 years old and 9 years old have not been cut. I can say as a champion this is my achievement throughout the championing of this anti FGM campaign. So if we take responsibility ourselves we will start with our own family with our neighbors by the end of maybe our next year statistic if it comes we will reduce from that 66% at least even to 40%. We as religious leaders have been able to speak out in the mosque. We have been able to speak out in churches. And these strategies will continue until we ensure that we have broken the backbone of FGM. And I am very grateful to the FGM Board who was able to come here as a sponsor. It also motivates us and if we continue like this with this strength we will be able to overcome this female genital mutilation which is a very serious injustice.
