Acting Attorney General defends Trump's compensation fund

[00:00:00]People that hurt police get money all the time.

[00:00:03]>> A lot of people are talking right now about this new $1.8 billion fund that the Justice Department has established for anyone who feels that the justice system was weaponized against them.

[00:00:14]That's a lot of money, but they haven't put forth that many details. So, I sat down with the acting attorney general, Todd Blanche, and asked him a lot of questions, including whether anyone convicted of assaulting a law enforcement official could get some of this taxpayer money.

[00:00:27]>> You're the nation's top law enforcement official right now. Would you be okay with people who were convicted of hurting police getting taxpayer money?

[00:00:36]>> Just to be clear, people that hurt police get money all the time, okay?

[00:00:41]There's a process where where if you are if you are if you believe you have your rights violated, um you can you can apply for funds, you can sue, you can file a claim, you can go to court. In some of those cases, the state, the government, the federal government settles those cases. It's abhorrent to ever ever touch a law enforcement officer, which is why anytime anybody does that and it's a federal officer, we'll prosecute them. But, that's a completely different question with whether an individual is allowed to apply for a claim. Whether they'll get a claim who depend depends. I I can't It's not It would not be appropriate for me to to to talk about absolutes, like absolutely not under no circumstance. I mean, we can talk about hypotheticals till we're blue in the face, but but um but that really wouldn't be fruitful.

[00:01:25]>> The Justice Department has about 30 days to select the members of this panel who will start in vetting these claims. And it's important to note in the settlement, the president can fire any of the members if he doesn't like the decisions they're making.
