Long-distance hiking requires careful planning and adaptation to environmental conditions, such as adjusting daily mileage based on weather and terrain. On hot, humid days, hikers may need to reduce their distance (from 22 miles to 11 miles) to maintain safety and energy levels. Proper hydration is critical, especially when water sources are scarce, and hikers must carry sufficient water or locate reliable water sources along their route.

Day 62 on the AT - Sizzling kind of dayAjouté :
Good morning from day 62.
Well, we only have I think 11 miles to go today.
And uh slack packing again.
Well, I'm no packing traveler slack packing.
But he's carrying with 50 lbs of water.
>> A ton of water cuz Oh, sorry.
This section we found out there's nothing for 9 miles. And if we're only doing 11, then it's not good. So, I had to go use the privy first thing this morning and there was a spring flow, but it was at a pond. It was nasty.
So, we got it just in case. It's It's disgusting.
But we'll see. If we need it, we need it.
And all we've been doing is going straight up this morning.
I think they said it's like a mile or two straight up. Two.
And uh Oh, over two, yeah.
So, yeah.
And it's a late start as usual cuz sometimes when we're in hostels, um and when they make breakfast, they can't get out as early as we want.
So, we didn't get on trail till 8:00, which is not really good.
Sun comes up before 6:00.
And today's supposed to be a high of 98 and humid.
So, yeah, not good.
Yeah, it's awful.
If I die, I love all you back home.
>> [laughter] >> Uh And of course Traveler being stubborn won't let me carry the pack.
But yeah.
But I love them.
All right. So, we'll show you a little bit more later on trail.
Like I said, these first couple miles we're going straight up.
That's why I'm breathing heavy. So, we'll see you further up.
Look at all Look at all the mountain laurels.
They're blooming.
Look at that. They're so pretty.
All around. Look.
That's beautiful.
That's my handsome. He's tired.
Ah, we came up to the top.
This is what we're seeing.
That's the town.
It's very very hazy due to humidity.
And got steps up here.
I don't know what they're for.
Not sure.
And here's the view this way.
Pretty freaking cool.
There's something else over here.
I guess there's a story behind a little boy who was found This was long ago.
I don't know where it's at.
He said there's a memorial somewhere.
But long time ago he was found up here, like in 1800s or something.
If I find the story about it, I'll let you guys know.
>> I wish there was a zip line.
Me, too.
I would zip line all the way.
You want to watch me navigate this?
Yeah. That way if you fall, it's on camera.
Well, we can send it in and probably make money. Oh, is that what it is?
Yeah.
They've got big steps. I don't like them.
I'll drop my poles.
>> So, a combination of trail days and this heat and different speeds of hikers, we're on a different bubble of folks.
And you know I like trail names, so I'm going to give you some trail names that have been around us a little bit.
Uh Newfie, Flat Tire, Bulldozer, >> [laughter] >> and Mile Marker.
They're just some of the ones that we've been kind of hanging around a little bit uh last few days.
Uh also, I don't know if I mentioned Gasket and Summit. I think I did.
But yeah, just a couple different names that are that are coming around us now. Remember Discount.
Oh, and Discount, yep.
Saw Discount yesterday.
So, yeah, seeing a bunch of new folks.
It's kind of neat.
Um but yeah, today we're trying to beat the heat. Uh I think we told you we're doing 11 miles today cuz that 22 that we had planned is just not on the table. There's no chance.
Yesterday's 18.7 about killed us.
So, we're going to try to beat the heat.
We should be We're going to walk in it obviously. We're in it, but it'll be a shorter day for us. And we got water coming up in less than 2 miles, which is very exciting. All right, well, we'll uh we'll show you what's up down here. There's not There was nothing to see today really. Uh I think Sunflower showed you with that one or two views that we had.
That's about it.
But we're we'll get We'll get down here and we'll show you getting some water or something. I'm going to chug it, so maybe we'll have a chugging contest.
So, we were reading the comments on one of our videos and one of my old military buddies reached out, Seamus. So, What up, bud?
Yeah, he reached out, uh offered some help, and we appreciate it. Uh we'll let you know, Seamus, if we need anything. Um but it got me to thinking, like him and I met in Korea. We were at two different bases. You know, we only got to see each other like every other weekend or something for, you know, like a few little get-togethers, but uh anyway, we were stationed together right after that in Guam and uh man, what a good time we had there.
Actually, you want to talk about a dream team?
We had a little uh little three-man shop over there in the lab, and it was uh myself, him, and Q.
That was a dream team right there. Holy smokes.
I couldn't ask for a better group. That was awesome.
Um but yeah, man, just thinking of Guam.
God, do we miss that place.
The food, the people, like it doesn't I don't think it gets better, you know? A lot of people don't even know what the hell Guam is. I mean, including myself, you know, when I was um getting orders there, uh I was asked, "Hey, you want to go to Guam?" I'm like, "I don't know what the hell Guam is."
But holy crap, the the people, the culture, the food.
I want to go back so bad. We were there 3 years. I think the temperature never fluctuated 10°.
It was It was always in like the the low 80s. Real humid, but doesn't matter cuz you have the ocean breeze. Oh, man.
The food was awesome. I can't stop thinking about the food there, either.
Every time we'd go to like a a get-together with some locals, they would all bring a bunch of food, and then they they would not let you go home without taking some with you.
I think they called it balutan to take food home.
Oh, man, it was good.
Oh, man, I miss that place.
But you can't go there as a civilian now. It's just too damn expensive. You know, in the military you live on base and you can you can make do over there.
And you live pretty well, but as a civilian, there's no way. You'd have to make a killing just to be able to afford to live there.
So, you know, the I don't know. I I would I would love to go back.
Uh spend another few years there if I could.
And I know for sure Sunflower wants to go back.
I mean, heck, they thought she was a local.
We first show up there and I ask her to start making finadene, which is a local dish. He's like, "I don't know what that is." [laughter] Remember that, babe? Yeah.
Yeah, so yeah, it'd be awesome to get back there, but probably never happen.
That's all right. Yeah, speaking of Guam, I don't know if you're listening out here, Barry.
John, but uh it's good seeing you when I was back in Arizona this year, man.
All right, we'll talk to y'all later.
So, Traveler talking about Guam, it has me thinking of all the times that when we were there was so much fun.
And uh when I first started work there, um I was actually a civilian working on the base and it was so much fun. And then going in there, all of the locals thought I was a local and were helping me out and doing all that stuff until they found out that I wasn't. But they still helped me out and still took care of us and it was just awesome. Oh, they were.
And then um I went on a TDY to Japan for a couple weeks and it was so weird being there.
People were talking in Japanese to me thinking I was a local.
Well, no, sorry.
And uh yeah, um You blend in everywhere you go. Yeah, and then we uh when I was younger going to Mexico with my parents all the time, so many people start talking Spanish to me.
And me, I am Mexican and um Spanish and Native, but I grew up speaking Spanish, but then lost it cuz I stopped using it.
Um and then yeah, only got a few I can only speak a few words and sentences. Woo!
You good? Oh yeah.
>> Here and there, but uh yeah, it seems like anywhere I was going I was fitting in, so it was kind of crazy.
What? It was pretty neat, but we did have fun in in Guam and everything else and I really uh got a taste of the military life that we lived there.
So, it was pretty cool.
Um yeah.
Uh that was to add on to the Guam story there.
We've got about a little over a mile.
This is our view there, there's a little waterfall. Oops.
I'll go up this way.
Yeah.
And sorry, trying to figure out where we're going. There's two trails.
One went right by the water, along the water, and this one's going up. Yeah, if it goes up, it's probably the AT. Yeah, AT is always harder, so it's never easy to go right along the trail or right along the water. Oh, there's a huge camp spot down there.
Nice and flat, too.
Yeah, it's Yeah, getting close to the end.
We filled up our water, chugged it a lot, refilled again.
Cuz again, it is a very hot day out here.
But, today's been good for me.
Very happy.
And while we're at the water source, I dunked my buff in, so it'll keep me nice and cool while we're out here.
And it is so far. It's really nice.
Whoo.
Almost tripped and fell trying to look at the camera.
Um yeah, um I did take a muscle relaxer last night to help with my hip, and that's helped tremendously. My hip doesn't really hurt.
>> it on the way.
>> [laughter] >> He doesn't want me to be better. He wants to get off and go home.
No, I'm here for you.
Oh.
But, yeah, so today's been a really good day for me. I'm having fun today.
Um even though it's hot, I'm enjoying it all.
Um maybe cuz it's >> It's nice walking around without a pack on.
Hey, I had it for a while. I did take the pack for a while just to give him a break.
>> of a mile, so thank you. Well, he didn't want to give it back.
So, it's his fault.
Um but yeah, good day.
I'm feeling better.
And I know there's always days where you're going to feel blue.
Hey, you're feeling better and and we're going to get a sub. Yes.
>> So, it's going to get even better. Yeah, so maybe we'll take a picture, if we remember, of our sub of what we ate. And then we're going to Scaddos for dinner.
We'll let you know how that is, too.
So.
>> hammering north tomorrow morning. Yeah.
It'll be good.
Actually, tomorrow's another relatively short day. Yeah, but we'll have >> 13 We'll have our full packs and it's supposed to be a lot cooler, I think 70s, I believe. 76, I don't know. I have to look again, but way better than today.
So, all right. We'll show you more later on.
Check it out. My handsome man. I'm making him stay there.
I'm talking to the video.
No, you don't need to hear me.
It's cool bridge.
Yeah.
View over here. It's so pretty.
I like it. I can hear the road. We're close.
Yeah.
Oh, nice.
Oh, that's okay.
We're going to go over towards the water and get in cuz we still have a while till we're picked up.
So, if we show you we'll show you. If not well, we don't.
Oh, yeah. Good. Half hour, we're going to go relax in the water and enjoy it for a bit cuz it's hot as hell.
It's like Arizona hot.
But worse.
No. This is humid and gross. Arizona's Yeah, Arizona's definitely We're here at the end. Yes.
All right, now to go get cool down in the water.
We'll catch you in just a bit. Say bye.
Bye.
Here's the bridge.
No.
No service. Well, I get one bar. Oh, you do have a bar? I had nothing. Mine says SOS.
