Garden Tour Part 2 | David Austin & Unusual varietiesAdded:
Morning garden lovers. Welcome to part two of my garden tour.
And as you can see, I do like to color coordinate my rose borders.
And I shall show you something that is blooming very lovely today.
And she is a new newly blooms. I think she blooms yesterday.
This is the lovely Lady Emma Hamilton.
Really, really gorgeous there. Got two blooms of Lady Emma Hamilton and lots and lots more buds to come.
And although Lady Emma Hamilton do look similar in bloom to Lady of Shalott over here.
Oh, the wind's picking up a little. Do look similar to Lady of Shalott. This Lady of Shalott's quite old, so she's actually faded a little. She should be quite peach-like and she's gone a little bit pink.
And let me just grab that bloom over there. Let me just grab that bloom over there. Oh.
Ah, there we go. That is the color of Lady of Shalott.
And um there's comes the bud.
So, she does fade.
These blooms are about 4 days old now.
Um I think there is another new bloom here.
Wind's really picking up. That is Lady of Shalott as well.
So, looking very much forward to Lady Emma Hamilton blooming. So, that is quite a new rose.
Just bloomed yesterday.
We have the Meteor, which is yet to bloom.
Now, not much blooming over here. Maybe because maybe because it's not even like a direct sun because you can see the apple tree is kind of like giving a little bit more shade.
That might be a factor because it's not in full sun. Over here it's in full sun. You see, over here there's nothing blocking day all day sun. This is all day sun here.
Whereas at the back over here is a little bit shaded by the tree.
So, possibly that is later to be in flower. It does make a difference.
Um let me see what I can tell you here.
I've shown you before.
This is Natalia.
This is Natalia.
Really lovely rose.
Nice Nice uh flower formation, good fragrance, healthy rose.
Another healthy rose here is Sweet Honey.
Sweet Honey do open quite a open open shape.
It's good for pollinators.
And that it looks like a unusual version of um Golden Celebration.
That's a very old bloom there.
I've said before I have thought about getting rid of uh Golden Celebration cuz I really didn't like the heavy flowers.
But yet this year she's done okay for me. Let's have a look at that cane there.
So, that's Golden Celebration. Um over there there's one as well.
And this one is Crown Princess Margarita.
Planted only bare root um a few a couple of months ago.
And we have a bloom of um Martha Stewart.
Um this is uh Sweet Romantica.
This is Martha Stewart.
And over here, wow, look at that. That is crazy. This is probably one of my best performing David Austins.
I think it's also one of my favorites as well.
Maybe I have to do a chart of which one is my favorite because I can't decide.
That'd be really quite difficult. I'd be take me days and weeks to think about which one would be my favorite.
So, this is uh Bring Me Sunshine.
Super healthy rose.
It's just loaded with blooms. Even though it's quite a tall rose and quite sturdy stems.
The blooms just weigh them just weigh the whole cane down.
Look at that. I cannot even get all of that. That That is all That is all of um Bring Me Sunshine there.
It's about 3 ft tall and 5 ft wide.
Yeah. Wow. That is one big rose.
On to another one of my favorite roses.
Well, for scent anyway.
This is the less vigorous Boscobel. I do love the rich coral coloring when it first opens. These are a little bit faded now.
Um but this one does have quite good sun as well. Maybe maybe if you plant it in semi-shade, the the color might be more vibrant.
But the the uh the fragrance on this is so intense. Very fruity tropical fruit scent.
And that's a new cane I have. Really super excited.
And oh, another favorite.
How many favorites do I have?
This is Princess Charlene de Monaco.
Look at that. Oh my goodness. How can you not fall in love with this?
I think this one has to be my favorite, right? The top top favorite. Number one favorite.
Look at that. Oh my word.
Another bouquet.
Another bouquet of roses from one It's not even a main cane. It's a side cane. I trimmed off the main cane a while ago. Look at that.
That's a side pain.
Amazing.
Just uh the whole package of a rose, stunning.
Stunning, stunning. That is beautiful.
So, Princess Charlene de Monaco.
Okay, let's have a look at this back wall here.
This one is a compact rose, quite famous.
And perfect if you haven't got very much space or you've only got a balcony or something like that. Perfect for a pot. This is Garden of Roses.
Schwarze Liebe is this is the other name.
Let me test if that's fragrance. I've forgotten.
Uh very, very slight.
You could call it No, no. I don't think that I would call that fragrance. So, that is uh Garden of Roses, very long-lasting uh blooms, healthy rose.
Perfect for small spaces.
And on to one here. This is uh Golden Gate.
Not too keen on the uh the loose petals.
But uh it does cover this ugly ugly fence, so.
Anyway, I think it's better looking at the blooms than the fence, right?
We have here one Cour d'Amour de Chantilly.
Uh I'll have to write that down cuz I'm not sure whether I said it right.
So, only bare root from Town Centre and lots um just this year, I think. Just um Well, not this year.
Uh I think in November.
Really, really big packed with petal blooms. And I'll give this a a sniff cuz this only just opened um it's opened.
Wow, really, really good fragrance.
Um can't really describe it. It I could only It's quite uh rose-like with a hint of maybe honey.
Um very very nice fragrance though, quite deep.
Intense fragrance. I would say this fragrance is an eight.
Love the bloom, quite very compact with petal.
And the leaf is very very healthy. So, that is Domaine de Chantilly.
And here we have a very sad-looking um spicy Parfuma. Like I said, I need to do a Parfuma video in the next week or so, I think. And I shall tell you what I think of her.
This one is another Bring Me Sunshine because I love it so much I bought two.
And sometimes when you see two full-grown plants in my garden, I actually paid good money to buy two full-grown plants, not just cuttings.
It does mean I do love the rose very much.
This is Bring Me Sunshine. You see the yellow tones are much more vibrant than the one I showed you. But it's less vigorous because it is covered by the apple tree, just underneath canopy.
It gets about three or four hours sun a day, but not as much as the other one. So, the color is much more yellow and vibrant.
Uh oh, I just missed Grace there. Now, Grace is a cutting.
Grace, you can see the pointed petals.
Uh the creamy apricot.
Um Yes, this is cutting also, but it's only a a 4-year-old cutting and it's not very tall, probably about um 1 ft tall, I think.
And compared to these ones here, these are these are cuttings.
These ones here.
These ones here. These are um Parfuma rose cuttings.
Now, these are only about uh this will be maybe the second summer, maybe 2 years old. Compared to this one here, this one is 4 years old.
So, Grace is not a very vigorous rose.
But, she is very pretty and nonetheless.
Oh, this peony is just covering This is my own cutting. I've got so many cuttings. This is uh the Pilgrim.
The Pilgrim cutting up.
The mother plant is grown uh on the other side of the fence.
And there's another Pilgrim poking over there.
Can't reach.
And I have a rose here which is uh not popular in the UK because we you just can't buy it. I got this from Town Centre Multum.
And this one is called uh Paul Bocuse.
Very, very intense scent. Let me just give it a sniff.
Mhm. Really, really nice scent. Quite fresh.
Lovely. And a huge cane.
Hoping that I would get some more canes.
Uh but, no. But, very, very healthy rose.
Really, really lovely.
So, that's uh Paul Bocuse. Very good scent. And quite um vigorous. I think once it gets going, she's only newly planted though, bear in mind.
Uh actually, you know, she's um she was bought from the first lot of Town Centre order. So, it's just uh 2 years old now, this one.
And uh we have this one here, another another rose, an unusual rose. This is called Versigny.
Um yeah, I don't think it's pretty as um Paul Bocuse. Um but, um yeah. Just glad to have her cuz she's quite unusual.
And another cutting. This is um I think it's Bathsheba, but I don't remember Bathsheba being like this. I thought it was more peach-like. As you can see, it's actually quite pink.
Maybe does have um different colors depending on the location it's grown in.
Uh it's a cutting of my brother's uh Bathsheba and very very intense fragrance. His Bathsheba is huge. It's almost grown into as big as a a a tree.
But uh yeah, very vigorous. As you can see, I'll just show you this Look at this new cane.
And this is probably a 3-year-old cutting.
Amazing. Very very vigorous rose, that one. Very very It does have this classic romantic um David Austin rose.
This one is Timeless Cream.
Timeless Cream is quite leggy. I think one of my least favorites of the Timeless collection.
Um because it's not very prolific.
It's a very pretty rose. I had moved this from my white border because the color didn't fit in. It was too much too much yellow.
So it's grown in here and my cutting Well, no, not a cutting. My bare root of Jude the Obscure.
Now, I wish I'd grown Jude the Obscure in a pot when I when it first arrived as a bare root because I've heard everyone say it it grows so much faster and stronger when it's planted in a pot initially.
And then uh I should have planted it in the ground uh at later stage. But yeah, she's really growing very very slowly.
Yeah, and being underneath the the tree here doesn't quite help.
So there's um Roald Dahl at the back there. Let's go and have a look at Roald Dahl.
So I've come to the other side of this tree now and there is a couple of roses here and there's even a pear tree.
Even a pear tree. So, this rose here is Roald Dahl.
This is a little hard to access or it's a bit of a way to walk to see this rose.
I never show it on my channel. Poor Roald Dahl, she's looking so pretty.
My Roald Dahl has pink tones in it.
I'm not sure whether it's because it's cooler and shadier here that it has this cooler tones rather than yellow or soft yellow.
Yeah, but she's she looks like she's doing all right here though. Really, really nice. Nicely branched out.
There's even a kale at the back over there.
And she's grown with a rose which I bought cheap on a sale one year. I didn't really know what it was. This This one is called Sweet Syrie.
I was looking at it very much.
But the fragrance is so strong.
Mhm.
Not much fragrance now, but I think the new bloom Let me try that new bloom there.
Mhm. Really nice fragrance. Sweet Syrie.
And yeah, the blooms are quite big.
And she's a healthy rose. That's why I planted her here because I feel that she can handle this um this shadier location. And she fills up the area nicely because it's quite an ugly area which I'm trying to um tidy up and there will be some new roses growing in here or whatever, some plants.
Yeah, so this is the back fence or the side fence of this area.
So, over on the other side, next to the shed, like I said, I was over there earlier with the Roald Dahl, and now I'm down here with uh Sharifa Asma, another very, very fragrant rose, retired variety.
Lovely rose.
And quite uh quite short, probably only about a foot and a half.
So, it's a nice uh nice very fragrant rose there, too. One that's quite recent. This one is super, super prolific.
And yet, this is a mature cutting from my brother.
And he doesn't like this rose because it's so thorny.
Uh and the blooms, I think it's not blowzy and romantic enough for him, but I like it because it's just so full of buds.
I I I don't really like thorny roses, either, but uh I think she will stay until maybe I get bored of looking at her, maybe, or maybe get bored of being scratched.
Uh over here is my last year's best performer.
A little bit sunburnt. Re- The old blooms have been in the sun for a whole 7 days because these blooms do last a long, long time.
So, this is uh Timeless Charisma.
Let me just take out that bloom.
There you go. See how See how burnt that is?
And there's a nice nice bud there.
That's perfect bud formation there, very typical rose shape, like a hybrid tea shape.
Very, very healthy, vigorous, tall.
So, that is Timeless Charisma.
On to another Timeless, I'm going to show you all the timeless collection today.
This one is timeless pink.
And timeless pink also very very healthy rose. Not as tall as timeless charisma.
I think the tallest in the timeless charisma collection has to be timeless sorry timeless collection has to be timeless charisma and timeless purple.
Really big healthy roses.
But these blooms are very very long-lasting. Look at that. I'm just going to show you this huge bloom there.
Bigger than my hand. Wow. That's an old bloom.
I'm just going to check out the fragrance.
Mhm. Yeah, still very nice fragrance even though the bloom is probably already probably 6 days old. It's still like a I would give it about four or five out of 10 for the fragrance for this old bloom here.
And it is about 9:00 a.m. in the morning. So not sure how that affects the fragrance.
So moving on to this area here. We'll just have a quick look. I think I've shown you um quite recently. So this is >> [laughter] >> Sorry about the squawking of the birds.
They're arguing.
They're arguing for territory or asking or fighting over mate. I don't know.
See over here is Julia Child.
Very very healthy rose.
Oh, even the ladybug. Even the ladybug is yellow.
You see that?
Right. So that is Julia Child.
And we have the lovely Eden Rose.
And I do have another Eden Rose down there. I bought from Town Centre in Beirut.
And there is a pink Eden. So Eden pink Eden Sizzling Pierre de Ronsard or something like that.
Um what do we have here? We have uh Chateau de Chiberta, Belle du Jour.
Just love the the yellow tones with a hint of a hint of pink in certain lights.
You see the hint of pink in certain lights where it goes yellow.
And that that's supposed to have a really strong fresh fragrance.
And this one here is probably one of the most fragrant roses.
A very old bloom. I didn't want to deadhead it because um I missed showing you at her best.
This is Pacific Blue.
I think believe by Tantau. Very very strong fragrance.
Super healthy rose.
Clean clean immaculate foliage.
I think she looks quite nice with a bit of um iris in there.
And we're moving on to um this is the parent plant to the one I showed you earlier. This is the Pilgrim.
And the Pilgrim, she's even growing into my magnolia tree over there.
So the Pilgrim is a very very healthy um climbing rose from David Austin.
She's not afraid to be uh stuck at the back by the fence, neglected.
Oh dear.
Yeah, and it may be even a little shady.
So this is the Pilgrim, really gorgeous rose.
Uh and moving on to another yellow David Austin. This is um Poet's Wife.
Uh this is the a bare root that I planted just this winter. So she's settling in.
And I do have I do have a cutting.
Um yeah, a cutting of a Poet's Wife.
So, that is this yellow section here, followed by this is Rhapsody in Blue.
And then we have the pretty Vanessa Bell.
So many blooms this year.
That is Vanessa Bell with uh some lupins and some the lectrum.
And don't forget this one I planted ages ago.
Although she doesn't quite fit in with my yellow border, she's uh definitely staying.
Uh I don't think I can move her. She's such a monster.
This is the Bonica rose.
Super easy to grow.
Bomb proof almost. She's like very very neglected because she's at the back. I don't deadhead her. I don't feed her. I don't do anything. And yet she's still masses. Look at that. It's just filling the whole of my phone screen.
So, now we are going to look at a very thorny rose, this one. Have to be careful because look how thorny she is. Look at those thorns. This is um Country Parson's. Not popular rose because I think because she is very very thorny.
I suppose you could grow this as a hedge to to intruders.
Maybe she's good for that.
So, she does fade to a very lovely cream color.
And have lots and lots of buds.
Lots and lots of buds.
Quite tall this year.
And I think in the autumn time I might have to move her because she really is in the wrong location.
Oh, but look at that. That is a perfect bloom.
That is Country Parson's. Let me go and smell her without scratching my eyes out.
Mhm.
Um, yeah, not too fragrant at the moment. I think she can be a bit more fragrant than that. I only give her a four at the moment.
But, um, yeah, she can be more fragrant than that.
Well, she's got to have something going for her.
Um, right. Let's have a look. This I was going through a blue rose phase and, um, I wanted uh, to compare Pacific Blue with Love Song.
Now, this is Love Song. Really, really lovely rose. It's a more of a rose shape.
Um, yeah, actually they're both very similar. This one, I think, is a bit more lavender-like.
I'm going to go in for a sniff.
Ah.
It's, I think, in my opinion, it's a prettier bloom, but nowhere near as fragrant as Pacific Blue.
Same health.
Same health, very, very healthy foliage.
Yeah, so that is Love Song.
So, I'll end this video with a look at my central border. There is so much in here that I think I'm going to take a while.
So, let's start off with this one here.
This is quite a tall rose, vigorous rose.
This is Lovely Perfuma from Kordes.
And the Perfuma range do normally have quite a strong fragrance.
But, I don't think this is very, very intense intense fragrance, but it is very strong and vigorous rose.
These blooms are plentiful and long-lasting.
Very strong canes that hold a bunch of heavy flowers very upright.
Look at that.
So, that is Summer Romance, Lovely Perfuma.
Actually, she's so tall that I actually run a a clematis uh, as a companion planting.
Very healthy rose. One of the healthiest and most vigorous of the perfumer range.
And we are going to move on to a David Austin.
Look at that. So many canes and so many blooms.
This one is Elizabeth.
And Elizabeth do start off with a blush apricot pink like this one here.
And the flowers fade to a very white white flower petals with a hit button eye. Look at that button eye. I just love a cute button eye.
And there's so many blooms yet to come.
I think even if you deadhead these ones here, there's still so many underneath that comes through.
And also a new cane.
Don't be fooled by Elizabeth's dainty pretty look because her leaves are so leathery and tough.
But yeah, you think that she's delicate, but she's not. She's a very vigorous strong rose and highly disease resistant.
Look at that. Oh my goodness. That is That is an armful, not even a handful.
That's an armful of roses.
Amazing.
Um not much scent, but super super prolific.
And we do have some Olivia Rose Austins.
Because she blooms so early. She's already on her second flush. So healthy.
Yeah. And some more uh ladybug larvae is just there.
And we have at the back Oh, I can't reach.
This is um Oh, I can see that one.
This is Gentle Hermione.
Gentle Hermione.
Now, not my favorite rose. I don't I don't not keen on the scent and also the the petal shatter only after 2 3 days.
Oh my goodness, my favorite. This is Mill on the Floss.
I just love her for her blooms.
So gorgeous. Look at that.
Just love the pink edging, the strong floral fragrance. It's just such a underrated rose. Why does not people more rate you know, rave about this rose? I really have no idea. They She is a sold as a as a bush.
But I have grown her as a climber because she gets so tall.
Just love love this rose.
Let me see if I can get you a better one with the with a slightly open because she does also have a a cute button eye as well.
Can you see that maybe?
It's like someone scooped the center out from this rose.
Gorgeous. Oh, I love this so much.
Lovely rose. That's just perfect. Yes, I mean you do need space for this uh Mill on the Floss. And she is a very strong vigorous rose and I have taken so many cuttings. I must have had about five cuttings from this um this rose.
She is um very vigorous.
And I have another Delish here because I love it so much. Again, one of my favorite roses.
Now, it's hard to compete. If you had said, which is my favorite, this is uh Delish, which is sweet Parfum de Provence.
Or Mill on the Floss.
I just I I I couldn't tell you.
I couldn't tell you which one's my favorite.
This one has stronger scent.
For sure. And I do love this uh the coloring. Do you see the coloring from this?
And then it And the inside, it does have a a fading of the edges.
Gorgeous blue. I got to give it a sniff cuz it's so strong.
Wow.
Wow.
Intense.
Um citrus rose, fruit, um I think all of it.
And from one fragrant rose to another, this one is famous for her scent. This is the famous Gertrude Jekyll. Now, I've been told to pronounce this as Jekyll. I don't know.
I thought it was uh Gertrude Jekyll, Gertrude Jekyll.
But you know which rose I mean. There's only one Gertrude Jekyll.
Only one.
Yeah. She's such an old variety.
And yet still very, very popular.
Really. And she started blooming so early.
Blooming so early. And she's still going strong.
Uh this is a rose called Pure Elise.
A little bit burnt by the sun, but we do have so many more buds to come.
Look at that. That's Pure Elise.
Moving on to another David Austin.
Now, we are getting to the other side of the border now, so it'll probably be the end of the video video soon.
This is Ancient Mariner.
Now, before I was into roses, I always thought Ancient Mariner um Olivia Rose Austin was so similar.
They are a little different.
Um Yeah, but very similar though. This is much more taller.
Um later to flower.
And this one does have Let me just check the fragrance again.
This has a a fragrance more so than Olivia.
And this one does continue the blooming season. If you were to buy Olivia and Ancient Mariner, you probably need both.
Olivia will bloom for you very very early and then she takes a break. And then the Ancient Mariner takes over.
And this one has fragrance.
And at the back this is a cutting. This is a 4-year-old cutting of Royal Jubilee from my brother's garden. I'm not sure if you've seen his video, Ken Volken. And he has a very huge uh Royal Jubilee in his garden.
And this is a cutting. So, this is an offspring of his Royal Jubilee and she's also quite tall.
His is about I don't know, like 8 ft tall and this one is also getting there.
And really lovely color blooms.
Nice uh shallot shape.
So, that is Royal Jubilee and these came from his garden as well. I only took a a handful of seeds.
And now this Love-in-a-Mist um I remember what the other name is.
They're just everywhere.
They are so cute though.
Only a handful of seeds and it's given me Just look at that. It's everywhere.
It might become a bit of a trouble weeding them out, but for now I'm just enjoying them.
And oh, this is not a rose. This is um or something bell at all. Really, really super fragrant and she does have this um a ring around the um the bottom of the flower.
A really fragrant shrub.
And I think we should end this video with a look at one of the most impressive blooming roses here.
This one is timeless purple.
Also known as Ladasha in some countries.
Look at that. The flowers are quite flat. As you can see, they're quite they're quite flat. Not sure if I can find a bloom for you that's quite flat.
See, it's quite flat. Opens really like a like a plate. [laughter] I don't know.
Like a plate.
Oh, that's a the very oval. See how flat it be It starts like this in a normal um flower shape and then it just the more it opens, the flatter it becomes with this rippled edging.
Wavy edging with a lighter lighter tones on the edging. Really, really beautiful. I'm just going to test out the scent again.
Mhm, nice. A nice scent.
Mhm, not super strong, but a good scent and clusters.
We are looking at clusters of amazing blooms. Look at that.
Wow.
Very strong strong rose, healthy rose.
Um I would definitely recommend this one from the timeless collection. This is prettier than timeless charisma.
I would say they are pretty um it would be quite a battle to see which is the better one, Timeless Charisma or Timeless uh purple.
Yeah, beautiful rose.
Well, that is the end of the garden tour two.
I shall see you very, very soon.
Thank you for watching.
Bye.
