In December 1999, Indian Airlines Flight IC-814, carrying 180 passengers from Kathmandu to Delhi, was hijacked by militants and flown to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where it was held for over seven days. The hijackers, led by Ahmed Kaji and Ibrahim Aari, demanded the release of prisoners and political prisoners. The incident required complex diplomatic negotiations involving India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee leading the crisis management efforts. The hijackers were eventually released, and the passengers were safely returned to India, marking one of the most significant aviation security challenges in Indian history.
