NOAA: Developing El Niño expected to weaken Atlantic hurricane season | FOX 10 PhoenixAdded:
Scientists at Noah say the developing El Nino is expected to weaken this year's Atlantic hurricane season. That is good news for states like Florida and Louisiana. Forecasters predict 8 to 14 named storms with up to six becoming hurricanes and one to three major storms. Experts say El Nino typically surpasses storm activity in the Atlantic. And by the way, they are predicting wetter than normal in the southwest United States. This could be very helpful for Arizona.

>> Well, we might get a jump on some of that rain as we get on into Memorial Day for the mountains. Here in the valley, we're probably going to be on the dry side. Do you know over the last uh well, since we started keeping records in Phoenix in 1896, do you know how much rain we've accumulated over every Memorial Day if you add up every Memorial Day since 1896?
2/10en of an inch. So, you're pretty likely to escape Memorial Day uh with a pretty dry Monday around these parts.
However, if you're in the mountains, could be a different story. We'll show you why here in a moment. 96 is where we stand at Sky Harbor. Wow, what a beautiful day it's been in Flagstaff.
Blue skies with a few thin clouds out there. 71 is where we've topped out this afternoon. And again, over the next couple of days, things are looking pretty good out there. Here's your Saturday in the mountains. 74 in Flagstaff. A beautiful 80 for Prescat and Sholo. Maybe 86 or so over in Sedona. And uh the mountain forecast through the weekend and into Monday shows you this for this is Flagstaff for instance, 74 and 75 for Sunday. Uh by Monday though, temperatures drop a good 10° and we're bringing on a very good chance for rain. About a 70% possibility of thunderstorms, so just be ready for it. That's Monday, but your weekend so far looks really terrific. And uh you can see uh wherever you're headed, if you're headed out to LA or San Diego, really anywhere in coastal uh California, it's going to be a good-looking weekend also, at least for Saturday and Sunday. Uh however, once we get on into Monday, as I mentioned, that little low is going to pop up and that's going to be uh what perhaps will drive some showers into the mountains east of the valley and northern into northern Arizona also. So, just be prepared for it. Otherwise, it's going to be again a really nice run for the next couple of days. Today was a beauty, too. We made it to uh 98, just a hair above the average, our official high. We were flirting with a pretty normal temperature, and we'd love to see that.
93 now in Apache Junction. Uh we've got 95 in Chandler. 95 as well out there with the good guys and gals at Luke Air Force Base. 88 degrees out Wikcinberg Way. And hello, Kingman. You come in at 85. Almost 100 now at Bullhead City. Uh 84 in Globe and 73 degrees in Springerville. So around the rest of the nation, it's been a warm day across the south. 91 in Odessa now. Uh 70 though in Kansas City and a cool 62 in Chicago, 56° over in Philly. And again, it's been kind of a wet one. anywhere east of the Mississippi River, it's been kind of a soaker all the way from Louisiana up to Pittsburgh and then uh from really Springfield, Illinois, all the way out to DC. So uh also northern parts of the plains, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin catching showers, too. Uh some rain in the Rockies, but other than that, west of there, uh and that includes us, of course, it's been a pretty nice uh day.
So here's the way things look for tonight. Fair skies, 67 in Yuma and Hila Ben. Uh 52 for Prescuit and about 39 over at Window Rock tomorrow. There you see it. No matter where you are, it's going to be a nice clear Saturday. 95 for Yuma, 86 in Sedona. And here's the rest of that 10day stretch. Again, here in the valley, we'll call it a 10% chance for maybe a Memorial Day sprinkle. But after that, cooler weather descends relatively anyway. You know, if you're in Indianapolis or I don't know, Asheville, North Carolina, and you say cooler, they don't think of 97 or 94 as being cooler, >> but uh we do. And so, looks like a pretty good week next.
>> So, this is the gift.
>> Yes, this was the gift that I was mentioning for you.
>> I appreciate this very much. I'm very touched.
>> It beats 107 97.
>> Yeah. No kidding.
>> Oh, you're He's touched.
>> I am touched by John. is generally a stoic when it comes to those kinds of things.
>> No, I'm I'm moved.
>> I'm glad I stayed in on Friday.
>> Yeah, worth it.
