In 1972, a man named Michelle Seiffra went down alone into a deep cave. No natural light, no clocks, no sound from the outside world. He wanted to know what happens to the human mind with no reference points. He stayed for 6 months and what happened to him changed what we knew about the brain. He completely lost his sense of time. He thought 2 hours had passed when five had actually gone by. His memory started to fail. His mind grew slow and confused.
He began to believe he was losing his sanity. And the most unsettling part is that he chose to be there. His healthy, willing brain fell apart from nothing but a lack of stimulation. But silence doesn't only affect those who seek it.
It's also used as punishment. Think about isolation in prisons. Solitary confinement, a small cell, no contact, almost no sound, and almost no stimulation. The studies are brutal.
Within days, many prisoners begin to suffer severe anxiety, hallucinations, panic attacks. Some lose the ability to think clearly. The United Nations considers more than 15 days of this a form of torture. And notice the detail.
