Carville is merely dressing up his partisan wishful thinking as sophisticated analysis to comfort an out-of-touch establishment. He mistakes the echo chamber of the beltway for the actual pulse of a disillusioned working class.

James Carville: Trump Supporters Have Buyers Remorse本站添加:
Most of them did vote for Trump. And they got real buyer's remorse now, which I think is a good sign. I mean, we now we know that young people are start have real buyer's remorse. We know that there's real buyer's remorse among Hispanics. And apparently among blue-collar people is pretty substantial.
James, my optimism about the midterms remains high.
And there [music] was more good news than bad this week, but there were some setbacks.
Uh in Indiana, Trump with massive spending defeated five of the seven Indiana state senators who refused to follow his order uh on gerrymandering congressional districts.
The hope was if four or five of those survived, it would send a message to other Republicans.
That didn't happen.
Uh and uh I must say I am increasingly worried about the Michigan Senate race.
Mallory McMorrow, who was the strongest candidate I thought, CNN found old emails where she seemed to prefer California to the Midwest. Not exactly a uh a good uh credential for you running in Michigan. She might be able to come back. The establishment is moving more and more to Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who just isn't a very good candidate.
And my great worry is that [clears throat] this left-wing >> [cough] >> left-winger El Saïd will get the nomination and he can't win.
So, that's a worry. And finally, the Republican Supreme Court, the Republican Supreme Court, went further and not only gutted the Voting Rights Act, but they really expedited the ability of some Southern states, Louis- Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama, to move to knock out black lawmakers this year and pick up an extra three or four seats.
So, all that I think was Trump. The good news, Trump changes his pitch daily, sometimes hourly, on what to do about this reckless decision to go to war in Iran.
He has no idea what to do. Uh I think he also said affordability is or a hoax. Uh tell that to some Ohio worker paying almost five bucks for gas or to Latinos in South Texas losing their health insurance. And I talked to Barney Frank this week, uh who said Uh the price he said Trump had one good thing going for him. He knew how to play the anger. He knew how to play the grievance. But he was a one-trick pony, and guess what? That's gone. And I think that's right. And I guess the polls just get worse and worse.
But my final bit of good news, as you know, a special Senate election in Michigan, Democrats once again out performed. So, more good than bad, little few as I say, a few setbacks, but I think the basic bottom line hasn't changed much.
Well, I would take your bad news, actually.
The worst news is Wayne County. And we just live under a adjunct of the Republican National Committee. I mean, it is evidenced by the fact that this circuit is ruling out in late April on an election year. They were in such a hurry to help Republican candidates they just couldn't help themselves.
Uh that's That's genuinely bad news.
The uh the race in Indiana is I don't think is bad. I mean, that's a Republican problem. And by the way, even the people who vote Trump got a significant number of votes. Trump, you understand, needs 90 percent plus of Republicans, and right now he's down to 80.
We don't need a lot cuz cuz the Democrats are, you know, 95% of the Well, they're Your concerns about Michigan are totally legitimate. Uh it it is not very difficult to see this go in a in a in a in a less than stellar direction. I would point out that a special in the state Senate last night Michigan again just blew the hinges off expected performance in the department by 20 points.
So but I I I certainly share your concerns about the Supreme Court. I certainly am worried about Michigan.
I don't think the Indiana Republican primary is indicate much other than Trump has a a poll on a large part of the Republican Party but an insufficient hold not to cause me actually think this thing came out perfectly.
>> [clears throat] >> Because if you're thinking about breaking with Trump for the general election this will scare the hell out of you. But you can't win unless you break with it partially. So I I I think Indiana I wouldn't call it good news or bad news.
I think call it water sign.
>> [snorts] >> Well the reason [clears throat] I said it was a bit of a setback cuz the hope was if most of those seven who he was campaign spending lots of money sending all of his henchmen and if they survived I think it would have sent a message to other Republicans and it might have created some fissures. It may be that you we don't want those fissures James. It may be we want this just to be a total Trump party. I don't know.
That's a good question and I'm kind of torn you know when come Labor Day a Republican candidate is you know do they totally embrace Trump or do they try to get some distance? I don't I mean I I think your your choice is the burning ship or the freezing sea.
But it's going to be fun to watch him have to make that decision and the polling too we must note continues to deteriorate.
David Shore had the redo his chart cuz it ran out of space for how low he had gone.
So uh uh yeah we Michigan stuff is a little scary. The I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I But Miskin is a >> Yeah, I mean Cala I didn't watch the California debate. I was in an event in New York with my wife last night. I I read about it this morning.
Uh I don't think I frankly think a Democrat is more likely than not to be the next governor of California. Doesn't matter a whole lot. Um this is not a novel thought of mine. I've been picking up from a lot of other people. Uh it looks like uh uh what's his name, the former attorney general and HHS secretary, Chebara. It looks like he's the Joe Biden of Cali- He's the remainder man.
Uh you know, that's while well topped out. Katie Porter's kind of obnoxious.
Uh Steyer is uh uh you know, not a not a leader. So, I don't know. I I I would bet that at least one Democrat will be in that runoff and they'll win.
And they probably won't be a very memorable but that's not bad news.
>> Well, I'm Sheriff you know, it's highly qual- I don't know. I mean, I shouldn't say. The guy that I know people like I people say they don't have a chance is a guy who's a mayor of San Jose. But I I Is the guy what, from San Jose?
Mayor of San Jose and his name is Sam.
>> Yeah. Yeah, the he he sounds impressive, but the whole Silicon billionaires are rallying around him. That gives me some pause.
>> Right. That's that's that's really that's the message, but people say he's impressive. Yeah, I mean, I would I would tell ever- everyone Yeah, if if you want to find out about the Silicon Valley billionaires who turned right-wing for Trump for one reason only, money, money, money, greed, read the wonderful piece George Packer has in the current Atlantic on David Sachs and who these people are and what they want. Uh and boy, I'll tell you uh they uh they they they want an oligarchy to run America.
Yeah, the then thing going back to the Indiana point, there's a huge election coming up along the same lines and that's the special and I think it's Kentucky 3, the Thomas Massie seat.
If Massie survive and it's a primary, it's a primary. It's a Republican primary for the most prominent critic on the Republican side and they're putting a lot of money. I think that would if if Massie were to win and and I don't know and I don't I haven't seen any really reliable polling but that that would be a bigger blow than if the some of the Indiana Republican state senators lost.
Oh, that'll be a huge blow because he hates Massie. Massie gives him all kinds of problems.
>> everything in there and it's Kentucky and it's actually a congressional seat.
So, you you I I I I that's on the watch list.
That one has got to be you know, high.
It does. It does. You know, the Iran stuff is incredible. I mean, this you talk about the gang that can't shoot straight. I'm obviously not talking about the military. Different story by different people on different days. And there's this very simple explanation. Why did Trump go in when he had said he didn't believe in foreign wars? He said he didn't believe in foreign wars cuz he wanted to campaign against the Democrats. He wanted to claim that they were they were the advocates of foreign wars.
Actually, it was George Bush that went into Iran and Afghanistan. But be that as it may, that's he he's situational.
And then what happens? He goes to Venezuela, it's a piece of cake.
And he goes and he bombs Iran last June and you know, no real recriminations.
So, he thinks, "Hey, I'm I mean, read the Ashley Parker piece in the Atlantic where Trump now says he's gone beyond Washington and Lincoln, James. He now sees himself as Julius Caesar or Alexander the Great or or Napoleon Bonaparte. So he says, "Hey, I'm Alexander the Great. I can go in and I can take care of it in a couple days."
Well, he hasn't. And it's a it's a war that is going to be costly. We're losing people. We're going to suffer economically. And I think America's standing in the world the great war for China and maybe for Russia, but not for the United States.
>> are grander or a sign of of slipping relevance at cognitive you know, when people as they're going down, which he is going down. He by the way, he's going really down in in in November. And he's going to get in to the extent you you think he does he can't get any crazier. Let me assure you, he can get crazier. And this is but one example. Now, what he may try to do is start another god damn war. I mean I you know, we don't we don't know. But I'm out here on the West Coast raising money.
And people are so mortified about what he's going to you know, what we talk about all the time but what he's going to pull off between now and election day. And that and you got to worry about what he's going to do in the foreign policy already between now and election day because this swift and impending doom is coming.
I mean that somebody he he's got to know that. They can't protect him enough. No.
You can feel it. It's not just that the polling is bad.
You can feel it. I mean you you you walk around and and you can just see the anger and the anger coming from people that you don't you would never expect.
You would look at them and you would think they were Republicans. I mean I saw it at the Kentucky Derby.
And it's it's more integrated than you think, but I've sat in fifth floor. It was all from people. I mean I was surprised. And one more thing is Jimmy Williams whose dad was a friend of mine who's headed a Philadelphia painters is now his son Jimmy is the head of the international painters union and he told me he sat with me at the Derby his dad's a old friend of mine and he said their members they couldn't they a lot most of them did vote for Trump and they got real buyers remorse now which I think is a good sign I mean we now we know that young people are starting to have real buyers remorse we know that there's real buyers remorse among Hispanics and apparently among blue collar people is pretty substantial Well I took a round trip last night and this morning Acela Washington New York and I'll bet you I had I don't know as many as a half dozen people just walking down the aisle getting off getting on stop by a seat saying hey when are we going to get rid of this guy and two of them volunteered that they had voted for him so I think it's the same You can feel like again it's not like we're not humans we go we travel you go we go to New York you go to Los Angeles you go through an airport or a train station you can feel the 34% I mean that's my my point it's just in it's just going to get worse and worse is that but the end of the evidence to the extent it matters you're on a train or is a good example of that Yeah I mean well you know you take the Acela [clears throat] train to Kentucky Derby we've covered a range James last uh We covered a lot here Jim Oh man Okay um should we do the ads now?
Yes >> [music] >> Mhm.
