He took a small hunting lodge 20 km outside Paris and turned it into the most expensive building project in French history. 35,000 workers spent 54 years constructing it. He then invited every powerful noble in France to come and live there permanently, keeping them distracted with parties, ceremonies, and gossip while he ran the country alone.
