Heinrich Schliemann's 1876 discovery of six royal shaft graves at Mycenae, containing over 15 kg of gold from a single burial circle, revealed only part of the story; subsequent discoveries in 1951 of a seventh shaft and a separate royal burial circle (Grave Circle B) outside the citadel walls suggest that a third royal tomb, potentially containing Agamemnon's true burial treasure, may still lie undisturbed beneath Mount Zara, as ancient road networks converge on spots never fully excavated.

Agamemnon's Gold Still Sleeps — Mycenae's Hidden Royal TombAjouté :
Who will become the owner of this treasure?
In 1876, a man obsessed with Homer arrived at the windswept hill of Mycenae, Greece.
Heinrich Schliemann had already claimed to find ancient Troy.
Now he was hunting for the gold of Agamemnon himself.
Inside the citadel walls, Schliemann's [music] workers struck stone.
Six royal shaft graves emerged from the earth, packed with staggering treasure.
Gold death masks, ornate bronze swords, silver cups, amber jewelry, and gleaming golden breastplates.
Over 15 kg of gold from a single burial circle. But Schliemann stopped too soon.
A year later, his colleague Stamatakis uncovered a seventh shaft.
Then in 1951, an entirely separate royal burial circle, grave circle B, was found completely outside the citadel walls, hidden for over 3,000 years.
Mycenae's nine known tholos tombs dot the hillsides beyond the fortress.
Most were robbed in antiquity.
>> [music] >> The treasury of Atreus, the grandest of them all, was emptied before modern archaeology existed. Whatever gold it once held is gone forever.
>> [music] >> Or is it? Archaeological surveys of the surrounding terrain reveal ancient road networks converging on spots never fully excavated. Scholars believe the true royal tomb of Agamemnon's bloodline may still lie buried beneath the slopes of Mount Zara, waiting.
The earth there has never been turned.
Study the ancient roads that lead away from the Lion Gate.
Ancient travelers knew where the king slept.
Follow the path toward Mount Zara, where the Chavos Gorge [music] cuts through the hillside.
The earth there has never been fully turned.
The whispers [music] of the past sometimes pose questions for the present. What do you think is the outcome of this story?
If you want to know the full story, keep exploring.
