The brain's nervous system responds to perceived threats with automatic physiological reactions like increased heart rate and fight-or-flight activation, but through repeated, safe exposure to distressing stimuli, the nervous system becomes desensitized and stops reacting, which is the fundamental mechanism behind effective trauma therapy where controlled, repeated processing of traumatic memories reduces the body's stress response.

Repetition teaches safety. The brain stops reacting. #shortsHinzugefügt:
If you were to be watching [music] a scary movie, then you were to watch that movie the very first time when that jump scare happens, when that thing jumps at the camera, we are biologically wired that when something happens that is threatening, even if it's in a movie, our heart rate's going to accelerate, we're going to temporarily go into our sympathetic nervous system mode, and we're going to react to that thing. If all we do is stay away from that scary movie now it's a time later on and watching that again, we're going to have the same startle response. What would happen if I asked you to watch it a hundred times? You're going to be so desensitized, you're going to have no nervous system response to it at all.
And in some ways in trauma therapy, that's kind of what [music] we're doing.
In the safest way possible with a therapist present in the room, we want to [music] take people back to those memories and those traumatic experiences that are hijacking them at the least [music] opportune times when they're the most vulnerable.
Because with the repetition of that over time, human beings will become [music] desensitized.
And that thing that used to strike people into a panic attack, all of a sudden it's just that thing that they remember happening, but the nervous system is not as activated as it once was.
