When high temperatures combine with high humidity, the heat index (feels-like temperature) increases significantly, making conditions feel much hotter than the actual temperature. This occurs because humidity reduces the body's ability to cool itself through sweating. In North Texas during the transition from May to June, temperatures near 90°F combined with high humidity create dangerous conditions where feels-like temperatures can reach triple digits, requiring precautions such as staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and protecting pets from heat-related dangers.

Heat and humidity surge as North Texas heads into JuneAdded:
What? As that sun starts to head to the west, folks down there in downtown Dallas across from the museum at Klyde Warren Park, may- maybe a little breeze for them, hopefully, tonight. It's been warm today.
>> Oh, yeah. They'll need all the help they can get, Steve, because the heat is on.
Now that we are transitioning from May to June, that is when we get the June-like heat mixed with a May-like humidity. When you get that combination of those two things, the heat index, the feels like temperature just skyrocket.
And that's exactly what I'm tracking here, not just for today, but as we head into the early parts of next week, as well. In the meantime, partly cloudy skies here across parts of North Texas, including DFW. Temperature-wise, though, look at that, 90°. But as Steve was talking about, look at this, winds out of the south clocking in at 18 mph. That breeze is really going to help things out here as far as making it feel a little bit more comfortable. But look at these temperatures right now, still upper 80s to low 90s outside, very hot for this time of year. On radar, not really tracking much of anything. We have a severe thunderstorm watch for the Southern Texas Panhandle, but overall, partly cloudy skies here. It's warm, it's hot, it's muggy here across parts of North Texas. But as we head into tomorrow, take a look at this. This is what it's going to feel like tomorrow afternoon. We'll see feels like temperatures in the upper 90s to even some triple digits across North Texas.
Heading into Monday, look at this.
Monday looking like it's going to be even hotter than what I'm tracking tomorrow with widespread 100° feels like temperatures there Monday afternoon and into Monday evening. And then as we head into Tuesday, Tuesday if you live along or east of I-35, that's where the humidity is going to be extra soupy.
That's why it's going to feel extra hot there as we head into Tuesday afternoon.
But as we head throughout the next 10 days, you can see upper 90s here for to- tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday. After that, we'll see temperatures dropping into the 90s, but once again, the average high for this time of year, upper 80s. So, we're still going to see temperatures well above historical averages as we go forward. As far as any organized rain chances none here for tomorrow or Monday but then after that we'll see some low rain chances Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday but as we head into next weekend that's when the rain chances really start to kind of organize a little bit and we'll definitely take that for sure. Heading into tonight overnight lows average supposed to be upper 60s we'll be comfortably above that with overnight lows in the mid 70s here as the sun comes up for your early Sunday. Tomorrow afternoon air temperatures will be in the mid 90s but once again that humidity is going to make it feel even hotter and then as we head into Monday the heat's not letting up just yet mid 90s there Monday afternoon but once again it's not the heat it's the humidity. It'll feel like the triple digits there Monday afternoon but one thing I do want to point out is yes as we go forward the heat is on.
Now's the time to remember those heat safety tips drink plenty of water wear loose fitting light colored clothing and once again make sure your pets have protection from this kind of weather as well. Make sure they have adequate access to shade and clean cool water because we're going to be tracking highs in the upper 90s it's going to feel like the triple digits here as we head throughout the next couple of days and always remember that when you're taking those pets for a walk if the ground is too hot for your palms it's going to be too hot Steve for their paws.
