The United States has indicted former Cuban President Raul Castro, who was Cuba's defense minister at the time, for conspiracy to kill US nationals, destruction of aircraft, and four counts of murder related to the 1996 incident where two civilian planes flown by Miami-based Cuban exiles were shot down over the Atlantic Ocean. This indictment represents a significant escalation in US pressure on Cuba, which has included blockading fuel deliveries and threatening military action, with President Trump expressing intentions to conduct what he called a 'friendly takeover' of the island unless Havana opens its economy to US investments.
