Virginia Beach daycare employee charged with felony child abuse

[00:00:00]A Virginia Beach woman is facing serious charges, accused of abusing a child at a daycare. Breanna Fallon joins us in studio now with the details. Breanna.

[00:00:08]Police arrested 63-year-old Jimmy Grantham on Sunday on a felony child abuse charge. Right now, attorneys say the child still is under medical care, noting the allegations are disturbing.

[00:00:22]The alleged incident happened in March at Just For Kids Preschool and Child Care Center. When a 10-month-old child allegedly returned home from the daycare with a broken shin. John Baker with Cooper Early Injury Lawyers says since the incident social services conducted an investigation.

[00:00:38]Their findings include allegations of a staff member grabbing a 10-month-old's foot and fracturing the shin, hitting a 10-month-old on the head, and even picking up other infants by their arms, by one arm.

[00:00:52]While Baker says his team is still investigating the incident to see if civil action will be taken, criminally Virginia Beach police charged 63-year-old Jimmy Grantham for felony child abuse. This is a 10-month-old who can't speak up on his own behalf or even walk, and is, you know, literally, you know, dependent 100% upon adults at the daycare. It's just awful. Now, other parents who had children at the daycare are speaking out, saying they had concerns. I will say they did not stay there long.

[00:01:24]And unfortunately, my son had an incident where he came home and we found bruises on his back. Jasmine Klepman says her children attended the daycare years ago, claiming her son's incident resulted in a child protective services investigation. Klepman says she empathizes with the family and hopes the 10-month-old and his mother get justice.

[00:01:43]>> Just really pray for that family and that little boy. That is horrendous and traumatic what happened, and it's definitely not something that anybody expects when you sign your kids up for child care.

[00:01:54]We did get a hold of Grantham directly on the phone today, but she declined to comment. Briana Fallon, 13 News Now.
