India successfully navigated the energy crisis caused by the US-Iran war by leveraging its strategic petroleum reserves (holding 60 days of oil supply), diversifying energy imports from Africa, Latin America, and the US, and implementing diplomatic strategies to secure alternative supplies, demonstrating how nations can maintain energy security through proactive reserve management and supply chain diversification during geopolitical conflicts.

How Did India Tackle Energy Crisis Ensued By Iran War? Col. Rajeev Bagga Explains | USAñadido:
If you see the 80% of oil is come from the Iran or the Gulf countries, we require 5 million uh barrels for a day. And at the time, that is the middle of this uh month, May I'm talking about, we were having 4.4 millions. Ladies and gentlemen, 1,000 crore Indian currency losses we are facing every day. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to discuss one of the most hot topic, that is the energy crisis all over the world.
But what is uh I'm going to talk about here today is the national interest. How much India can sustain in the midst of war?
And yesterday only the Iran and US relations have gone into a short corner. Okay.
Ladies and gentlemen, it may you may recall when the war commence on 28th of April, India was having the storage of almost 74 74 days. Right? And if I talk about how much we have gone through, the war has entered almost the 90th day.
And uh out of this, 40 days war the direct conflict between Iran and US and Israel, and 50 days for Israel the ceasefire.
But during this course, our country has really planned or really had done remarkable job. My compliments. Why so?
How? But there are still certain loopholes which we need to discuss, which I will discuss subsequently.
All right.
When I talk about a war, Israel and US, they carried out preemptive strikes on Iran, and they presumed that it will go off within 2 days time span. But, they carried out a miscalculation.
Iran was very well prepared, and they were preparing for this eventuality for two decades.
Okay, where are we now?
How our country is reacting to this energy crisis, and that is which is a result of this war.
Okay.
Let's take the example from the analysis or the data of financial year 2025-26, okay, how much uh energy we have imported from Gulf region.
If you see that 80% of oil um is come from the Iran or the Gulf countries, right? If I give you the breakdown, it is almost Iraq 17.8, and then uh Saudi Arabia 14.5, then UAE 11.7, and above all, Russians are supplying or giving us oil that is almost 30.5.
Okay.
If you see in the mid of May, that is 14th, 15th I'm talking about, even the war has gone or we have seen the various phases of a war, we really mastered ourselves or really uh uh crossed this bridge so dynamically that we still were holding 60 days of oil with us. How it was possible?
And this was basically the smart strategy which were done by our diplomats and our great government. Hats off to them. Okay.
If I talk about our daily consumption, we require 5 million uh barrels for a day, and at the time, that is the mid of this uh month, May I'm talking about, we were having 4.4 millions and the balance was compensated 0.6 million barrels were compensated from the uh our strategic reserves.
Okay, let's talk about the strategic reserve also.
Right.
India has installed almost 5.33 mi million metric tons of storage and that is in Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, and Padur.
But, do you think it is sufficient? Here is the thing why the prices have gone up. The prices have gone up because we still got a capacity to complete our phase two, that infrastructure is not finished till date.
If we finish it off, our storage will be double. If we are holding at present 39 million barrels, right? And if we complete our this storage, that phase two, it will be doubled up and the prices will definitely come down. That's the major reason.
And now, you need to again understand why prices are going up.
Ladies and gentlemen, 1,000 crore Indian currency losses we are facing every day.
Why?
The first thing is that the double naval blockade which has been done by the US and the Iran, uh we are getting hardly any supply.
But, the our smart strategy was we have started importing our now this energy from various other countries, that is Africa, Latin America, and US. And we have also got a waiver from US for 30 days more.
But, the thing is that that is again not sufficient.
We need to really address with the other energies also.
That is I'm talking about the water and the air or the wind which we have got in ample in our area. We should not simply bank on what the supply which is coming from the Gulf.
And we also require to realign our road map for the pipeline which is coming from the Oman.
If this is met or if it is addressed, I think the prices will come down and the scenario will be much better, but I once again compliment to our diplomats who have done a wonderful job and ours is the only country who is sustaining during this phase and that's the remarkable achievement. Thank you very much.
