Single vs Double Embryo Transfer: Which IVF Option Gives a Healthier Baby?

[00:00:09]This is a very common question from our IVF patients because many times the patient wants us to undergo IVF and complete our family in one go.

[00:00:20]I want to tell you this statement through one of my clinical experiences or real life stories.

[00:00:26]A couple came to us who was an NRI couple. He wanted to undergo IVF treatment due to PCOD.

[00:00:34]We did IVF on the patients.

[00:00:36][Music] She had a good blast and we counseled the patient at that time to go for a single embryo transfer. But the patient even after long counselling gave us her consent for twin embryo transfer only. We did IVF for the patient. The patient became pregnant. And on ultrasound it was documented as a twin pregnancy. The pregnancy was going very smooth until five months [music].

[00:00:59]And when the level two scan was done at the end of five months, the patient's cervical end shot started appearing in it.

[00:01:07]After that the patient underwent continuous ultrasound. In that his Gunek [music] advised the patient for cervical and circle.

[00:01:16]After an encirclement the patient continued for one month. But she delivered around 25-26 weeks.

[00:01:24]Twin babies were delivered, one of which was a premature delivery. The Babies Were Two Weeks.

[00:01:33]One of those babies survived only for a few days in an ICU. [MUSIC] And the second twin put up quite a fight. And he remained in NICU for 3 months.

[00:01:44]But as [MUSIC] The parents that like they had a very bad time. Because they saw that child going with multiple problems. He underwent surgeries.

[00:01:55]His brain became watery. After that the child could not survive. A few days ago we received a call from that patient saying, Ma'am, you had advised that you should have gone for single embryo transfer.

[00:02:08]When s was going through this like bad face. I was remembering what you said.

[00:02:14]Because in IVF, as a doctor, our motive is not just to see beta SCG positive or ultrasound pay to embryos. We want a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby to be delivered. There was another patient who was elderly. She was a patient of high blood pressure.

[00:02:32]We insisted him a lot. So the patient took our advice and opted for single embryo transfer [music].

[00:02:39]Despite so many medical conditions, with proper monitoring and guidance, the patient completed her entire nine-month journey and delivered a healthy baby and now the mother and the baby are doing fine. So sometime you feel that means we take the decision that we will complete our family by conceiving twin embryos together.

[00:03:04]But when we see such stories, witness them, we don't feel good. So it is always that we should take a right decision. Because our motive is to deliver a healthy baby with a healthy mother. And at the Lyme of Fertility we always encourage single embryo transfer. Because we know after 3 months, usually the journey of the patient progresses like a natural conception. So the patient does not have to put in any extra efforts.
