[00:00:53]Hello everybody and welcome to the BHLY Eagles podcast on a Thursday afternoon live from the Xfinity Lounge and presented by our friends at Ashley Bo Wolf Fran Duffy. We are a day removed from the first open OTAA of the spring.

[00:01:14]We got to hear from Jaylen Herz, Seaquan Barkley, Jordan Davis, and Zack Bond.

[00:01:21]And we're going to talk about it. Plus, I got some I got some thoughts. I have I have ruminated on the Tanner McKe Andy Dalton >> situation and and I'm going to tell you later in the show for NY. I think this is actually good news for Tanner McKe.

[00:01:35]>> Okay. I'm interested to hear that. I'm here to hear because I have paid zero thought into that conversation since we last had it yesterday.

[00:01:42]>> Okay.

[00:01:42]>> Yeah. Just thinking about it. I got some thoughts.

[00:01:45]>> Good.

[00:01:45]>> But I think the big thing to talk about here is what Jaylen Herz had to say. So, let's do it. Why don't we Why don't we kick it off with the right people? Presented by our friends at True Mark, right at Union. The right people. Now, uh you and I both separately sort of came in with a smile on our face.

[00:02:08]>> Yeah.

[00:02:08]>> About listen, it's a press conference.

[00:02:12]>> Leia. Yes.

[00:02:13]>> One day of OTAAS. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. it. I if if I told myself I was going to say that a press conference in May mattered, I would probably think you were you showing me a different version of myself. And yet I'm buying stock in the Eagles.

[00:02:33]>> I'm buying stock. I'm buy >> just based off of Jaylen Herz's press conference yesterday. You agree? based off of that with hearing from Shawn Manion last week >> and >> and Nick Sriani yesterday as well. I think hearing that triumphant speak over the last eight days. Um >> I'm optimistic.

[00:02:50]>> I'm feeling pretty good.

[00:02:51]>> Yeah.

[00:02:52]>> Let's here's what he said about Shawn Man. Um he said it's been a really good process so far. He's come in and he's very clear given good direction. You can definitely see the vision. He's been able to answer all of my questions. Very instructive, very helpful. It's been a very enjoyable journey so far.

[00:03:16]And we'll get more into some of the specifics of what he talks about because there is some real good football nuggets in there.

[00:03:23]>> Um, but just starting from what is their relationship like? Yep. Of course, Jaylen's not going to throw the guy under the bus, but he's he's said some things in the past that are not quite so flowery. And when he talks about uh we can get into the undercenter thing he talks about and explaining the why. I think it's very clear that Jaylen wants to know the why behind a lot of things. It's part of the reason that some people have said he's been difficult to coach. To me, that means he's asking the right questions and maybe he's not getting the right answers. He's getting those answers from Shawn Manion because Shawn Manion is coming in here with uh a real belief and a real foundational understanding of what it is he wants to build.

[00:04:10]I think that, you know, and it's one of the things we've talked about a lot when talking about the frustrations with the Eagles offense and namely the passing game is that when you talk about the dynamic between player and coach, especially quarterback and coach, and you say like, "All right, well, is is Jaylen Herz not coachable? Are the coaches not doing enough job a good enough job of communicating to Jaylen Herz and reaching him and uh fostering that level of belief?" And I have always been of the belief that, you know, and this is just me personally, that fault lies on both sides of that. It's a the communication works both ways. And so I think it's incumbent upon Jaylen to to be more open. I think it's incumbent upon the coaches to do more to kind of meet him in the middle and, you know, find ways to be able to, you know, uh, inspire your player to to believe in what you're doing. And it's tough listening to Jaylen yesterday and not try and juxtapose, oh well, if he's saying this about this coach, that means he wasn't getting it from the last coach.

[00:05:06]>> Yeah.

[00:05:06]>> It's important to remember all these players when they're when they go out for a press conference, >> they are, you know, you're you meet with >> team PR, right? And you go through things to say. Uh that said, not everything that a player is going to go through is going to be straight from the organization because those players also, especially someone like Jaylen, like Jaylen's got his own >> Jaylen's got his own things that he wants to get across. Um which most high-profile players do. Um >> I think Jaylen wanted to make it clear like that. Yeah. Like I'm >> I'm liking what I'm saying. Yeah, I think I think he's smitten. Jaylen is is very intentional. Yeah. About this stuff >> and I you just think about the undercenter stuff and I'll read you what exactly what he said in a second.

[00:05:48]>> Yes.

[00:05:48]>> But you know, you compare it to last year and we're not throwing anybody under the bus, but it's not like they built the offense around that last season. Yes.

[00:05:57]>> It was a thing that they they tried to go to mid-season because the offense was struggling. The passing game was struggling. And so if you're Jaylen and you're asking about that, you're you're sort of testing like, do you really know what you're doing here? Yeah. Or not.

[00:06:11]And if you're not getting those answers, of course, you're going to bristle a little bit and be like, well, why are we going to do it if we don't if if it if we're just trying something that we don't know very well.

[00:06:20]>> Motion for motion sake is like you go back to like that. It's the that idea but with all these other aspects that we're talking about.

[00:06:26]>> And then you go back to the intentionality of what he said at his end of season press conference about wanting to find a home. Mhm.

[00:06:34]>> You know, whether they I think part of bringing in Shawn Manion is even if it's not Shawn Manion, this is the offense they want to be able to run and now Jaylen gets to actually experience what it's like having this be the foundation of the offense. Yeah, it's um and we'll we'll get into like the football specific aspect of things and honestly pairing that with your takeaways from watching practice yesterday, watching the OTAA in the bubble. Uh listening to Jaylen talk about it again paired with Nick Serriani talking about like the the blending of things and what their basic approach is and that's mirrored a lot of things that Nick has said in the past.

[00:07:10]So that's why it's not just like listening to Shawn Manion last week and listening to Nick Seriani yesterday.

[00:07:15]It's to me it's listening to all three of them.

[00:07:18]>> I I'm I'm very I'm excited. I >> feel pretty good.

[00:07:20]>> Yeah. I feel pretty good about what this is gonna look like.

[00:07:22]>> So, here's what he said about under center.

[00:07:24]>> Yeah.

[00:07:24]>> He said, "I think you can throw anyone under center."

[00:07:28]>> I think the question you ask is why. Why are you doing what you're doing? What are you doing? What are you complimenting? What's your MO behind what you do what why you do what you do?

[00:07:38]>> He says, "And so philosophically, it's different than what we've done in the past. I think generally speaking, In the action game, you're influencing different players, running different play action schemes, whether it's a pull scheme or a gap scheme or an inside zone, outside zone, >> all of this stuff. Dot dot dot dot dot.

[00:07:55]Everything is connected from a timing standpoint.

[00:07:58]>> And he brings that in with uh it sort of mirrors the way that Nickriani messages things with the team, how you're 111th and everybody needs to be pulling in the same direction. That is part of the way that the offense is designed.

[00:08:10]Everybody's got to be on the same page.

[00:08:12]He also talked later about how in the past they've probably overindexed on searching for matchups, finding one-on-one matchups as opposed to scheming guys open.

[00:08:23]>> Yep.

[00:08:24]>> And obviously from the outside looking in, we can say, well, why not why not be able to do both? Just because you've got AJ Brown and Dvonte Smith doesn't mean you can't also scheme them open. You could understand how maybe there's like a well, if you've got those guys, maybe your time could be better spent doing something else, but now they're going to be forced to try to get guys open. But uh I I think much much more so even then when Kell Moore came in and it was like okay is this really going to be a new offense?

[00:08:49]Is what's going to be Nick? I think it is very clear that this is going to be a much different offense. Uh there was a lot there that you just said like to to me listening to Jaylen talk through the let's talk through the the matchup part of it first. Yeah. Uh and he said like you know we we wanted to we were hunting up matchups. We wanted to and to me going back to our Monday like film review like the screen grabs the the screen grab episodes we would do on Mondays >> and how often I would go to a drop back for Jaylen Hartz and we say like okay he takes the snap this is dead this is dead this his eyes are here by the time he gets to the second his second read the timing of the play is all thrown off and we would talk about like the the footwork and where Jaylen is in his drop and how the routes aren't connected correctly that's exactly what Jaylen's talking about here is that uh you know the to me like now that your feet and it goes to what Manny was talking about last week your feet are tied to your eyes are tied to the route concepts and so now you get into like all right I'm working one to two to three to four to five and it's it's all kind of built sequentially and that was another thing that Jaylen said was like the sequencing of plays he mentioned separately uh the you know marry he was said very intentional about what he's doing marrying things together um there was a lot to like there uh I >> they still got to be able to execute You still have to be able to execute it all and like who knows like everyone's got a plan until you're punched in the face like all that stuff. Um >> that said like I for as >> if I had to grade like hey ABC like from what we're seeing so far what we're hearing so far it's got to be an A. Like you you have if you are an Eagles fan you have to you should be excited by what you're hearing right now.

[00:10:31]>> This is so silly. I know it is. You you know it doesn't mean anything so Polyiana but >> I mean I think you've got to feel pretty good. Yeah. I I to me like es if if you wanted it to look different, which I think most people wanted it to look different. Uh but also get the buyin from that. Yes. You know, not just to look different. Um >> you know, even Saquon is talking about how, >> you know, he's he's uh talking to Todd Gurley and reaching out to guys who have rushed more under center. He's going to be running more under center than he ever has before. Like >> all the signs that it's going to be different are there. But to me, the most encouraging thing is is how bought in Jaylen seems to be about it.

[00:11:09]>> Yeah, I I think that that is uh as important of a signal as we could have gotten in the month of May is that like Jaylen seems as bought in as as he possibly could be. Uh and if the marriage is working working well, yeah, I to me like I I I would be buying stock. H I'm hoping we're going to get like uh paparazzi shots of of Jaylen and Shawn Manion going to uh you know Barkley Prime together or whatever it is. Like let's get let's get Summer's it couple going.

[00:11:40]>> A lot of I I'm sure a lot of our viewers uh thought you were going a different direction there when it came to the the paparazzi and pictures of you know to to me. I think uh at the end of the day the the football aspect of things, >> one of the things that I was always so frustrated with with watching this pass game over is that again they they would make things so hard for Jaylen. And it's not that you can't do it. It's not that you can't play the game that way. It's just that so few teams do that now because it's it's it's needlessly hard.

[00:12:14]you don't need to play because there are other like tools that are built in that allow you to to be able to go through your progressions and because teams are defenses are too good now at disguising.

[00:12:24]So if you want to say like when if you're Jaylen Herz and he says, "Yeah, we we wanted to figure out like we were we're hunting up matchups." What he's basically saying is, "Hey, before the snap, I would come to the line of scrimmage and I would have an idea. I've got Dvonte running this one-on-one here.

[00:12:38]I've got AJ running this one-on-one there. based off my read of the coverage. If it's going to be single high, I want to play AJ. If it's going to be two high, I'm going to play Dvonte. But if the defense shows something different than what they actually play and I start my first read and I'm I can't go to AJ now. I want to get back to Dvonte. That play's dead because the timing is not matched up.

[00:12:57]That's essentially what he's saying. So now, like getting away from that, it's a a huge huge breath of fresh air. I'm I'm excited to see what that play out.

[00:13:06]I also liked the um uh he's been able to answer all of my questions >> because >> opening statement by the way. That was the first thing.

[00:13:14]>> He knows that's what's coming. He talks about it again uh in the other quote I read about asking the why.

[00:13:21]>> Um >> good for him.

[00:13:23]>> Hell yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.

[00:13:25]>> I mean I we've I've made this comparison before, but think about like any job that you do.

[00:13:30]>> Yep.

[00:13:30]>> If you've got a boss asking you to do something, >> you want to know the why. Yeah. Right.

[00:13:35]Don't just, you know, I'm not just a a pawn on a chess board. Tell me why.

[00:13:41]>> Yep.

[00:13:41]>> And he deserves that. He deserves to have that gravitas.

[00:13:43]>> I think so. And look, we I don't want to say we kind of want to speak for you. Uh I have been hard on Jaylen and the way that Jaylen has played. And I think that Jaylen would also be hard on the way that you know, he's the standard is the standard and all that. Um but again, like it it does work both ways. And so to to see it get off to this start seemingly based off these three press conferences that that we've alluded to.

[00:14:06]Um I think it's a really good sign.

[00:14:08]>> He said it's been exciting to learn a new brand of football.

[00:14:11]>> Yeah. A new a different philosophical approach. Um yeah I mean that's to me that speaks to what you were saying yesterday about like that was a lot of under center. It was a lot of motion and it's day one install and if they are if this is this is not the third week of training camp.

[00:14:26]Oh there's a lot of motion today. We're going to see a lot of motion this year.

[00:14:29]>> For them to be doing that level, that amount of it, and then hearing Saquon Barkley talk about it, hearing others talk about it. Um, >> it's going to be a new look offense.

[00:14:38]>> Yeah. I just, you think about Jaylen and why I think the perception of the way he's been painted in some ways is unfair of a guy who is resistant to chain.

[00:14:50]>> Everything we know about Jay, I mean, he is he is he is the son of a coach. He is an absolute football junkie. It's the only thing he cares about. you know, you watch him swing a a baseball bat or whatever. He doesn't know what he's doing. He's football is all he cares about. Uh he is Michael Jordan obsessed, right? Yeah. This is a guy who wants to push himself >> and wants to be one of the best of all time.

[00:15:12]>> Of course, he is curious about other offenses and learning more about football. And so, the idea that he would be resistant to change, >> I think, is wrong. It's that this is a guy who has strong opinions because he's so obsessed with football that he's he's sort of searching out pretenders and if you are if you are not going to help him get to that level whether you are a player or a coach then you're you're probably going to fall out of favor because he doesn't have time for that.

[00:15:43]>> Yeah. I think and it was I thought it was really interesting too. There was the uh he was asked just oh it's another year with a new OC and the new play and he was like look like I want to become an expert at the position. I want to continue to grow at the position. Uh that is hard to do when it's always changing, which like I get it. Put that in there.

[00:16:00]>> Sneak that in. Um but uh to your point, like this I he and we've always known that like that was one of the big things we heard about Jaylen like year one, year two, year three as a starter was that he's always going to find what is the area where the biggest area I need to improve and I and he was able to do that those first couple of years and and make those strides. And so, uh, I think the hope would be that, yeah, that >> the big thing is if this, let's say the, uh, even it doesn't even need to be the 99th percentile happens here and it's like, oh, this offense is, you know, top three in every major category. Even if they are like it's just a really good offense and not a great offense, >> chances are like Shawn Manny gets hired away. Um, but I think that's why you bring in Josh Gazard. That's why you bring in Gerard Johnson. You have these other guys that uh you would have belief that could step in and kind of keep the train moving.

[00:19:41]>> So, there was one aspect where he said, um, there was one line, there are components of what we've done that Shawn Manion loves.

[00:19:49]>> What do you, what do you think are the if you had to pick like one or two things that Shawn Manion loves that the Eagles have done in the past that he would want to marry into the system?

[00:19:57]>> I wasn't sure if I was to take that as like the players.

[00:20:01]>> Oh, interesting. I took it as some conceptually.

[00:20:03]>> Okay.

[00:20:04]>> My my gut is that >> just that just that one RPO slide route.

[00:20:07]Yeah, that's right. It is the RPO game.

[00:20:09]Yes, that is exactly right. Uh I think it would be some of like the the read game and the uh and the RPO game. Um >> you know, I think that a lot >> What is it? Wait a second. You could do four verts.

[00:20:22]>> I never thought about that.

[00:20:24]>> Well, that's what like um it goes back to like the identity thing we talked about yesterday. And when I think of like Shawn McVey or Kyle Shanahan, you know, people think of like, oh, the it's stupid outside zone.

[00:20:38]No, not necessarily, but it's like the uh oh, they think it's it's inside zone or it's outside zone, it's under center play action. It's not necessarily it's not that. It's about like put we want to consistently put stress on second level defenders and, you know, find open, you know, passing lanes in the middle of the field. Sometimes it's from 13 personnel, sometimes it's from empty, sometimes it's from this. you find different tools to be able to do what you want to do, but like that's like your core identity is like, hey, we will we are always going to find ways to put those guys in conflict and we are going to pray on those matchups and you know and try and find that guy. Um, and so to me that's why I thought all right because he actually said that too is like uh you know when you want to go under center um you know in the action game you're influencing different players and things that like he struck a lot of the right chords for me in this this press conference.

[00:21:26]>> How do you feel about the action game?

[00:21:27]game. I like I like >> Yeah, I like the action game. Yeah, I like that. Yeah.

[00:21:30]>> Get play out of here. That's work action. There's no play when it comes to Jaylen.

[00:21:35]>> I like that a lot. Um >> looked slimmer or is that That's pretty consistent this time of year.

[00:21:42]>> It didn't jump out to me, but I wasn't in the room.

[00:21:44]>> Yeah, fair.

[00:21:45]>> I'm going to keep an eye out.

[00:21:46]>> Okay. Yeah, I felt >> It is a little bit consistent. Yeah.

[00:21:48]>> Yeah. I feel I feel like this time of year.

[00:21:50]>> Okay.

[00:21:51]>> Um this was the other one. There was a time when Dvonte was the guy coming in. So he's had this was all post AJ Brown conversation. Um so there was a guy or there was a time when Dvonte was the guy coming in was viewed as the guy coming in. So obviously 2021 he's he's going to be the number one receiver. Uh and then obviously Mai and Wix and Dallas and the whole unit. I thought it was notable number one that Mai was front of mind.

[00:22:18]Wix was the veteran that was that was top of mind. And I not that that like Dallas is like fourth in pecking order but like all right like yeah he's going to lean on Dallas. Um, we know that that's been the book on Jaylen is like he's got he's got his guys little telling like all right like he didn't mention he didn't mention like Hollywood like it was to me like the fact that it was Mai and Wix that he mentioned those two receivers I thought was I thought that was notable little little takeaway.

[00:22:41]>> Yeah, it's if you would ask me to say which four he would say that would have been my guess. Sure. I mean he followed the money get paid but yeah >> um >> that he didn't that he didn't throw in like a Hollywood >> right?

[00:22:53]>> Yeah. That's all I got.

[00:22:55]>> Do you think that his target share will be more equally dispersed this year?

[00:23:02]>> Uh, yes. I don't think it'll be like what what like if you look at what Green Bay was, Green Bay was like very spread out.

[00:23:12]I don't think it'll be to that extreme.

[00:23:14]Um, but I don't think it will be as extreme as what it has been.

[00:23:18]>> Uh, here's what he said about AJ Brown.

[00:23:21]And I know that everybody, you know, we >> Yeah. spent a lot of time talking about AJ Brown. We're days away now from hopefully getting >> hopefully uh the end of this saga and the resolution and it remains bizarre that it has gotten to this point and just the uh >> you know the the the interpersonal relationship between the two of them for him to go from godfather to a child to not even invited to the wedding. Um, but he said there's a there's an if.

[00:23:49]Obviously, it's been a lingering thing, but nothing can replace all the greatness that we achieved together. And then the follow-up was about their relationship. We said nothing's changed since we last spoke at the end of last season. We're really good. I saw how beautiful the pictures came out of his wedding. I'm very happy for him and him and his wife and his family. It's a beautiful thing stepping into the covenant. So, I'm very excited and congratulatory for that. Uh, >> Lindsay, do you agree? It's a beautiful thing stepping into the covenant.

[00:24:20]>> Yeah. But I was going to ask um was he not was he definitely not invited or he just wasn't there?

[00:24:26]>> Like did anybody follow up on that when he said that? Like I would have been like that's a good question.

[00:24:30]>> I would have been like why weren't you there then? Like and if he was like I had a previous commitment. Okay, sure.

[00:24:35]Like you can't make every wedding.

[00:24:36]>> I feel like if he was invited he would have gone.

[00:24:40]>> I I could be wrong.

[00:24:41]>> I Yeah. I don't know. But then that would be so weird to act like, "Yeah, we're buddies." It's like you weren't invited to his wedding.

[00:24:47]>> Well, he didn't say they were buddies.

[00:24:49]>> He said we're the same as last year.

[00:24:51]>> I think he said he's he's saying like nothing changed basically since since he talked to reporters at the end of last season, >> right?

[00:24:57]>> But like they're on good terms, but yeah, they're not they're not best friends.

[00:25:00]>> But like you said, if you're like the Godfather, >> well, yeah, that's not the case anymore.

[00:25:04]>> It's not like you can like grow apart in like a couple years to not even like you throw them wedding.

[00:25:10]>> I mean, honestly, and it's sad. I think it's sad. Like I I said that back in the fall. Like it's it's a shame. It is. And And for it to play out >> publicly.

[00:25:18]>> Publicly. It's It's a shame.

[00:25:20]>> No. And like it could be like you do have times where you grow apart from people. Yeah.

[00:25:24]>> Like whatever. But >> seems like you did.

[00:25:27]>> Give us the name of a of a nasty friend falling down.

[00:25:31]Name >> of a couple. Um >> Wow. Their eyes rolled in the back of your head on that one.

[00:25:36]>> You know, went through high school and through college. Um, no. But I just feel like it's like unless you truly are like I hate that person. Like you could throw him the wedding invite if you're really like that's why I'm like he's not invited. I think he could have been invited and just didn't go.

[00:25:55]>> I think that would surprise >> which that would be a choice.

[00:25:58]>> I think there were I think there were enough I mean we don't know the all the whole invite. It felt like there were not a there weren't a ton of Eagles there, right? It didn't seem like there were a ton of guys there. So, I don't know that the invite list was super wide.

[00:26:11]>> I mean, there weren't there two in the way.

[00:26:13]>> Is Rogers were groomsmen, >> right? Right.

[00:26:15]>> Devonte was there.

[00:26:16]>> Was Dvonte definitely there?

Uh, and the reason why is, you know, you go to the early Shawn McVey teams with Todd Gurley there, like at the peak of his powers, uh, it was heavily like perimeter, like outside zone, like that was like the big thing. It was a lot of stretch zone, boot action with the quarterback moving the pocket. I did ask yesterday like when you talked about all the under center play action, were they straight dropbacks or was it move the pocket? Um, with that in mind, >> yesterday there was not a lot of move the pocket. Yeah, but if it's typically if you have a lot of outside zone, I shouldn't say it's always move the pocket, but because you you still get pent where it's it's a really deep drop back and they stay kind of in that uh you know in that boxing ring there. But uh you will get plenty of rollouts. So I >> I'm very interested especially because when I think of a lot of Saquon's best runs from 2024, a lot of them were like those those sweep plays. A lot of them were were the outside zone where like get him to the outside. Um, and he was asked yesterday, I thought it was interesting, like, oh, like, do you have to be more patient with the outside zone? He was like, no, like not really.

[00:29:14]When you have the a lot of those outside zone runs, or, you know, I should say that a lot of those perimeter runs, they're more well- definfined. It takes a little bit longer for them to develop because you got to get out there, your blocks got to get out there, but they're more defined because you're you're in more space. So, there's like there's a little bit less to read, >> fewer defenders in the area.

[00:29:31]>> Exactly. Right. So, um, >> that that excites me from a Saquon Barkley standpoint, uh, about what that could look like. But again, it's a different that's a that is a much different world than what we've seen from the run game in years past.

[00:29:42]>> And he talked about how the thing that he felt like he didn't have last season was the explosiveness, the big playability, you know, that's sort of take it or leave it, but but that was part of it. Um, and also just the fact that he, you know, physically >> was not quite the same.

[00:29:55]>> Yeah. He didn't want to like I think he he wanted >> blaming the Super Bowl, but he's like that. But boy, is that the case. Yeah.

[00:30:01]>> Yeah. He he I think he was careful to not put too much on it. um he came just short of saying that he was like pressing. I felt like I think I think he won like he was close to saying it and then didn't. Um I felt that was the case as the season went on last year. It wasn't I don't think necessarily early on, but as you know like week six, week seven, week eight, I think he was pressing a little bit. Um yeah, I thought uh I thought that I thought I thought that was illustrative. The move the pocket stuff is really interesting to me as well. And it it just it feels such an obvious answer for solving some of the things that maybe Jaylen has struggled with in the past.

[00:30:40]>> Which is like staying in the pocket.

[00:30:42]>> Yep. And and if part of that is because he's a little bit smaller and the lanes are a little bit less defined uh and you're deeper into the progression, it's harder for him to to to find where to throw the ball. Moving the pocket, you know, creating uh a place for him to throw from, defining it, but also making it so he's not just scrambling around and like having there be a place where he can get away from those lanes. it it seems like it makes too much sense >> when you when you move the pocket you are cutting the field in half for the quarterback where it's not a full field like all right I got to work from one to two like you know from 53 and a third from left to right there sideline to sideline uh now you are flooding the zone so it's like all right my I've got three reads on a play and it's all to the right side of the field and I'm moving that way and if it's if my first read there my second my third read might be I'm running right like and kind of and building that in.

[00:31:39]>> Yeah, I think it does solve a lot of a lot of the issues that we talked about because now it's not he's running very late in the down.

[00:31:45]>> He's running a little bit more by design a little bit earlier in the down. Um, I was thinking about this driving in like you know Dis would throw the stat out about like the how many dropbacks didn't result in a throw and like how Jaylen was like so far like to me listening to the last the listening to these press conferences the last week >> like yeah I would expect that number to drop severely this year just based on like I'm I'm excited by this. Um >> yeah I I think it's really really good.

[00:32:37]>> Jordan Davis first name out of his mind.

[00:32:38]And I do think it's notable because the team is very intentional about when you have a day like yesterday where it's like first day of OTAAS like all right who we rolling out. The fact that Jordan Davis is one of those three players, four players include Jaylen, I think is notable. Um, you know, so I think that's a good sign for how they view Jordan Davis and his role in the locker room.

[00:32:55]Um, I enjoyed the Jiad Campbell, uh, anecdote on like the note-taking. Um, >> what did he say? So, uh, Zack Bond was asking, you know, just about like Jiad Campbell, you know, coming along. Like this is his first full off season and he said, "Yeah, you know, we're in there for day one of install and and, uh, we meet as a as a unit and, uh, Vic Fangio's going through and he's doing the install and I see Jiad and he's and he's sitting in his chair and he's he's taking all these notes and it's like he's writing in his notepad and it's just all chicken scratch and it's, you know, so I said, so afterwards we break off into individual meetings. That's a basically when you have training camp, spring ball, uh you know, OTAAS, mini camps, you start as a as a defense and then all right, linebackers are going to go off into the linebacker room, DB's going to the DB room. So, they go into the linebacker room and Zack Zack Bond says to Jiad, he says, "Let me see your notes." And he's looking, he's like, you could see that he was kind of like it was it was a lot that he's trying to write down said, "We got to get you upstairs with Patrick who that's Patrick Dolan, the uh the the I forget the exact title. He's probably like VP of uh like video operations uh or technology for the Eagles." um who's great at his job said, "We get we got to get you an iPad.

[00:33:58]We got to make this note-taking process pro process easy for I thought that was a fun anecdote for a young player who's still again, this is his first >> like time going through this uh as a as an Eagle."

[00:36:36]>> Learned after the show that it has been kind of a daily rotation with McKe and Dalton. So, it's it's a it's an open competition.

[00:36:45]>> Yeah.

[00:36:45]>> Still notable. I don't think we expected Tanner's a two, Dalton's a three, but I do think it makes sense.

[00:36:54]And I'm I think it makes sense for for all four parties involved. Okay. For all for all not parties, but the all four possibilities.

[00:37:03]>> Number one, it's it's a it's the it's the fair thing to do to Andy Dalton, >> right?

[00:37:07]>> He's here. He was a backup. You want to give him a chance to compete. I think that's fair. It's a bone you can throw him.

[00:37:19]The threes still get reps because, god forbid, you have a veteran uh third string quarterback who is still upset about like his role down the depth chart uh and then goes into the media later and then just like craps on that team moving forward, you know, for all eternity for the rest of his career because you don't want that to happen.

[00:37:36]>> Someone whose um name is a full sentence.

[00:37:40]>> Correct.

[00:37:44]Uh, so the Dalton the Dalton part of it is easy. You check the box, you let him know.

[00:37:47]>> That's right. Okay, I'm I'm with you there.

[00:37:50]>> I think it is a good thing for Tanner McKe just for Tanner McKe's uh preparation because the likelihood is whenever he goes somewhere, he's going to have to compete to be the starter.

[00:38:06]>> I don't think anybody's going to trade or sign Tanner McKe and be like, "You are the guy." Right. So he he has not done this before, been in a a competition for a job. He's just sort of been been the number three and then he impresses as the number three and they move on from Mchu and they let him be the two.

[00:38:24]>> Having the reps of what it's like to actually go through a quarterback competition, >> okay, >> I think is good practice for him.

[00:38:30]>> All right.

[00:38:30]>> And good preparation for him.

[00:38:32]>> This is more copium than the first one.

[00:38:33]>> That's more copium. That I think that is good for him.

[00:38:36]>> Right.

[00:38:37]>> Okay.

[00:38:38]the possibility, the inevitability of, okay, this is uh they're prepping to trade Tanner McKe. You might think, well, you know, you're killing his value if he has to compete with Danny Dalton. But I think it's it's actually a nice signal to be like, well, no, we're not we're not just holding him as the two and Dton as a three. Everybody knows around the league that Andy Dalton is a is a capable backup quarterback. Yeah, >> we had them compete. Tanner beat him out. He's the number like I think early in camp it will become clear the tener is the two. Okay, you tell everybody you know he won that competition. It's pretty clear. So he's he's cleared this bar.

[00:39:14]>> That's a little bit less of a thing.

[00:39:17]>> And then the really wildcard scenario which is the least likely scenario.

[00:39:22]>> Okay. But the the the potential outcome where the season goes badly, the Eagles want to move on from Jaylen Herz and they consider or whether or not they want Tanner to be the quarterback, which I think is very unlikely. I think if they were to ever move on from Jaylen would be because they're trying to land a different caliber of player.

[00:39:41]>> Yeah.

[00:39:42]>> Uh but the possibility of Tanner, >> it's like the it's a little bit tied into the preparation of going through a quarterback competition.

[00:39:49]>> You want to know, does this guy have any dog in him? you know, he we don't know.

[00:39:53]We haven't seen him compete yet.

[00:39:54]>> Yeah.

[00:39:55]>> So, like, how does he handle competing with Andy Dalton? Is he Is he grabbing, you know, the brass ring here and being, you know, not messing around?

[00:40:04]>> I'm the I'm the dog here. You got You want to see if he if he has that? I like that. I think I like that more than the first uh like your sec the second of the four possibilities, which is But the way the other way I >> Let's evaluate Let's evaluate what this guy's like when he has to compete.

[00:40:20]>> Sure. I I think we talked about it yesterday too. I kind of wondered is it a thing of hey we we think there's a decent chance we could move on from one of these two guys in the summer >> uh with Cole Payton being our three.

[00:40:35]>> Yeah.

[00:40:36]>> So if that's the case, we want both guys to get without knowing which one is going to be the two. Let's make sure we get both guys reps in that role so that they're ready for, you know, not that you don't think Andy Daltton will be ready, but good to get those get those reps with all of those players uh just in case.

[00:40:52]>> Yeah, I think back it probably it we maybe should have expected there to be some level of competition, but I would be very surprised if if this lasts until August, >> I think.

[00:41:08]>> I think that's right. Yeah, I would be shocked by that, too.

[00:41:11]>> Uh, and I also just I just think that Tanner McKe's a better quarterback right now.

[00:41:19]>> Maybe.

[00:41:20]>> Maybe.

[00:42:14]That was for a chunk of the offseason that that was kind of like the belief.

[00:42:17]And then when you throw Cole Payton, it's like, oh, now you got four.

[00:42:20]>> Maybe Cole Peyton needs to enter the competition.

[00:42:22]>> That's your boy. Yeah, >> it was a beautiful throw. It did. It It looked a little bit too hard for him to get it there, but >> Okay. He had to work hard to get there.

[00:42:31]That's the thing is that like he was build is >> and it's not that he has bad tool bad physical tools but I think he was build is like oh man like this guy is >> he's got a fine arm strength it's fine.

[00:56:02]Um, so I basically how I did it, okay, was like I put like I had like longevity numbers first where it's like all right like number of games play uh started, seasons acred, playoff starts and then I also put like percentage of starts in their career in Philadelphia like how much of their career was in Philadelphia having that knowledge then it's like all right total all pros bowls Super Bowl appearances and wins NFC play like conference Player of the month awards, player of the week awards.

[00:56:35]Actually relative I was a lot easier to find that stuff than I thought it would be. Um >> for the guys at the top top.

[00:56:42]>> Like did you make the all decade team in the 2000s or the 2010s because that's a that's a big thing of honestly like future like Hall of Fame candidacy. Um >> and then you get into like the emotional stuff.

[00:56:52]>> Where it's like >> signature moments like one of the things that carries the OBG is like the the sack the strip sack of Tom Brady. Um, you know, and you know, certain players have more of those moments than others.

[00:57:09]>> Played your whole career. 100. Yep. 100% of the of starts. And then also like how did things end, >> right?

[00:57:14]>> Uh, I think that's something that uh >> and at the very top like a Kelsey conversation. Yeah.

[00:57:22]>> I think you can make a really good case that Jason Kelsey should be number one on the list.

[00:57:26]>> Absolutely. So, I think you make a great case for it.
