Weather patterns, such as the omega block that creates a trough in the jet stream, tend to persist for extended periods, keeping certain regions (like the Maritime provinces) in cooler conditions while other areas (like western Canada) experience extreme heat; these patterns typically break down over several days, allowing temperatures to moderate and weather conditions to change.

Looking to June to break the chilly weatherAdded:
There's Baddeck right now. It says that it's showers and 4°.
>> Mhm.
>> A couple of degrees cooler, Kalin.
No showers.
>> [laughter] >> It could be snow.
>> I mean, I'm hesitant to even bring this up. Um but it is possible that there could be a couple snowflakes that mix in with the rain up in the Cape Breton Highlands.
>> Is that right?
>> Yeah, that's right. Uh tonight and tomorrow because that's how cold the air that's pooled above us right now is. We were talking about that blocking pattern a little bit earlier, that omega block.
And the thing is, once that gets set up, it tends to stick around for a while.
>> Okay, so send your If you live in that part of the province, send your hate mail to Kalin Mitchell.
>> Sure.
>> Here of CTV Atlantic.
Not afraid to put my email out there. Um hey, let's let's talk about when this pattern's going to change though, when it's going to shift a little bit for us.
So, here's a little bit of an outlook I put through. We can see that big ridge of heat that's building up through the west. Uh again, they have both yellow and orange heat warnings in effect for parts of western Canada and they've had record-setting high temperatures the past couple of days. I'm sure today is going to be very much the same. And then off in the east and around Atlantic Canada, well, we're in that dip. We're in that trough trough of the jet stream.
They got that very chilly air that's sitting above us. So, this pattern, it's going to linger through the end of this week and into the upcoming weekend.
Still some heat in the prairies, so it's going to begin to break for the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan moving through the weekend remaining very hot though in Manitoba through the weekend into the start of next week, whereas our temperatures here in the Maritimes as of Saturday are still going to be held cooler through the weekend.
And into Monday and Tuesday of next week, some recovery for the province of New Brunswick beginning on Monday, but temperatures will come down with a chance of showers on Tuesday. It's after Tuesday of next week when temperatures look like they'll really start to climb for the Maritime region that pattern breaking down and headed up as we head towards Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
So, there is some change in the horizon.
It's a few days away yet, but it is in that long-range forecast. Now, taking a look at what's going on for weather for tonight, there's going to be a lot of cloud cover around the Maritimes. In most cases, chance of some catchy drizzle and fog tonight, but still some rain expected Prince Edward Island and around northern eastern areas of Nova Scotia. And there you can see on the timeline a little blues showing up and around the Cape Breton Highlands. It's that chance of few snowflakes mixing in with the rain and that continues into Friday morning.
In the forecast for Friday is some for the periods of rain expected for Cape Breton around the north shore of Nova Scotia and for eastern parts of Prince Edward Island, Charlottetown and east and the remainder of the Maritimes, mostly cloudy with a low chance of a shower or a little bit of patchy drizzle. If there are going to be some peaks of sunshine for tomorrow, the best chance of that is going to be in western areas of New Brunswick and the southwest of Nova Scotia. Now, winds for tonight and for Friday remain out of the north and northeast for the Maritimes. And they're still going to be gusty for both tonight and for tomorrow. Tonight's wind gusts will be in the range of 20 to 40 km/h.
Tomorrow's wind gusts in the province of New Brunswick, 20 to 40, but for both Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, some of the peak wind gusts come up between 30 and 50 km/h.
Northeast wind direction tends to be a cooler one for us and so we have some cool to chilly temperatures in the forecast. For the low temperatures for tonight, most of the Maritimes will fall down to around the low to mid single digits. And then here's look at the high temperatures for tomorrow. In the north of New Brunswick, mostly between 10 and 13°. So, in around the coastline, towards the east, some high temperatures between 8 and 10. 14 for Fredericton for tomorrow, 13 for Saint John, 15° for Grand Manan, and then for Moncton in the southeast, it's cooler. High temperatures near 9°. Prince Edward Island for tomorrow with high temperatures between 6 and 8. For eastern areas of Nova Scotia, very similar to today, so it's going to be chilly with high temperatures between 4 and 7. Northern and central parts of the province for tomorrow with high temperatures between 7 and 10° and like today, if we're looking for temperatures that are, you know, [snorts] just a little bit above that and this is still cool for this time of the year. Uh there may be some low teens in the southwest.
Taking a look at the extended forecast for New Brunswick. So, again, cool through the upcoming weekend cloudy periods over Saturday and Sunday. Got that chance of showers on Monday and Tuesday of next week, but they get to temperatures rise in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. And again, that's when this weather pattern's expected to break down and things begin to moderate a bit. Not only that heat in the west, but also our chillier conditions here in the east. Taking a look at the 7-day planner for Nova Scotia. Cloudy periods to start the weekend and then on Sunday there's a chance of showers mostly for the east of the province including Cape Breton.
Cloudy periods on Monday and a chance of showers on Tuesday and then hopefully temperatures warm up Wednesday and Thursday of next week. And for Prince Edward Island the outlook, we have some patchy drizzle cloudy conditions on Saturday. Cloudy periods in the forecast for Sunday and for the start of next week followed by chance of showers on Tuesday and a mix of sun and cloud Wednesday and Thursday.
>> Todd.
>> We are hopeful for the beginning of June.
>> That's right.
>> Thank you.
