Whitchurch Canal Breach Update, Excavation Down Into The Breach Begins!Ajouté :
Hello everyone. We're back down at the brereech again today and as you can tell it is a nice busy morning which is certainly how we like it. So the excavators just moved over here and they've just started digging right next to the laser level actually. Um so we have been seeing just to give you an idea as well the now famous timelapse camera is just over to the right there.
So he is right in the center of the brereech doing this work. And uh yeah exciting day to be down here. So, I'll go give you an overview of everything that's currently going on. Sorry about the uh the lawn mower in the background.
Hopefully, it isn't too loud for you, but it shouldn't be. The track dumper just down there doesn't actually look like anyone's in it at the moment. So, uh I think they know that this work might take a while as you can imagine.
seems to be the way though to be fair that uh he'll do a load of the digging work and then once the spoil is all freed up, they'll just uh well do it nice and quick where they'll get uh two or three track dumpers all working at the same time just to get it cleared up nice and quick. Now, real quick before we get into it, I'd imagine it'll be a a busy morning down here. I just want to say if you haven't subscribed already, really would appreciate if you uh if you did. bad time to I always lose my words when I go for that bit you know it's quite an important bit but either way really would appreciate it and of course it keeps you the guys updated on everything going on with these canal works now these are the days admittedly that I love the most down here they certainly are always fun to see the uh the big ground works I think that's what a lot of people enjoy watching as well as another boat is actually leaving the witch arm that's the third one this a bit of an exodus down here, but uh yeah, I'm guessing it's people going on little trips now.
Although, yes, um the stretch between the brereech and Langolan is uh pretty much closed off. Of course, there's no exit point from here. Um it's still a fair stretch and a lovely part of the world, so it's not all bad for those boats. Now, don't get me wrong, not ideal, but uh there's worse places to be stuck. There certainly is. Uh you'll see there as well, the large excavator on the uh the removal pile, shall we say, uh is once again ready to uh unload. And thankfully, I think it's it'll be nice and busy over there.
>> Dave just tried to sneak up on me and scare me. Now, that isn't on personally, so let's go and have a look. Sorry, I'm having a little too much fun down here today.
But, uh, I'll try and get you a view from over this way. And whilst we're over here, we will have a check.
Make sure I'm recording. I certainly am.
Uh, we will have a check on everything on this end as well.
So, Oh, see, that's one of the things with the drone flying as well. There was a little bird uh that looked like it was right next to my drone, but then I moved my drone and it's probably a good 100 meters away. So, yeah, it's easy to tell the ups and downs, but the depth is definitely the hardest part.
So, looks like we've uh made the comment about the uh the time-lapse camera being there, and maybe it's a bit silly to put it there cuz I assume that they'd be getting rid of all that banking. But, you can see there with the uh the lines they've sprayed. So, I'm guessing that is actually potentially the line they're going up to. But once again, it's a sandy material. I don't think it's as simple as just going up to that line and digging straight down. But you'll see there one of the uh the steps. Um, of course, these orange markers are the steps that we've been talking about a lot. Uh, with each one of those uh orange markers, then they will step down the depth that they need to go to.
There's a few of those across site.
It was quite easy on the uh on the walk around to see where exactly those locations were, but bit harder from the drone admittedly. But nice to see that uh we're starting to get a proper layout now. Now you'll see there with the uh the spray painted locations that that is right in the center of the brereech. So no doubt that'll be the uh the deepest part they've got to go to. That'll be the uh full 5 m that we heard about. So, like I say, interesting to uh to see that. And uh I'm just moving off now. So, I'll tell you what, since the uh excavator is quite far down at the minute, we'll go and get a look from this side, cuz that's probably the uh closest end to the flood field we've actually seen him in a fair while.
There you go.
I'll tell you what I can do. If I come a little further down this way and go by this tree, that'll be the best angle for us. Now, really quick, I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone that's been supporting on buy me a coffee and through Super Thanks. Really do appreciate it. But uh once again, there's not begging, you know, no one has to uh to donate. So, I just appreciate everyone that does. And of course, the link for that is in the description if you fancy like helping, but no worries if not. Like I say, now I'd imagine he's going to go up to the right hand side there and do the same thing further on. But this material uh isn't actually um you know, it didn't live here, through lack of a better term. Um all of this material that he's currently digging was added after the breach of course just to allow access uh for all the works that have gone on whether that be uh getting the excavators to the other side or even the uh the jet in lorry. Sorry I just got distracted there. But of course all that work uh just allowed all of this other work to actually happen. Of course they wouldn't have had the access that they've had uh without filling all this in.
Where is he off to now? I don't know if he's going to change bucket. That's usually what he does if he changes bucket.
Oh, we're getting good at this. We certainly are getting good at this. So, I wonder if he's uh going to grab the not the grading bucket, the other one.
Uh Dave is behind me, but he is talking.
So, I'll have to ask him about that later on.
Oh, he's going for the trenching bucket.
That is not the uh the one I was expecting in all honesty, but could be quite exciting though. Now, we'll wait and see what's going to go on with that. And really quick, whilst we do, we'll have another another look over here. Now, of course, we've only had uh one spoil pile uh pickup so far, so uh certainly not as busy as the other day.
Trying to pick up the other bucket as well. Oh, I wonder if they're just getting rid of these.
I would guess that would be the case. uh possibly in readiness for uh either not being able to access them as easily with this work that's going to go on or uh yeah, no, I'll be pretty confident in saying that actually.
So, I'll tell you what, I'll uh I'll let them crack on and then uh when they start the digging works again, I will bring you right back. So, I hadn't actually noticed this, but uh they've moved a load of the personnel fencing over here. I was a bit uh well, not confused as I didn't really pay attention to it, but of course, that's the uh new location they're going to use um to store the buckets. So, I've seen that move around site quite a few times, but uh I think that tells me once again that we're probably correct in assuming that that will no longer be used over here. So, no doubt that uh that fencing will be moved shortly, very shortly.
Fair play. Uh but yeah, so cool to see that and uh certainly a sign of some good work to come.
Now picking up the same bucket once again.
Nice and easy. Now Dave's back. How are we Dave?
>> Not too bad yourself?
>> Yeah, not too bad. Thank you.
>> Anything interesting?
>> Uh a bit of digging. Well, well, a lot of digging.
>> So, they're doing that back wall at the minute, but they've just moved the uh the bucket bucket bucket storage location.
>> Oh, that's interesting.
>> To uh to there, as you can tell.
>> Yeah.
>> Is that you beeping?
>> Oh, it is. Yeah. I thought it was you.
>> Not me. Not me. But, uh you had a good morning.
>> Yeah, busy.
>> Busy morning.
>> It was busy.
>> How's the shed? Uh, the shed's the same, but I've just been buying a bit more steel for the shed.
>> That's exciting.
>> How much that cost you?
>> Fortune.
>> Nearly 500.
>> Now, the work has started right back up.
So, I'll go and have a closer look. Now, it has been a while. Now, I've neglected to do this for a while, which is quite sad in a way because I certainly do enjoy uh knowing where everyone's from.
and it has been a couple weeks. So, I do apologize about that. But do feel free to drop a comment where you're watching these from. Now, don't get me wrong, not too specific. Certainly don't want your address or anything, but uh I always find it so interesting when uh people are watching uh from across the UK or you know, if you're local, then uh do feel free to tell me. And uh of course if you're an international viewer as well then uh do drop a comment and uh I'll certainly be interested in knowing.
So thank you very much if you uh do leave a comment as well. Really do appreciate it. So we'll have a look. Now he's going right up to that uh spray painted line that we saw. So uh yeah, cool to see that they in that. Now I didn't actually see them do the spray painting which is odd.
Well, just noticed this in the background.
They've put the laser level onto another ruler.
You see there that he's just measuring that out actually. So, uh yeah, cool.
And uh I think that's probably going to show once again that they are going to a much deeper depth now, which is uh what what we're here to see. No doubt. So, uh yeah, this awesome groundwork is uh I don't know. It It's just really satisfying to me. It really is. And uh it's certainly always fun to film. So, tell you what, would be a nice angle from over there, but I don't know how well I'll be able to film it. But give us a second and I'll try and get you a nice view from the other side. So, let's go and give that a go. Now, real quick, I'll have to uh get quite far back here just so I don't film everyone. Um, obviously I try and be as respectful as I possibly can be. I do apologize if this video is all about the place with everything going on, but I'll try and zoom in nice and quick just so I don't get everyone else. But once again, hey, there's me.
And once again, once again, thank you everyone that uh does wave back. So, let's go and get an angle from over here.
So, if we just take our time, typically he's just moving off, but uh that shouldn't be too much of an issue with the shot I'm trying to get, unless it keeps going, in which case that will be annoying. Uh but if we go right about here over the sump pump, just the sump sun comes out.
There we go. So, I'll try and get as low as I can without losing line of sight, of course.
So, if I go nice and low here, I'll have to go a little more forward, otherwise I will be behind the trees.
But right about there, I can get nice and low.
That's the shot I was after. So, that is definitely a sight. And uh once again, I feel like from this side as well, it just gives you a better idea of uh how it sloohoos off to the left hand side, it's uh yeah, still a fair angle that they've uh got to work with. So, no doubt they'll get that all flattened out in no time with this work going on. And uh yeah, it'll be impressive to see it all finished. It really will. Now I can hear the uh the track dumpers are coming in the background. So I think that's tells us everything we need to know whether there's enough uh that's been dug out now to allow that removal to start. But I don't think that's going to stop the excavator from doing little bits of work in the background either.
So we'll go and have a quick look see how many track dumpers are being put on the job.
just the one at the minute, but I'm sure that will increase.
Now, the one bonus is we haven't seen that uh the track dumpers needed a repair yet. It seemed to be that uh it was getting repaired every other day at one point, but not the case anymore. You can see there certainly do have a line of sight.
Little thumbs up there. Not a proper hey there as me, but uh hey, we've just done that, so we don't need to.
Oh, dropping it off a load of fencing as well at the same time. There's me thinking that was for the uh for the excavator.
There we go.
Now, once again, the uh the drone does tend to flatten things off a fair bit, but hopefully that gives you an idea of just how deep they've already gone. So, there was me thinking it was only about a foot or so uh that they dug so far, but certainly not the case. They are really uh really getting down into the depth of it now.
Now, I'll try and get a shot from the other side as well, just cuz I do quite like filming uh from the sides. Oh, I'll tell you what, we haven't filmed from this side in a little while from above the culvert.
And uh it's a surprisingly good line of sight from over here as well. You can see me once again in the background there.
Now, don't get me wrong, it would be um easy in a way for me not to show where I am. Um but I don't know. I find it kind of a nice fun challenge in a way. Get line of sight whilst maintaining all this filming. It's uh certainly a bit of fun. It's annoying, but I mean it is it is a challenge and we all like that. You see there the uh the time-lapse camera.
So maybe I was being a bit too harsh on the uh timelapse camera placement if they are keeping that for a fair while.
And I did have a lot of questions thinking that would just be removed in the next week or so, but I don't think that'll be the case. I'd love that footage as well. If Canal River Trust can sort that footage out for me at the end, then uh I'd be greatly appreciative. I really would, but I doubt it. But that would be nice either way.
So, looks like Well, they're not really I suppose it's pointless getting it flat at the minute cuz it's all angled to the left. So, if they get this area flat, then it would uh just be annoying for accessing the other parts. But yeah, they'll make do either way. They'll uh they'll figure it out.
Once again, they can see how sanding that material is. It is such a an unusual material. Uh that mix between sand and clay. And sometimes it looks exactly like clay and sometimes it looks exactly like sand. It is a strange one.
I won't go too close here, of course, for obvious reasons, but I do want to just get a bit of an angle from uh the back side of this bucket.
Now, it's not that same uh clay sand mixture in this area that we have been used to seeing, but I think the reason for that is just because obviously this material uh wasn't actually breach material. Uh this was well they got it from a few locations to be fair but uh all this uh spoil in front of us um was filled back in of course after the actual breach itself. So uh that'll be why it looks a bit different but also why there's fair few more rocks and things in it. Uh there's more sticks and all sorts.
So where's he off to now?
I'd imagine it won't be too long until we see the uh track dumpers make their way in just because well there's a fair amount of spoil there that needs removing at this point. Oh, and would you believe it, the little excavator is here as well. So, I'll tell you what, we'll get you turned around nice and slow.
Move back a bit.
So yeah, both excavators, well I say both. Uh two of the three excavators back into the brereech now. So a really really busy day down here.
Now I do wonder if I can get nice and low here.
Adittly that tree is in the way a bit, but uh we'll make do right about here.
But uh I'm guessing they're going to fence line a load of the way down now.
Now they won't be able to go too far in front of the laser level. I wonder I can't imagine that would work nearly as effectively if there's a fence in front of it, but maybe it wouldn't make a difference. Maybe it would. If you guys know that, then uh do feel free to uh drop a comment.
Well, that's interesting. 2.2 m. There we go.
So, one of the bonuses of coming down and saying hello is that uh there is a chance you'll get a Hey, there's me. So, hey, even Dave's getting involved. All right, everyone ready? Hey, there's me.
Right, appreciate it, guys. Enjoy yourselves.
>> Take care.
>> So, I've just seen this and thought that I would have to get up nice and quick.
So, they've just started digging out even more of this area, but it's unusual. they uh the stuff they've just dug out. Um they haven't taken it off.
He's just tampering it down into the actual brereech itself. So I've no idea what's going on. Now, of course, all this will have to be dug out again. So, uh yeah, it's bizarre. Very bizarre.
You'll see there as well, he does get quite the speed on when he goes downhill like that, but it almost looks like he's dug that bit out to get this bit level.
So whether they're I don't know. It seems a bit odd that they're going to get all of this to that uh that same level when to our knowledge at least all of this is going to uh have to be dug out again anyway. So I found it. Not only did I find it, but you can also see one of the parachutes coming down there.
So that is satisfying. And uh that is a two for two. wanted to get the uh the parachuters as well. So, uh yeah, that is a right treat. And you'll see there the plane coming into land. Now, as you can tell, that is a very far way away, which is why I haven't been able to uh capture this so far. I didn't realize just how far away that was, but you see there, he's just touching down. And he is down. I'm actually uh going to take some photos there tomorrow. So, uh, if you're interested, I'll put some of them photos in a video next week or something. But, uh, yeah. Cool. And, uh, at least now I know which direction to look as well. Directly southeast of me there. So, uh, yeah, hopefully you enjoyed that bit of the video as well.
And, uh, like I say, now at least I know where to look.
Actually, not as far right as I thought it would be, but either way, back to the job at hand. So, I can see the excavator in person.
Stopped to move in for a second. The little one still around as well.
Although he hasn't been up to much admittedly, but uh yeah, almost looks like they are trying to uh saying that they wouldn't have dug it out on that far side if they were just going to fill it all back in. almost looks like they're doing this work just to uh well I honestly I really don't know. I really don't know. But uh thankfully it's never long until we find out.
Absolutely beautiful timing. Just the uh sun comes out. It is actually getting quite cold down here. Um yeah, the uh work fires back up again. So you'll see there that despite that work filling that in, there's still a bit of a a dip, but he's back to uh actually digging now. So, we'll go and have a look.
I'll have to go up a fair bit higher now just because the trees in the way of where they're digging at the moment, but we'll make the most of it. So, let's go and have a look.
So, he is well, don't really know whether they're just getting that down to the uh perfect level, but the guy with the uh I'll tell you what.
I'll I'll stop making guesses for a moment just to see how we get on. I was going to say whether they'll just get this all level.
Oh, no. That's a big hole. That is a big hole. I tell you what, we'll go and have a look.
So that is uh certainly more uh the work we've been waiting for in a way cuz that now admittedly the sun coming out has probably done us less of a favor there cuz you can't really tell how deep they're going into the ground there but that is certainly a fair depth.
Uh Dave's looking at me confused. What's going on Dave?
They did say 5 mters they were going to dig down, didn't they?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. But uh now riddle me this.
Actually, I've just noticed something.
>> So, you'll see, you know, they were on about the steps down at the orange markers. A >> lo and behold, that'll do it. So, that is interesting.
Um, now the uh the ground actually despite being the sand. Sorry, I'll stop talking over your video. Um, do you want me to do the commentary on yours? Um, but uh yeah, it's actually holding up well uh considering the sanding material, but you'll see there the perfect timing. He's just pulled out that uh that orange thing.
Hammer it in as well. There we go. So, yeah. I mean, great to see this work start up and uh I'm still a bit unsure why they did all that tampering down of the material they've just removed. But my guess would be it's going to be very busy on the track dumper action for the next couple hours then. But uh hey, won't get me complaining with that. I'll tell you that much. But uh either way, what a what a treat to be down here today. Now, I can already hear the uh other track dumpers on its way. So, we'll have a quick look. Oh, I thought so. Anyway, now I'm surprised they uh they haven't got all three track dumpers going, unless that that is the one that was having issues. So, maybe it uh it is having issues again.
But, uh that excavator looks comically small once again. But uh either way uh the pivoting of the track dumper coming in very useful once again. But uh yeah, I'm also just very glad that they have got the new track dumpers as well. As sad as it is that the old one's gone.
So I'm really hoping the uh depth of that hole is coming across on camera.
It's got to be a good three three foot I would say lower down that they've dug now. But either way, I'll let them crack on for a bit longer and uh bring you back when uh they crack on a bit more. So, I was just flying up to uh try and get a buzzard, but unfortunately he has flown off. But uh either way, it was quite well timed in that they've just started the digging once again. We'll go and have a look. So the sun is actually well it's helping and hindering at the same time. It's not showing the the depth of the hole at the best, but at the same time it's a good point where it's lighting up the machinery just right. So it does look good. But uh time's getting on now. But uh hey, that's not going to stop us.
It's uh a nice day to be down here. So I'll make the most of it and uh stay as late as my batteries will allow. Go on.
I thought Dave was going to say something then. So, we'll go and have a look. He's just gone down again. I'm guessing they uh keep having very short breaks just to check the work they're doing. And when I say short, I mean it's like 10 seconds, but uh it's not bad at all. But once again, something tells me that this is all going to be looking very different uh in the next 15 minutes. It's uh yeah, this is the work we're after. It certainly is. Now, I'll tell you what. We'll try and get I'll keep it at the three time zoom.
Try and get the best angle I can for a uh for a thumbnail.
But hopefully that uh once again if I get a bit lower, we'll uh show the depth of this hole that they are digging.
Very impressive.
So, we've got a buzzard coming back over us thankfully. And you can see there he's just hovering almost in the uh in the wind, which is awesome to see from a buzzard.
Don't get that too often. And uh certainly makes my life a lot easier for filming him. Now, might look close, but we are fully zoomed in once again. But uh yeah, water treats. Now, admittedly, they're not as exciting as red kites, but uh it's still nice to film, but he's getting a little too high for me there, unfortunately.
He's really high up, actually. So, I'm at the full well 118 m, but uh he's having no issues getting nice and high, which I'm not too surprised about with it being uh such a nice day. But days like today, I certainly wish I could go a little higher because that would be awesome. That certainly would be awesome. But either way, I'll uh come down now and uh see what's going on. So, let's see how they're getting on down here.
And since we're over here as well, it'll be rude not to get a shot from this end.
It might actually make the uh the hole they're digging a bit more obvious.
You see there with the shadow on the back wall. It certainly does uh just show show how deep they're going and and the size of it as well. It doesn't take them long to uh crack on. It really doesn't.
So, we'll get a nice zoomed in shot.
Once again, I'm guessing it's around 2 and 1 half to 3T that they're digging to at the minute.
It's gone really windy all of a sudden.
And of course, I'm always a bit nervous when the seagull's about. I've just seen one fly past me. So, uh, you know, we'll keep an eye on him.
So, whilst we're waiting for a track dumper to come over, we'll get into position.
It's going to be a fair old hole that they're digging here.
Especially if they're going down to 2.2 m, let me tell you.
I am guessing that is going to be the case though. You see how they're uh they made that big square um with the spray paint and then I'm guessing as they go more central that'll be the stepping down.
So if I move over here, I'm just going to make sure I'm not over the actual uh working area just so I know I'm safe from workers.
But we're all good right about there.
So, he goes in for another bite.
And I can tell you the uh the track dumpers are on their way again. So, I'll tell you what, whilst we're waiting for them, I'll let you go for a second and bring you right back. So, the track dumper is on his way back once again.
And uh yeah, I'm excited for every uh every load this time cuz uh yeah, it's such interesting work going on. Now, tell you what, I'll go down a little bit more just so we can get both of them in the shot and zoom out slightly whilst sticking on this camera. I have to say with this drone, I love the main camera, don't get me wrong, and I love the zoom capacity, but the the seven times camera isn't as sharp as the three times. But as an allrounder camera, the three times the middle one, that is my favorite. It certainly is. It's uh it is incredible.
Now, you can see here if I zoom in when it switches to the seven times, it is a brilliant camera, don't get me wrong, but it's not it's not pin sharp. Um, now, you know, zooming into 28 times digitally won't help that, but yeah, there's something about this three times. I just love it right there. like I don't know why. It's certainly a handy camera. Certainly is.
So, if anyone uh is looking to buy a drone, but the Mavic 3 Pro is too expensive, then uh I couldn't recommend the DJI Air3s. Uh I couldn't recommend that enough because it's got a very similar main camera to this one, which is the uh fully zoomed out. Looks great.
Uh but it's also got uh an equivalent three times camera on it like this one.
So uh yeah, best of both worlds if you're just lacking the uh the super reach of the uh seven times. Now that's the biggest bonus of the the new drone that Colins's got, the uh the Mavic 4 Pro is that the main camera and the three times are basically the same. A few differences, but nothing major, but the seven times on that is incredibly sharp. It really is. And uh that's the only reason I would ever uh consider getting one of those.
Although to be fair, a little out of my price range at the minute. But even then, it's got downsides. The uh the main camera, the one we're looking at now, is slightly more zoomed in. Um from base, it's probably around that rather than that. Um so yeah, I don't know. I like the the wide angle of the main camera on this, but at the same time, you know, zooming in on that and being able to look at every single detail would be very nice indeed. So, uh, yeah, it's, you know, there's always sacrifices to be made.
Now, once again, the seagull is about, so I'm just going to keep well clear of him.
Now have a double check over here and nothing going on. So we're all good and I'll bring you right back. Now he's back again. And I'm wondering if they're going to get it uh down to pretty much that level. So I'm guessing they're aiming for that 2.2 all across this square now. And uh yeah, it would make sense. Now I really don't think there's going to be any more work in the flood field for a while. I was thinking that maybe they'd get rid of that uh flooded corner, but like I've said a few times, I do believe it is a different land owner. Now, a few people have disagreed with me as to the reason or that being the reason to that, but I am pretty confident that would be the reason. I'm pretty confident. I do not know for sure. Uh but that would certainly be my guess. So, I'm assuming that'll be left now. uh and the access to the flood field on foot will be fine. Uh but actually for the machines maybe they'll uh care about that slightly less than they uh they have been doing but it's a a fair square there that they've got and uh I just wish the the sense of depth would come across now.
It's handy that that guy is there. Uh just giving an idea and he is quite a tall chap. So I'm guessing it's around 3 foot so far they have dug.
But still, you know, if they're going down to 5 m in um some areas, then there's a long way to go, don't get me wrong, but either way, happy to uh be able to film this today. Sorry, I thought I was going to sneeze then, so I stopped the video, but it didn't happen.
I hate it when that happens. But either way, we'll uh we'll make do. So, I'm guessing that he'll be happy with that. Yeah, there's the beep. And he's off at once again a blistering 6 mph.
Max speed. That is max speed. So, I doubt when he's uh loaded like that, especially going uphill in that area, he'll be reaching uh close to that. But, uh either way, it it's, you know, it's not too slow.
uh considering I haven't really noticed too much of a decrease in speed when it is fully loaded either. It seems like it's always going uh about that pretty much. Now, I've noticed with the track dumper and the excavator, they certainly do go a fair bit quicker.
You'll see there one of the seagulls looking for fish in the background as well. And if it's one of those uh blackheaded ones, they're very good.
They've been down the Witcher arm a few times and I always see them catch like little fish. So, uh, yeah, quite impressive. Now, certainly makes their life easier with all the fish being on the surface with it being so warm. Uh, there's absolutely loads of them down the canal at the minute. Um, so yeah, nice to see. Now, unfortunately, I am right at the bottom of my final battery, so I'll have to let you go here. But, uh, once again, thank you so much for watching. Really appreciate your time.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and uh I'll do my close-up video tomorrow. So, if you're interested in seeing the close-up shots around site, then that'll be posted tomorrow, like I say. But, hope you're all having a wonderful weekend. Uh enjoy yourselves and uh if you're not interested in the close-up shots, then I'll see everyone on Monday for a nice busy week down at the brereech once again. So, take care everyone. Appreciate your time.
