The UK is experiencing a crisis where the state enforces diversity norms that fundamentally conflict with free speech rights, as evidenced by cases where individuals face arrest for language, university suspension for political speech, and social ostracization for forming groups. According to Dr. Ben Jones of the Free Speech Union, this represents a spiritual crisis where the Western soul must 'embrace unlimited diversity' and 'dissolve itself in the common mass of humanity,' creating a fragmented landscape of rival societies. The core insight is that diversity and freedom of speech are fundamentally incompatible, as the UK government's Prevent program now flags literary figures like C.S. Lewis and Tolkien as potential extremism risks while treating concern about migration as a terrorist strategy.

The UK’s Terrifying Free Speech Collapse: Real Cases, a New Book, and Why Diversity Kills LibertyAdded:
Imagine you're living a totally normal life in the United Kingdom.
You've never been in trouble with the law.
One night, you're woken from your sleep by a loud banging at the door.
It's the police.
You're dragged from your home, thrown into a cage in the back of a police van, and taken to the police station, where you're held for many hours.
You have no phone, and no one will tell you why you are being held. Imagine you are a woman out enjoying a beloved hobby, horse riding.
Suddenly, two strange men appear while you're in an isolated area armed with screwdrivers and physically attack.
In a state of panic, while on the phone to the emergency services, you use a slang term in reference to one of your attackers.
The 999 operator sends police to save you from the attackers, but also reports you for the language you used.
The police come back, this time to charge you with a racially aggravated crime.
Imagine you are a young female student at one of the best universities in the world, where you were given a place after years of hard work at your studies.
You and some fellow women decide to start a union for women only.
The resulting social ostracization is so extreme that things like being spat on and called a fascist in the street becomes a normal occurrence.
Imagine you are a young man studying at a different university when you get into a minor minor verbal disagreement with a female student who takes offense at your political opinion on Israel in response to her taunting you about not wearing your Jewish hat even though you're not even Jewish, you respond with a taunt of your own calling her kaffiyeh a tea towel. You are then suspended by your university for 7 weeks. You are barred from campus and given 48 hours to vacate your student accommodation.
The local police department refers your case to the local prosecutors. My name is Jenny Holland and this is my channel saving culture from itself.
Think of it as a site for personal politics for the politically homeless.
A place where you can find a little bit of common sense to help you fight the woke cultural revolution.
And today, we're talking about life in the United Kingdom. All those things I just said are real things that happened to real people here in Great Britain.
They're all cases that came to the Free Speech Union, an organization whose mission it is to help people in the UK get out from under the massive legal, social, and psychological burden that comes when a person's right to speak freely is taken away by the state.
In the UK, the crisis of free speech and all the attendant rights that flow from it is so bad right now that it's difficult to actually believe it's happening even as it keeps happening. How can this be a nation that basically invented the concepts of rights and rule by consent.
The country that birthed the most versatile language of all, so effectively used by Shakespeare, the Bronte sisters, John Donne, and many, many others, is now cracking down on that very language.
How is it possible that the same country that bequeathed to the world the building blocks of the modern world and all its riches is now beset by petty, censorious snitches, ruled over by a cadre of DEI stricken fools, and power-hungry gray men. All of this was debated on Wednesday night by the Free Speech Union at at an event here in Belfast.
Free Speech Union was started a few years ago by a well-known conservative writer by the name of Toby Young in response to an increasingly dire climate around political and social issues. I appeared on a panel at the event.
The panel was discussing a forthcoming book by the FSU's director of case management, Dr. Ben Jones.
His book, Island of Strangers, which is coming out very soon, is a whistle-stop tour through what is fundamentally the spiritual crisis that this once-great nation is currently undergoing. Jones writes that the UK government's terrorism prevention program, called Prevent, now warns that C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Aldous Huxley could be red flags for right-wing extremism.
That same program was teaching millions of public sector workers that concern about mass migration is a terrorist strategy, that it is now par for the course for acts of sexual violence to be treated with extraordinary clemency, while perpetrators of speech crimes are terrorized. And, Jones writes, the UK state has begun to enforce Islamic blasphemy norms in order to maintain the peace. Jones' book goes beyond a mere litany of outrages done by woke bureaucrats turned tyrants.
He accurately diagnoses the root cause of the disease.
This is not a problem of mere disagreement, he makes clear.
It is the fundamental crisis of the Western soul. Quote, "To purify ourselves, we must embrace unlimited diversity.
We must cease to exist as a single historical category. We must atone and dissolve ourselves in the common mass of humanity, the global majority. We must be diverse.
And in so being, cease to exist." End quote. No longer, Jones makes clear, are we two sides of the same coin arguing over policies under a sort of shared moral umbrella. Quote, to quote Jones again, "We have a fragmented landscape of rival societies and belief groups, each with their own set of sacred ideas, and many with a willingness to impose these ideas on non-believers, and an ambition to capture the power of the state in order to do so.
In the case of Islam, we do not have anything so trivial even as a rival society, but nearly a fully fledged rival civilization. There is, he notes, a marked difference between a confident insurgent Islam, which, among its believers, enjoys an almost total continued adherence to its religious tenets from cradle to grave, versus the feeble native Christians.
Jones writes, quote, "White British parents today are the uncertain products of a confused culture that has gone through 60 or 70 years of radical social change, the upending of so of norms about sex, family and marriage, the decline of Christianity, and therefore are utterly unmoored. Case in point, Church of England retention is just 46% in adulthood. How are these contradictions currently being managed by the state?
By removing liberty, which is an attempt to suffocate the grim truth. Quote, "Authoritarianism is implicit in the management of diversity.
Its name is empire."
That's how modern Britain, Empire 2.0, is governed, end quote. One of the most resonant things he writes, for me anyway, is how sudden was the advent of this new woke religion.
He even marks the year, 2013, as he watched in real time as a, quote, "new cohort of angry North American postgraduates," end quote, arrived in the UK and transformed not just his university, but his entire society into what he calls ruthless engines of identity politics and division.
Does that sound familiar to any of you?
Please do let me know in the comments, because it's exactly what I witnessed in more minor form, but in exactly the same time period.
It was essentially a reverse ideological colonization.
And that first vanguard, the first pioneers, landed on shore around 2012-2013.
Jones writes, "Quotes, with astonishing rapidity, these pieties came to be mouthed by CEOs and university vice chancellors, army officers, and clergy. And if you defied them in your workplace, you would be sacked.
End of story. This new creed that he calls diversity-ism, which is the new state religion, has broken Britain.
And his conclusions are stark.
The UK has been brought to its knees by the clash between what he calls two radically different conceptions of rights, law, and how to organize society. For any liberals still in possession of their critical thinking capabilities, this book might shock, because it makes clear that two of the most dearly held beliefs of contemporary liberalism are mutually exclusive. And the implications of this are, shall we say, complex. I'm quoting again from the book. He writes, "You cannot have diversity and freedom of speech." Boom. There it is.
I cannot emphasize enough how important this blunt phrasing is. It might even be enough to wake the remaining centrists from their self-induced slumber.
On the other hand, probably not. There is some good news in here.
Though it does come weighed down with the inevitability of the dark days ahead, quote, "The sing The symbols of Englishness and Christianity are becoming a form of resistance identity. In a way, this is excellent news because it seems to me that the best way to ensure that a group of people rally around a shared identity, impose social cohesion, and produce lots of babies is to tell them they are oppressed.
It worked for the Irish, it worked for the Palestinians, so why not the English, too?"
Among the English, the demoralization that came from being told that your side, your heritage, is shameful, that demoralization is lifting.
In fact, it's hardening into something different.
Resolve. Resolve that we will not be made to feel bad for our culture by a group of deranged, perverse, self-loathing bureaucrats. In terms of how this applies to the United States, I think Great Britain is right now a very serious cautionary tale. Do not let the utopian progressives, the hard leftists, and the haunted liberals convince you that national pride is the same thing as fascism, or that it's racist to love your country.
If anything, the kind of mania that accompanied the hard right rise in 1930s Germany had way more in common with woke extremism of today.
And actually, a deep connection to your own cultural past is a shield against being carried away on a tide of revolutionary change. Thank you for watching, and thank you for saving culture with me. If this video made you think, I go much deeper on a whole range of topics over on Substack.
