High pressure ridges create intense heat waves by compressing sinking air, which warms rapidly and creates a 'ring of fire' effect; this phenomenon explains why record-breaking temperatures occur across regions like Utah when high pressure centers directly over the area, with temperatures reaching 90s°F and creating elevated fire risks and potential for isolated strong storms.

Record heat to gusty winds and isolated strong storms chances WednesdayAdded:
Sophie, thank you. Cedric, now to the weather. Yeah.
>> I walked outside with Canal 9 like around 10:00 and I kept thinking like this is only the beginning. Like it's only going to get hotter. Yes, yes. This is news better. Exactly. I'm Hey, but this is one of those days, let me tell you this. This is one of those days where, you know, you don't want to go out and probably grab a big steak and go outside and eat, you know, right? You might want to whip together some Have you ever had like a just a good old classic tomato sandwich?
>> Yes. We were just talking about planting tomatoes and now I'm like craving one.
Yes. We call that >> hook him up with one cuz he said he hasn't had one in like Okay. Well, they're describing it and it's a caprese.
That's stuffy fancy, I think.
>> Yeah. We just know it as We call it a tomato sandwich. When you pour That's what you have. Tomato sandwich. But it's good. Who says it's >> [laughter] >> so common? It is so common.
>> Yeah, for you, yeah. I was going to say tomato sandwich.
>> [laughter] >> Hey, let's take a look at what's going on outside. If you want to have your capri caprisun, what do you call it?
UH WHATEVER YOU CALL I DON'T know what you're saying. That's a [laughter] caprese. Whatever you call Whatever you want to call it out there, folks. Well, you're going to be able to do that with these temperatures. New record heat once again for us today. You know, we hit a record high yesterday in Salt Lake City.
We're going to do it again today.
But then we got to focus on something a little more serious as we get towards tomorrow. We're going to have a lot of things coming together at us here. We're going to have that potential of an elevated fire risk. We're going to have that potential of maybe seeing a couple of isolated strong storms.
And eventually, we hopefully will get to talk about some cooler temperatures returning back to the Beehive State. All right, let's dive into this forecast here as we get you here with the latest information on what's happening right now and you'll be able to see these temperatures. Oh, they are climbing, folks. Temperatures up into the upper 80s now. 87° in Ogden. That's interesting cuz it's 87° in St. George.
Get the idea. Not too far off. 92° now in Green River.
80° over towards Price. 86° in Delta.
We've got 82 in Wendover. 72° towards Cache Valley. So, here's our high pressure ridge. It's basically centered right over us here in the four corners area. This is why we were expecting the peak of the heat today because when you get that high pressure right on top of you, you get the maximum of that sinking air. And it compresses and heats up pretty quickly. So, you'll look at the weather map, all the clouds and the storm systems are going up and around us. And so, right underneath it here in the Intermountain West, under that high pressure ridge, yeah, it's heating up out there, folks. Johnny Cash used to talk about this. The ring of fire, right? Oh, yeah, you know, under that burning ring of fire. Well, that's kind of like what it is underneath this high pressure. The temperatures are going to be warming up out there for you. As we jump into the mid-80s here at lunchtime, we'll jump into the low 90s here along the Wasatch Front. By this afternoon, we'll be in the upper 80s as late as 8:00 this evening. And remember, the sun does not actually set until after 8:30 now in the evening time. So, yeah, that's why it's still going to be so warm along the Wasatch Front. St. George, temperatures getting ready to hit digit mark, I think, for the first time this season as we go throughout this afternoon. 8:00, we may drop below 100°. Yikes, it's going to be a toasty one, folks. Take a look at this triple digit heat here. Now, the core of this, as I mentioned, is going to be across Arizona, Southern California, but a spike of that heat makes it all the way up in the lower Washington County. So, as we zoom in, you can see Hurricane back over towards St. George, Santa Clara, over towards the Ivins area.
That's why I do think you have that chance of hitting 100° today. Otherwise, temperatures in the 90s across the rest of the state, it's still going to be pretty toasty, folks. You're going to have to go up in the mountains to get into the 80s and escape some of this core heat. Record heat today, wind becomes a factor tomorrow. Then eventually, we'll get some cool air by Thursday and to Friday. Let's talk about that wind. We've got high wind watches that have been issued here for portions of Box Elder and Tooele counties. Winds could gust up to 60 mph tomorrow there.
We've We've got a fire weather watch that's turned into a warning now for southwestern Utah. That goes in effect for noon time through 9:00 tomorrow. And then that chance of isolated storms I talked about primarily in the northern mountains, but anywhere across northern Utah could see an isolated storm tomorrow. The chance is not high, and we're not talking about rainfall being a big deal. We're really talking more about the lightning and the potential of some microburst winds up to 60 mph, particularly across northern Utah. So, we'll keep you updated if anything pops off with that. St. George, near 100 today.
Fire weather warning for your Wednesday, windy conditions, dry conditions, and then we're in the low 90s for the end of the week before another fire risk potentially with another system to our north over the weekend. The Wasatch Front, record highs today, fire risk for your Wednesday, isolated storm possible as well. Otherwise, we're cooler and drier for the weekend. Matt.
