Crested geckos are beginner-friendly reptiles that thrive at room temperature (70-79°F) without heat lamps, requiring only a small heat pad with a thermostat in cooler climates; they have a lifespan of 15-20+ years, can be distinguished by sex through egg-laying behavior, and should be fed a varied diet including fig and insect formulas with occasional treats like bee pollen, while being monitored every two weeks for proper weight maintenance.

I'm jamming. I'm going to try not to like sing because then there's going to be zero people in here. Love it. Love the popcorn. Oh, what is up, guys?
Kelsey says, "Ditto." Kelsey's like me.
The button must be broken. Hit it harder.
Uh, yes. This is so exciting, you guys.
All right, so um while we were waiting for some people to get in here. Oh, thank you. Um, I'm curious, guys.
Where's everybody from? Um, and I also want to know what pets you have.
Sing. Oh, yeah. No, we don't want to do that.
Uh, yeah. So, let's see. Ohio. I'm in Tennessee. I will start off. I have um Boston Terriers. I call them Boston Terrors. Um, they're gassy little black and white dogs, commonly mistaken for a Frenchie. Texas, West Virginia, Colorado. We have a dog. I love it.
Tennessee, I love it. Hey, Jazz.
Welcome. Welcome. Oh, got some Tennessee people. Colorado, Michigan. I love it.
All right. So, if you are um Ohio, Michigan. I saw that in here. I am going to be traveling to uh Tinley Park, um Illinois, right outside of Chicago June 26th, 7th, and 8th. There's a huge reptile show there. It's called the NRBC breeders convention at Tinley Park and it's a blast. So, I will be there. Um, I'm going to spend a lot of time at my booth, but I also am going to be out in the wild mingling around. So, if you guys are in that area, come by. Oh, Kayla, I know I missed you in Castle Rock. What's up, Knoxville? That's super close to me. I am in Northeast Tennessee.
Got Missouri, Louisiana, Pennsylvania. I love it. fish, snakes, tarantulas, and a great dane. That is a zoo. That's what I'm talking about. We've got a couple fish here as well. And lots of geckos. I have geckos everywhere in my den, and I love them all. Oh, it's fantastic. A herman tortoise. That's my favorite. Oh, how sweet. Oh, I love hearing your gar is doing good. You guys are so amazing.
So amazing. Look at all the critters and all over the United States. I love it.
That's fantastic. All right, let's see.
Looks like we're getting pretty close.
Okay, so if you guys are new here, I'm Brianna. Um, I am the face behind everything. Um, I've built my own website, which is it's okay. You know, I'm all ears for suggestion. You can always drop a comment um in my DMs or on the contact us page if you find a bug or if you're like, "Hey, this sucks. I hate it. I want to hear about it. Or you can just say nice things, too. Um, and I have traveled all over the world and I never really had a reptile until I got my first crusted gecko. And look at me.
So, if you're nervous, I was too. I actually said no for months. My husband was the one that begged for a gecko and I said no for a long time. I was not going to have a gecko. And I love the geckos now. I see so many people in here have reptiles. Crested geckos are very simple and I have spent a lot of time studying their behavior and learning about what makes them tick. Um, and they're just they're so cool. Thank you so much. You guys are so kind. Oh my gosh, there's so many people in here.
You guys are fantastic. A crusty started my collection. Yes. So now I have cahula geckos, iridales, gargoyle geckos, um, morning geckos.
Just had a a baby. I caught the baby. It hatched in the tank and I managed to catch it. Um, it was like super easy. I was fortunate. But, and then I have lies as well. So, that's very exciting. But my goal is to help people learn more about crested geckos. Welcome the questions. Welcome the husbandry mishaps so together we can learn. Obviously, you guys are here because we are doing a community giveaway. It's for a crested gecko and an entire starter kit. So, you're going to get the enclosure, um, food, food and water dish, and a gecko safe faux plant. What's up, Washington? I love it. Everybody's all over the place. It's so awesome. Mini dragons. Yes, they are like little mini dragons. Um, but it's it's really for people who love pets, love animals, and are just curious and want to learn more.
So, I was so blown away at all of the entries that we got. um you had to tag somebody or name somebody that was important to you and basically give thanks. And I spent all day long across Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, and um also my DMs cuz some people just sent me DMs, which was great. But I was all over. I was reading every single comment, trying to reply to every comment, and it tickled me so much. I was kind of having a rough day that morning and it was on my to-do list to go through and check in on all of our entries and it was it was amazing. It turned my entire day um up right side up. I don't know. It was just so fantastic. So, if you are ever feeling rough, just head on over to my Facebook page and read all those amazing comments because it's like it just makes you feel so good. So, um Oh, well, welcome, welcome, welcome. Thank you so much for the kind words, guys. You guys are so kind. It has been such a journey to start this over 5 years ago and just I've learned so much. I'm very chatty as you can tell and I talk to a lot of people. I've learned so much. My mentor has been keeping crusted geckos for 19 years and it's just it's been such an amazing and heartfelt journey with each and every one of you. Um I just I appreciate each and every one of you guys so much. You guys are why um we're here. This is this is the community that I want to help build and I'm so grateful that you guys are building it as well.
So tonight is not just going to be a giveaway. We are going to announce here soon. Um, we also are just going to have some gecko hangouts. So, if you have any questions that, you know, you're curious about, maybe as a firsttime keeper, maybe as a um thinking about becoming a crested gecko keeper, you can drop those in the chat. If I don't see it, just spam it a couple times. I'm totally cool with that. Um, oh, all the love. I see all the hearts. You guys are so sweet. I feel like I'm like the little happy cat face like um so Oh, you guys are so sweet. So, so yeah. So, this is fantastic. This is what we want to do. We want to grow. Um I want to make it easy for people to start and um learn and then, you know, you can really take off with the enclosures, the the morphs, the colors.
I have um Sunshine, the humongous. He's in a full bioactive enclosure and I just planted him some more plants and he's literally like a little squishallo Godzilla. He's so adorable. Um, let's see. Question. Quick question. Be pollen. Yes, bee pollen is good for crusted geckos. Make sure it's organic.
Don't use it every feeding as they can become addicted. It's like putting honey on everything you eat. Um, but if you have a picky eater, it's a nice little treat. As far as favorite food, the fig and insect from pangia has been very very popular. So popular that they are sold out until the end of June. But it's very important to rotate. Mine really like the apricot as well. But I mix it in with the red, which is the added protein bag, just to make sure that they're getting adequate amounts of protein for proper growth. Crested geckos. Do they need a heat lamp? Heat lamp is like the worst thing you can do for them if you need to add heat. a small heat pad on a thermostat. Have to have the thermostat. Um, that is going to be the safer alternative if you do live in a pretty chilly area. Um, so just keep that in mind. There is always a better way to supplement heat. Um, crescent geckos typically don't need heat if you are kind of set between 70 and 79°.
And lifespan, great question. Uh, 15 to 20 plus years. So, in captivity with the proper diet, we're still learning about um their diet, I believe. I know there's a lot of new food companies out there.
I'm a little hesitant to play guinea pig, but I have heard that there are some pretty awesome um different brands of food out there. So, by all means, learn, try out some different things, do some research.
So, let's see.
So yes, we did have a couple of questions um that were sent to me. I just wanted to touch base.
So um let's see difference between male and female. Females are going to lay eggs. Typically there's not a lot of personality difference between the two.
Females will lay eggs even if they haven't been introduced to a male. So, you just got to be mentally ready that there could magically be two eggs appear and that they need a little bit more calcium than the males need just to maintain their calcium levels.
I change my food out every um other day.
So, I leave it in there for 2 days and then I take it out and I give it fresh.
In the winter time, it dries out a little bit faster. So, I do make it a little bit more wet during the winter and drier months.
So, before we announce the winner, because I know you guys are getting ready. I love all the questions. We're going to go through and have a nice big question time here soon.
I want to show you just a few geckos um that people have been asking about. So, this is Brody. Look at him. He's such a little ham.
Also, um Eiffel 65 is playing. So, it's like making my brain do a lot of really weird things. If I'm talking in circles, I'm I'm hearing if I was blue, I'm blue. If I was green, I would die. And then on this side, I'm also trying to think.
Okay, Google. Skip. We got to We got to Oh, that was really tough for me. I just want to let you know. Okay, so this is Brody. His real name is Bromance. He's a lover and he is currently available.
Look at this color. young male.
Super sweet.
He's super sweet.
So, if you have not been to our website, you must check it out.
He's got these beautiful port holes.
That is what all of that white speckling is.
We call those port holes.
Now, some crusted geckos are sweet, some are calm, some are bold, colorful, curious, and some are hilarious. Brody here, he's just a fat boy.
He's the kind of gecko, and let's see if I can show you how chunky his little belly is. He's the See, look at the belly, guys. So, he loves to eat. That is his number one pastime activity. Most crested geckos like to sleep. Um, Brody likes to eat, so he commonly will be found snoozing next to his gecko diet, his gecko bowl, his little food bowl.
Um, and yeah, he's just he's a trip. He is growing so fast. So, be sure to check him out. I also wanted to show you a new release.
This one is called Fever Dream. And if you love bold, bright, almost glow-in-the-dark orange, this is for you. Feverdream is trying to escape.
Check out that really cool looking stripey tail.
Lots of color on this one. I don't know if this one is sexed yet, I think. Come here. Little sticky feet. I think yeah, this one is looking male, which would explain why he's a little nervous after I was holding Brody. But look at those orange eyelashes.
Are you seeing the color? It's beautiful.
So, this is a new release. We just added this one to the website. Now, we have had five geckos um get adopted this week. I'm so excited. We shipped out a couple this week that were ordered a couple weeks ago and then we had some new orders come in. So, you do not want to sleep because these are one and done.
Um, there's only one of each one, which is awesome because they're just so unique. So unique. So, of course, you guys may wonder, why are crested geckos so special? What makes them different than leopard geckos? Some of you guys can um definitely chime in on why you love your crusted gecko if you have one.
Also, um as far as u their care goes, typically room temperature. You'll see in the background I have fake plants, just a simple LED light strip and paper towel bottom. Now, these little guys that you see, these are all my females back here, and they each have a Tupperware in them. Those are for eggs.
I want to show you guys. Um I don't know if you can see her. Can you guys see this gecko in here? So, this gecko right here is guarding her eggs. She um loves to do that. But there are two pearly whites because she wasn't quite out of her egg box earlier and I took a little peek and so she's got to feel like they are good and secure or the single brain cell stops firing and they forget and then they get out of their egg box. So, um, just a little tip there. Just a little tip. But they don't make a lot of noise. I actually hang out down here a lot. Um, do a lot of work on my computer and it's not something that's distracting like my dogs. They need to use the bathroom. They're playing.
They're destroying my house. Um, squeaky toys, little pitter patters up and down whenever the mailman comes. So, it is kind of it is kind of crazy with the dogs. But the crested geckos, they're they're definitely on a different level of ease. No stinky water changes, nothing like that. Plus, the enclosures are going to ship with every gecko. Um, so you get to look forward to having your um entire starter kit. Let's see.
All right, I have a couple more. Oh my goodness. Okay, I just want to do a little like teaser.
Look at this baby.
Do you guys want to guess which gecko this is? She is on the website. That is my only hint. And we'll come back to her.
Um, so I'm curious, um, as far as pets go, like what is something that your pet does that you're actually grateful for?
I know we have a lot of cute pet lovers in here. Isn't she sweet? Oh, the little paw. She's like, "Hey guys, how are you?" Um, or even like, "What animal has made your life better?" That that probably would be a better question because I know that for me my dogs have always been like there to lick my tears away, right?
Um but my geckos have enabled me to understand a stress-free life. I have no idea how to better um explain it. I used to breed dogs and it was always very stressful.
um you know, a lot of unknown and they're just as complicated as humans.
Truthfully, warm-blooded animals are very complicated. And I got into crested geckos. I got my first crested gecko and I was just over the moon at how soft and how sweet. And it really made me feel stress free, you know, once I got the routine because routine is huge with these guys. Once I got the routine down, I was like, "Oh, this is a breeze." And I bought 10 more. But we don't have to talk about how quick we went from zero to 100 or one or two to 100 or 300.
But yeah, they're just it was it was mind-blowing for me. It really was. You guys are so sweet. I'm seeing some of these comments scroll across here. I'm so glad that you made it here and thank you so much. I do love these guys. I I love animals. I know you guys love animals. that's why you're here. Um, but they're just they're so amazing and so sweet. My little Gilbert crusted gecko is just so sweet. I love it. My cat is my ride or die. I love how calming and chill the lizards are. Let's see. I I for one am so glad you do this, y'all.
Thank you so much. Thank you, John. John is always in my inbox. John has a couple of gecko eggs um from a female from me and a male that he previously um had purchased and we are waiting. So I think they're getting really close to hatching. I'm so excited for you, John.
So excited. My sandy crusted gecko.
She's special needs. We have a special needs, too. Check out Elf the gecko.
She's so sweet. She's doing fantastic. I need to get an update for you guys for her. I had my dog for 13 years. Oh, I missed that one. I just want to read this one. So sweet. Oh, it's so sweet.
Where did it go? Oh, I lost it. I lost it. That's so sweet. Our Boston Terriers. Mine is getting My oldest one's getting old. And I just love them so much. It makes me sad. That's like another thing with the crested where they have a longer lifespan. It's like really nice to not, you know, have to have that much worry about their age. You know, they do change as they age. They get more relaxed. Their colors may change even.
Um, but they do live for a very long time.
Had my Harley crusted gecko for three months. He still doesn't come to me when I open his enclosure. That's totally normal. Sometimes you just got to get in there and be like, "Okay, buddy. I'm I'm the food god. You have to give me a little bit of a break here." All right.
I'm going to show you guys. I'm going to reveal who this is.
This is Peaches.
Look at her. She's such a potato.
So, Peaches is almost full grown and she is very unique. Lots of pattern and she's a lily white.
So, she has that really cool white chocolate drip. For those of you who are learning, the lily whites almost glow in the dark. I absolutely love to come down to my gecko room when everybody's awake and all the lights are off and count and see what all my crusted geckos are doing. Boop, boop, boop. She's so so sweet. So, she's almost full grown, guys. These guys don't get very big.
And tada, we have a zoo. Welcome to the circus.
Okay, so anyways. Yep. So, this is Peaches. She's She's uh not she's not liking my light.
Peaches.
There we are.
So, we will get her to kind of sit still there. Just a little hand gesture goes a long way so she can settle down. She's just feeling a little shy. She was probably in a deep sleep. They do not have eyelids. So, whenever they're sleeping, it can be a little tricky to tell. And I just kind of said, "Hello.
We're we're going on the camera right now. Thank you. Isn't she fantastic?"
Peaches. Peaches. Peaches. Peaches.
Peaches. I know. That's Every time I think of her, that's exactly what I say.
So, this is Peaches. And she's going to come um with a standard adult enclosure.
So, a 12 18. Nice and roomy for her to grow out in.
I love her. She's so sweet.
So so sweet. My favorite morph morph.
Morph with a th I was like reading lick cute morph.
I have lily white is probably my number one favorite. But the triple X like um marble and insanity where you've got peaches is very similar too. I just I love all of the orange pattern. Um the colors are just so vibrant.
All right, we're getting close. We are getting close. Who is ready?
Who is ready? Oh, the Dalmatians. I know I had several Dalmatians get adopted this week, and I do need to look and see if I have any other Dalmatians ready. We do have um one on the website. Lucky is a little Dalmatian. That one is super cute. I love it. Jessica says, "Manifesting."
Manifesting.
But I do want to make sure that everybody in here feels supported. So, I hope all of the Gecko Club emails have been going to you.

I know some people they put dovom instead of.com and then they went back and resubmitted or they couldn't remember if they already submitted. So you're not in trouble or anything. It just, you know, it makes it a little bit less work if you don't try to give me a bunch of different emails with your name. Um, so but we've got it all taken care of. I did go through and look for any typos and get those fixed, too. So you are all good. I love it. She says, "I have six." And Adventurous Critters is like 54, five. Oh, I love it. I've had so many people follow up with me and let me know that their gecko is thriving. Um, and their geckos are growing. They're thriving. You know, they've they've really incorporated these cute little marshmallows into their life and it's just been fantastic. So, um, it's it's so much fun. They are so much fun and I'm excited to give the opportunity for a free crusted gecko and starter kit just to give back to this company you company community to the community because you guys are so fantastic.

So, I usually have like a big wheel spinner that makes a bunch of noise and stuff like that. Um, this one does not make any noise, so it's a little sad. So, I'm going to need everybody on their keyboard. Um, like let's do like enter and then a number. Let's just spam the chat. So, instead of a drum roll, it's going to be a keyboard roll. This is a female lily white and she is super funky looking.
Very bold coloring. If you are a morph nerd like me, um, this one is a het aanthic.
So, that means the black and white geckos, she has a chance to produce those.
Oh, little Skippy. So, she is more active.
I'm curious if you guys are more into the colors or sweeter personalities.
We've had some very amazing first pick geckos go home to new keepers this week.
This one is just a little hoppy. She's not real bad, but you can see she's kind of little springy. Peaches is normally not springy. I know she was earlier. Um, but I think she was just not liking the light. And this one's thinking about jumping again. So, this is coral.Oop boop. She's so cute.
Should I worry if I never see my gecko shed? You should never worry if you don't see your gecko shed. I have only seen like five crusted geckos shed and they eat their own shed. They do it in the middle of the night. It's like all of a sudden they won't feel very sticky and then all of a sudden they're really super bright and they've shed. Sometimes you may find a little piece, a little glove here and there, but it's totally normal. I love personality and morphs. I have a sweet little aanthic baby. That's so sweet. We have one current aanthic available. I have not listed it yet. I need to get some photos up.
Why would a Harley gain a gram or two and then lose it? Well, if it's an adult, she could um be laying eggs or they could have taken a big number two possibly. Also, hydration is important. So, with the routine, it's important that their humidity does not get below 40%. because at that low of um of humidity, they can dry out very quickly and lose a lot of their um not body water, but their water composition.
And so that could also be part of it as well. Could be a couple different things going on. I would recommend that you reach out to me and let me kind of know what is going on with your enclosure as well as a picture and I can maybe help you figure out why they're losing 2 g at a time because that is kind of significant depending on the size of the gecko. I also have another cute cutie.
Look at these eyes.
this gecko. One of my friends, they come over every once in a while and they always accidentally get this gecko out and she knows exactly who it is because of these beautiful dark blue eyes.
This is Willie. Willie is a super soft yellow.
So, some of the morphs will get these really beautiful eyes. No, no, Willie.
Willy's like, I will jump. I will be face hugging everybody in the chat. Um, but it also allows um a little bit of a difference with the scale structure, which can um increase the color that you see.
So, the soft scales are usually very very rich in color.
He is super cool. So this is Willie.
This is a confirmed boy and he is a chill boy.
Sorry, I'm like so thirsty. Oh, thank you guys. Do you guys have any more questions? I am just so so so thankful.
I'm so thankful and I'm excited. I can't wait to reach out to Jillian um get their gecko to them.
Let's see. Shana has a good question.
Should food bowls be put in the same spot every time or is it best to move them around? I believe it's the best to keep them in the same spot. Um, I know some geckos whenever you upgrade them, it's good to put in like two different places and whichever one you see them eating from or missing food from, that one is their preferred feeding spot. And so you can remove the second option. Um, but I I keep mine in the same spot.
You'll see I have water dishes and I just kind of always set the food right next to the water dish. There's my little food dishes right there in my water dishes. And that just kind of makes it easier for them to find their food. The smells are very fragrant. And so when you start moving around their food, you know, the whole enclosure smells like that and they're going to have to go and find their food, which is natural behavior. Um, but for optimal growth, I think it's best to keep it in the same spot. Is it normal for an adult male crusted gecko to have an average weight of 35 gram? Yes, that is completely normal. I have one male that is probably 35 g with a tail and he is 6 years old. So, um just like me, I'm barely I'm just a little over 5 foot tall and I've been this way since middle school. So, I've just accepted that I'm not going to grow no more. So, your gecko at 35 grams is probably just how he is. Um they're they're very similar to humans in the fact that you know there's a lot of range to their size and um their growth rate even their food preference their handleability and some are just bigger than others. I have his girlfriend is like 65 grams um and he's 35 so you know and they do just fine.
She readily accepts him. Yes, of course.
There is nothing to worry about. What does my husky want right now? That's a good question. What does your husky want? Your husky wants a treat. You might want a treat.
Come get a treat. Treat. Sorry, I just joined the live. When would be a good time to transfer a Crusty to a bigger enclosure? Great question. So, these behind me are 1212 18s. These down here are 1281 18s. So, some of my chunkier females, I've got them um in a little bit of a bigger enclosure. They're a little longer and deeper, so then I can have um more dimension to their enclosure and room for bigger uh egg boxes.
It is very important that it's about how well your crested gecko adjusts. In the the online groups, people are like, "Oh, this is the minimum and oh, that's cruel and you're bad." Don't pay attention to those people. Your crusted gecko is different than everybody and every other crusted gecko out there. I have a beautiful adult male named Blue Jay and I upgraded him to a standard adult enclosure when he was 40 g and he started to lose weight. He was very stressed. So I downgraded him back to his original size enclosure. I waited for him to grow just about five more grams and then I reintroduced him to his larger enclosure and he is doing fantastic. So, the best thing for everybody in here to remember, always weigh your crusted gecko. If you're new to the hobby or maybe you have one that you're worried about for whatever reason, weigh your crusted gecko. Weigh them every two weeks. Sorry, it's like playing pump the jam. I'm having a real hard time, guys. Um, the brain's doing the the the dance song over here. Uh, actually, that's not what this song is.
I lied. Or is it?
Okay. So, anyway, um, so it's important.
Weigh your cristic gecko uh, every two weeks and write it down in a chart.
Actually, in my care page, you can download a chart um, print it up and then just jot it. What that does is it gets your crusted gecko in front of you on a scale in the exact same way every every two weeks. And so you will notice any differences immediately. Um you also will be able to see are they gaining weight. A lot of people worry when they first get their crested gecko that they're not eating totally normal. Um and you know if if it's a prolonged concern then you definitely need to get them on a scale or to the vet. But really, the scale is is the way to go.
Um, so when you feel like your crusted gecko is doing steady, um, you've got the humidity down, everything's rolling good, you're feeling good, your crusted gecko's comfortable, and you're ready for an upgrade, upgrade them. But weigh them before you introduce them to their new enclosure, and then just monitor for the next couple weeks. Make sure everything's doing good. Every time you change their enclosure, they're going to typically go off of food until they have secured the perimeter, made sure this is their little spot. This is where there's no predators, the food is plentiful, and they're happy, and they're thriving.
Not all crested geckos will get an 18, 18, 24. If you're talking about the ones on our website, our youngsters are going to come with a um 8x 8 by 12. They will be perfectly comfortable in those enclosures with the plant I send for 6 to 12 months before they'll be ready for an upgrade. Then once they hit about 25 g, they're safe to upgrade into an adult enclosure. You can also safely up upgrade them to a bioactive as well at that point. And the reason why I wait until 20 to 25 grams is to minimize the risk of choking um or becoming impacted by substrate. Crested geckos aren't the brightest. Sometimes they eat a little too much dirt when they're young and it can be um um a fatal mistake. So, you just want to make sure your gecko is safe, they're eating, their enclosure is drying out every day, and then you'll be set.
Is there a scale that I recommend? um a kitchen scale that weighs in grams. Um the kind of oh, what's the word? The metric that reptile keepers use is grams. So that's what you want to weigh in, not in ounces.
Standard weight 10 years ago was 35 g.
And I think the standards are constantly changing. In the wild, crested geckos usually weigh about 30 g. They're bony.
Um, they kind of just look like old dried up sticks. I'm making a face because the photos of them, I feel bad.
It looks like they're suffering by like captive standards. Um, but some crusted geckos. Sunshine the humongous is like 74 g. He doesn't have a tail. He has been on a diet. Um, he is maintaining his weight. He's lost the extra weight and he lives in a huge enclosure and trampled all the plants and they love it and he's just he's in he's doing great.
He's doing fantastic, but he's a big gecko. So, um I think that now people say, you know, 40 to 45 grams, but really it's more like, you know, 35 to 45 is is kind of the range. But I think that goes to a lot of people's heads when, you know, like one of my males, he's smaller, you know, and it's like, is he a throwaway? No, absolutely not.
He's a chill guy. He's a good boy, you know. So what? Like some dogs have three legs. I don't love them any less. So, you know, it's it's about helping them maintain a healthy weight. You know, if you see the ribs, they're a little too thin for captive bread. Um, if you see big Tootsie Roll rolls up under here when they're sitting, they're probably a little overweight and you should dial back the food just a little. Um, weight watcher scale. Yeah. So, so you want them to be healthy. You want to make sure that they're active um and eating properly and and doing the thing. So, let's see. I'm not sure why mine isn't eating. I've tried a lot of food. I can only hand feed. So, a lot of people feel that way. A lot of people feel like the only time their crusted gecko will eat is if they're being handfed. And what I have um found more than than not is changing the food every feeding can overwhelm a crusted gecko. You're best to stick with one flavor of food regardless of their pre preference for one week, so three feedings before changing to a different flavor. Also, the more you handle your crusted gecko before they settle in, the less likely they are to eat on a regular schedule.
And hand feeding can be tricky because in our mind, um, you know, we see the gecko eating and so we feel good. We feel, okay, good, it is eating. Um, but they can be sneaky eaters. So, I keep the food out in the open so they can easily find it. If you use an elevated dish, make sure there's some cork or some way for them to climb to it because when they're shedding, they can't just stick on the glass and go to their food.
They kind of need to have a bridge there. I keep my food on the bottom. As you can see, they're on the bottom on every single one. Sometimes I'll do an elevated water dish. Um, but I'll do like two two water dishes. one elevated and one down below. Um, and it's just to make sure, hey, look, they know where the food is. It's out in the open. They can use their little sniffer and sniff their way right to it. Get their belly full. Um, if you are concerned about your crested geckos weight or feeding response, you may worry they're not eating. Look for little poo poos in the enclosure and give them about a full week. Um, most of the time they're eating, but when they're small, their belly is like the size of a sesame seed.
And the way that the food once you mix it with water kind of gels up, it may be tricky to even tell that they've eaten.
Um, as far as paper towels and okay substrate their whole life, yes. Never ever use repticarpet. Their tiny claws can accidentally get snagged in that and they can accidentally ingest that stuff.
It's like fishing line. Um, so I actually use paper towels in probably 90% of my enclosures. I do have bioactives with real substrate drainage layers, real plants. I also have um bioactives with fake plants only. And that works really good as well if you don't have a green thumb. And but paper towels are just great. It's very hygienic. It's easy to monitor your crested gecko, especially a new gecko.
It's the easiest way to monitor and make sure that they're using the bathroom um and that everything's looking good. I just went through this with Rusty. Yes, John. Lil Rusty gave you a scare not wanting to eat at first, but it just takes a little time. Um I've had a crusted gecko, Ebony. You'll see her in a lot of my videos. She uh she didn't eat for like three weeks and I was stressing really bad. She was one of my my beginner geckos. And um uh she did. She finally ate. So she just was mad that she got kicked out of her old home and was living with me in Tennessee and she was she had never been anywhere else. And she's doing fantastic. She is she's in that enclosure right there. She's actually looking at me. You guys can't tell, but she's right there. And she's just like with the leaves scowlling, giving me evils. Is it normal to see droppings every other day for a juvenile crusted gecko? So, the droppings will kind of come and go.
Sometimes they are busy with the poo poos. Um, sometimes not so much. I think a lot of it has to do with in regards to their bowel movements. I do not do meal worms. The chitten can cause them a little upset tummy. Um, and I do make sure that my crusted gecko diet has a little bit of fluidity to it. So, more like applesauce than pudding. Um, it doesn't keep its shape. It kind of gels out. And that added moisture in their diet can kind of help them with their bowel movements. But I do recommend to stay away from meal worms just because it's very easy to overload them with chitten and then that's when they kind of get their pretty hard stools and just being in a little soft squishy marshmallow. I just don't think that would be comfortable for them. Some of my crusted geckos will use the bathroom, you know, every other day, every third day, three times a day. Um, and they don't always eat at every feeding either. So, I have a lot of geckos. They all get fed on the same day. And, um, you know, Ebony, she ate all of her food. Her bowl looks clean. And the one below her, you can see right there, right there, full of food. Didn't even touch it. But then when I go to feed tonight, chances are good the one on the bottom's gonna eat everything and Ebony's gonna eat everything again because she's a pig. She loves her gecko food. So, oh yes, thanks, John. I'm so glad you guys came out. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have one who thinks he is a gorilla and I swear he throws his poop. I just That's impossible. They don't have thumbs.
Oh gosh, that's so gross. That's so gross. Is it a luchi? I'm just asking for a friend if it's a luchi. Um so all right, let's see. Where are we at? I think um we are at the end of our evening.
