The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20-30% of the world's oil exports pass daily, making it strategically vital for global energy security and economic stability. When tensions arise in this region, they can immediately impact global oil prices and energy markets, as demonstrated by the US-Iran diplomatic standoff where President Trump's announcement to end the blockade highlighted the interconnected nature of regional conflicts and international energy supply chains.

IRAN LATEST: Donald Trump to END blockade of the Strait of Hormuz ‘MUST be immediately open!’Added:
Um, should we have a look at what's happening with the Iran situation cuz President Trump has announced he will end that US blockade of Iranian shipping in the straight of Hulmoose?
>> The US president gathered his advisers apparently in the White House situation room yesterday seeking to make a final decision over signing a new ceasefire deal with Iran. In response, Iran said its nuclear program is not up for negotiation and described President Trump's comments of a mixture of truth and lies.
>> Well, joining us now is former chairman for the Defense Select Committee, Tobias Elwood. A very good morning to you. Um, I mean, when I heard Iran saying that, that their uh nuclear program was not up for negotiation, you think, well, they would say that, wouldn't they? Haven't we got a case where both sides are just sort of posturing at each other?
Good morning. Yes, that's a a fantastic summary. Uh both sides are realizing they don't want to go back to war.
Donald Trump himself, it's worth looking at this from his perspective. He now appreciates uh he has not met any of his own objectives when he embarked on this war in the first place. Iran may be militarily and economically weaker, but the regime is still in place. There's no been no uprising of the people of Iran and it still possesses the ability and desire to pursue that nuclear weapon and most importantly as we see Iran has a strangle hold over the straits of of Humuz and back home in America the war is deeply unpopular. It's hit petrol prices and affected Trump's MAGA base they on the promise that Trump made that he wouldn't embark on these overseas engagements. So Trump wants out. There's no doubt about it. And he's divided this plan to get out in two stages. First, there is this immediate ceasefire, keeping the straits open, and then parking all the difficult questions uh for over the next 60 days for a longer, bigger document to be agreed. I think what he's actually planning to do is just get everybody to try and move on and uh talk about other things. He's got the World Cup in America to consider.
There's also a threat of what he might do with Cuba as well. So he wants to draw a line on what's going on in Iran.
But he can't do that until the Straits of Hormuz opens. He realizes that because the rest rest of the world will continue to watch. And that's what these next couple of days are all about.
Whether he can achieve a minimum that success of getting the straits back open for all traffic to move.
>> We're living in a time of what feels like pretty significant social change.
And it makes us question things that we've even taken for granted for decades. And one of those at the moment that people are wondering about is actually money. Is the money in your bank account safe? Should you be investing elsewhere? Are we looking at a potential global crash? What will it mean for your savings? Is there a way that you could be using your money that might be outside of government control even? Well, Tally Money is potentially one solution. So, I'm delighted to say that I'm joined today by the CEO and founder of Tally Money, Cameron Perry.
What is Tally Money?
>> Well, at Tally Money, you basically get gold you can spend. So, we give people an individual uh account in their name, everyday account. They get a sort code, an account number. They use that account just like they would pounds from their bank, but uh it's milligrams of gold that we brand as tally.
>> Okay. Why would you do that though? What is the benefit to the customer instead of just having a normal pound sterling account?
>> Gold's performance against the pound is above 11% peranom over the last 25 years on average. But we still need money in our daily lives. And we we have savings.
We know that it's good common sense and prudent to save up for things, not just living credit. you know, whether it's a holiday or a rainy day, uh your retirement planning, you need to have money in your life, basically that you can rely on that's dependable, that nobody meddles with, that nobody can weaponize against you, which is another element of government control when it's the government currency, which we could talk about another time, and it should be pretty simple and straightforward, and that's what we deliver at Tally. Um, and really, we just want people to feel safe and happy with their money. There was a time when the bigger your bank balance, the the more confident you felt. Now it's like I need to do something with it. I can't leave it there. In tally you can.
>> Okay. Brilliant. Cameron Perry from Tally Money. Thank you so much.
>> Thank you babe.
>> Yeah. But that's so it seems like the ultimate goal here Tobias is to is to get back to the status quo. because it's difficult to see how um we are in regard to Iran and and what it does in the world and particularly in the Middle East that we're in any better a position at all.
I think that's the sadness of this entire uh events of the last seven or eight weeks or so. As Middle East Minister, I was always saddened at how little the world did to stand up to Iran because of its proxy influence across the Middle East, what it did through Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthies and so forth. We didn't do enough to support Lebanon and what was going on there. We didn't do enough to deal with Hamas in in Gaza. And we certainly didn't do enough uh to stand up to Iran and its support for for Russia. And yet here we are, an American president finally doing something about it, but doing it in such a wrong way that we've actually missed an opportunity to give the Iranian people a possibility of a new chapter.
So, as you imply, we're back to square one.
>> Do can I ask you though, do do we know are you aware of who the Trump administration is actually dealing with in Iran? because obviously the a lot of the regime has gone as being killed, but then everything now seems to be a lot more fractured and it's whether they're dealing with the IRGC or whether they're dealing with actual members of of government per se.
Well, there's two aspects to this is firstly in Iran, you're absolutely right that the removal of many many of the clerics including the former Ayatollah has meant that the IRGC has actually come in and the Ayatollah's son is now in power. So, you've actually got a more hardline Iran than you had prior to the invasion. But on the flip side, I have to say this with some sadness that the experts uh over a hundred were removed by Doge when they when uh um Musk did his uh inventory, his assessment of of uh the American government and 100 Middle East experts were removed from the American State Department who could give better advice to the White House on what should or should not be done. It was clear to everybody who's understood this and everybody now that if you dabble with Iran and you don't actually control all everything that's going on in that country, they will threaten to actually influence and disrupt the straight up muse. That's exactly what they did. And that's exactly the dilemma Donald Trump finds himself in right now.
>> At the start of all this, President Trump met some berieved parents in the White House, didn't he? Parents who'd lost their serving children. And um they said to him, or at least they told the press afterwards that they had said to him, don't start this war unless you finish it. Finish the job. In other words, our children must not have died in vain. Are you scared that he is just simply not going to finish it?
>> I think he's realizing he needs to get out and so there will no be finished.
There will be won't be a finish here at all. And sadly, there's a there's a repeat, I'm afraid, a lack of muscle memory when it comes to America. If you think of the other engagements of of Korea, Vietnam, even Iraq and Afghanistan, it's very easy to start a war. It's very much much much harder to actually end it on your own terms.
>> Okay, Tobiaswood, as always, it's good to see you. Thank you.
>> Thank you.
