Ghana's Independence Hero Overthrown While Visiting ChinaAñadido:
The greatest Pan-African leader was destroyed by the very unity he championed. It's 1957, Accra, Ghana. The Gold Coast becomes Africa's first independent nation, and crowds dance in the streets. He builds schools, hospitals, and the massive Akosombo Dam.
His socialist policies lift millions from poverty while he preached his African unity across the continent.
Liberation movements from Kenya to Algeria looked to him for inspiration.
He becomes the voice of non-alignment during the Cold War, refusing to pick sides between America and Russia. His popularity soars at home, but his one-party state and Soviet leanings worry the military officers Britain had trained. For years, he balances domestic reform with international diplomacy. But in February 1966, Vietnam peace talks in China call him away from Ghana. He boards the plane, trusting the military he had modernized and empowered. Within hours of his departure, tanks roll through Accra. Soldiers destroy his statues and ban his party. The radio announces his government is finished, and crowds that once cheered him stay silent. The father of African independence who died in exile was Kwame Nkrumah.
