In 1948, the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin by cutting all roads, railways, and canals, turning the city into an isolated island surrounded by Soviet-controlled territory. Despite military commanders warning that it was impossible to supply a city of 2 million people by air, President Truman launched the Berlin Airlift, flying food, medicine, fuel, and coal into the city around the clock. The operation, initially too small and fragile, was rebuilt into an assembly line with planes landing every few minutes. For 11 months, the airlift kept West Berlin alive, ultimately forcing Stalin to lift the blockade in May 1949 without firing a shot. This event marked one of the first major confrontations of the Cold War, demonstrating that diplomatic and logistical resolve could prevail over military pressure.
