Congress Returns To TN Cabinet After 59 Years As Vijay Expands Alliance Power | N18V | 4KAdded:
For the first time in 59 years, Congress will now be part of the coalition government in Tamil Nadu. This after TVK did not get the majority, did not cross the halfway mark, and therefore with the help of parties like the Congress, the Left, the VCK, and the IUML, TVK did form the government. Vijay, when he launched his political party, said that if parties join hands with the TVK, they will share power. So, now with the parties helping TVK form the government, Congress gets two cabinet portfolios, and that is something that is happening in Tamil Nadu after 59 years. Rajesh Kumar, the Congress MLA, was sworn in earlier today here, and he's been given the tourism portfolio. Vishwanathan, the other Congress MLA, is given the higher education portfolio.
So, two key portfolios given to Congress.
So far, 33 ministers have been sworn in.
They can accommodate two more, and they've reserved those two seats, one for the VCK and one for the IUML. VCK sources say have confirmed that they'll be part of the coalition government, but they were not part of the swearing in today. They will be They will be part of the cabinet when the cabinet expands. So, two seats and two portfolios are reserved for the VCK and the IUML is what sources say. But for the first time, Congress is now part of the coalition government. Many Congress leaders we spoke to say that it is an emotional moment. This did not start now. Even before elections, when there was a strain between the DMK and the Congress talked, some of the Congress leaders, including Manickam Tagore, had openly spoken about time for sharing of power. DMK President MK Stalin then had ruled that out, saying that in Tamil Nadu, coalition government will not work, sharing of power will not work, and he put an end to that. Congress leaders, some of them were not happy, but even then Congress decided to go ahead with the DMK and after elections when TVK wanted the help of quote unquote secular parties, Congress was the first to in fact come out in support of TVK and since then there have been talks. Initially TVK offered one, Congress wanted two. So two of the five MLAs are now part of the cabinet given key portfolios as well. So interesting days ahead. Congress thinks that in Tamil Nadu with this they will grow further and this is something that Congress leaders had told us when we asked them about Congress' growth in Tamil Nadu with now Congress being part of the coalition government. So they've said that this will only help in stability of the TVK government. The TVK government will continue for the next five years with the help of parties of parties like the Congress and they say that they will ensure that there is stability with the coalition government in Tamil Nadu.
