Because the hardware is identical, the perceived difference in size is an optical illusion. To understand this, we have to look past the eyeball and examine the anatomical layers that frame it. The underlying skeletal foundation is consistent. Human orbital cavities share a universal volume. This chart shows that eye size is simply the circumference of the visible skin opening laid over that identical sphere. That opening is determined by three layers: skeletal depth, subcutaneous fat, and skin mechanics. When we stop focusing on the eyeball itself, we can see how these facial layers construct a specific biological window. Layer one is skeletal depth. European skulls often have recessed eye sockets beneath a protruding brow ridge, while East Asian skulls have a flatter bone structure.
This forces the eye to rest flush with the face, changing how shadows define depth. Moving outward, we reach the second layer, the subcutaneous fat cushion. In East Asian anatomy, a thicker distribution of fat is concentrated across the upper eyelid.
This fat contributes to the epicanthic fold, a skin adaptation that covers the inner tear duct, unlike the exposed corners found in European eyes. This combination of a flush skeletal foundation and a dense fat cushion crowds the space around the eyeball, reducing the exposed surface area. The final layer is the skin crease, which marks the mechanical difference between a double eyelid and a monolid. When a double eyelid opens, the skin folds back into a recess. A monolid has a smooth, uncreased surface that cannot fold away.
To open the eye, the underlying muscle must pull this smooth skin straight up against that layer of fat. Because the skin doesn't fold, its lower edge rests lower over the top of the cornea. This physical restriction in how far the skin can retract is what narrows the visual circumference.
The perceived size difference is a kinematic illusion created by uncreased skin moving against a thick fat layer.
