[00:00:50]>> And uh before we we tell you which watch are we reviewing today, let's just go quickly to our uh what is it? the uh scoreboard. So, we reviewed 10 watches so far starting with Astron and Grand Seiko and Tentagramraph and couple of Omegas and number of Seikko divers.

[00:01:27]You might be surprised. Uh Big W $10 watch is 10th of the on the list on the bottom.

[00:01:32]>> Rightfully so. I mean, how could it >> how could it beat anyone surely?

[00:01:37]>> But on the top of the list is Seiko Astron SH1 186J that we reviewed which scored 127 out of 150.

[00:01:46]>> Uh so the watch we reviewing today, I got a feeling it will be I say probably in the in the top five of of the list.

[00:02:11]>> What are we talking about? Uh anyone who is a fan of Seikko, especially vintage Seikko, will know that we're talking about the SKX. Uh so we've got 007, which is the uh the black bezel. We've got 009, which is the blue and red, the Pepsi, and the orange.

[00:02:29]>> Uh 011 for the orange. Happy birthday.

[00:02:32]>> Happy 30th birthday. Released about this time in 1996 >> in continuous production for 23 years in 12 2019.

[00:02:44]>> And it wasn't discontinued. It was killed >> was assassinated >> by Seiko.

[00:02:51]Seiko had >> inside job.

[00:02:53]>> Seikko had enough of it.

[00:02:54]>> Yeah.

[00:02:55]>> Because it was the most produced diver automatic watch of all times.

[00:03:00]>> And it was best sold watch. It has a global coverage.

[00:03:05]>> Asia, Australia, Europe, North Americas.

[00:03:08]And it was one of the best divers watches of all times.

[00:03:13]that watch has probably kept the watch making industry alive entirely on its own in some countries and then has been a big part of it in others for sure.

[00:03:29]But again, according to according to official sources, the SKX007 is probably a SEO diver that ended up on most wrist in the world. Wow.

[00:03:43]>> And also for its entire production, it was the cheapest ISO standard divers watch of all times.

[00:03:54]>> How could you not have one? Well, I was just about to >> collector like if you don't have an SKX 007 or a 009 J would be nice to which is the uh >> K also >> the uh Jubilee bracelet >> next to your part next to your Submariner next to your AP Royal Oak.

[00:04:13]>> I suggest you pause hit the pause now and go and buy SKX 007 or 009 >> because by the end of this video the price will double. I mean, >> you know, we we actually bought one for my brother. We bought the 009 J2. So, it's a Pepsi bezel with the bracelet.

[00:04:33]>> And that was when he was 30. So, that was 6 years ago, and it was $300 on eBay. It was like an unused uh >> mint condition >> mint condition one. Now, that's like 1,100 bucks.

[00:05:44]>> Okay, so what happened about 10 15 years ago? Um, I've decided to do a little uh online tutorial. That was before people watched YouTube. It was at the time where people were on a Yahoo groups and mailing lists. Wow.

[00:05:58]>> And yeah, and I pulled the uh SKX uh uh 7S26 movement apart. I did tutorial from you know opening the case back, taking a stem out and movement, dial hands, complete disassembly and reassembly. It was it was a static online kind of tutorial >> because there is a technical guide available but seeing someone else do it with photos and things like this is much nicer.

[00:06:20]>> Yeah. And it was intended to our watch collectors who people who have multiple watches you know Rolex and this and that and Omegas and and many of them talked about themselves as watch really deep into watches right where they were not.

[00:06:36]They were only dialed surface deep. And most of you are they I mean I'm not going to sugarcoat this. You most of you have no clue what's inside what's between the case back and and and and dial.

[00:06:47]>> So this tutorial was intended to serious watch collectors >> and we encourage them I encourage them go online buy 7S26 Seikko watch any watch you can. At that time they were like $99 right? Not SKX, but the standard SEO fives.

[00:07:06]>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:07:08]>> And there's no harm of pulling apart $99 watch.

[00:07:11]>> Yeah. Not then. 2 and a half grand now.

[00:07:13]>> Well, many end up buying SKX version because they like the diver and they want to pull it apart, put it back together and then wear it.

[00:07:20]And the confession is I believe there are at least many thousands of those watches >> partially disassembled still everywhere around the globe.

[00:07:34]>> Yeah, it's you're probably singlehandedly uh responsible for the deaths of you would have you might even have to say thousands of SKX or maybe not SKX but 7S26 movements at least.

[00:07:47]>> Yeah, I'm guilty. I'm sorry about it, but you're also guilty as well because 5 years ago, we actually put a fourpart tutorial on uh YouTube. It's you and me talking about in detail how to how to disassemble and reassemble 7S. I'll put a link to those videos. You look much younger five years ago. No beard there.

[00:08:05]>> Yeah, we had even a a class or two in here where we had a few people do it. I mean, at least those ones were reassembled because we we made sure they were. But >> yeah, I we I got a lot of emails from all over the world back then, you know, it was again pre-YouTube >> and u uh disassembling 7S26 was a Lego for grown-ups.

[00:08:29]>> Yeah, if if you're a grown-up man, uh there's not much you can, you know, kind of pull apart if you're into watches and put back together and get that level of enjoyment.

[00:08:39]>> Yeah. At least not if you're a a watch sort of hobbyist, you know, there really isn't anything like it. The the sort of, >> you know, the care that you have to take and that sort of thing. It's Yeah, it's nice to do. It's it was fantastic. U but the core the starting point of disassembly was SIEO instruments group manual for 7S26 movement. And this document to this day is in my mind probably the most comprehensive watch disassembly manual of all times.

[00:09:19]>> We will put plenty of photos. We're not going to go right now into we start with a 15 points.

[00:09:24]>> Yeah, we'll get maybe to >> but just your your your overview of a document itself. Look, the >> as a watch maker, >> technical guides technically you should not be able to get because it's under the same kind of jurisdiction as uh parts not being available.

[00:09:41]>> So, Amigga guides, the only ones you can find are ones that someone has who's worked at Omega happens to have the PDF and has put it online. You shouldn't be able to get them.

[00:09:51]>> So, already it's annoying. The fact that this one is readily available because they're really good guys and we love them is fantastic. On top of that, the size of the photos, they have a photo for every part if you're ordering spare parts. Um, you know, just how it's laid out is absolutely fantastic.

[00:10:11]>> Oiling charts.

[00:10:12]>> Yeah, the Seikko ones are probably the best. The next best I would say is the 7750. That's quite a good one because it's got all different variations, but >> beyond that, >> they're very difficult to get and they're kind of annoying sometimes.

[00:10:27]>> Uh let's get into 15 points and find out how this SKX rates against watches we reviewed previously and also to find out simply who loves it better, Andrew or myself.

[00:10:40]>> Yeah.

[00:10:41]>> Okay. Starting point number one. The watch was originally released at the price of about $130 converted in today's money. It was it wasund uh 13,000 yen.

[00:10:53]>> Okay.

[00:10:53]>> So was it was very much an entry level >> a divers watch in Seikko range.

[00:10:59]>> Yeah. That's like 200 bucks max.

[00:11:00]>> Yeah.

[00:11:01]>> Yeah. In today's money surely.

[00:11:02]>> Okay. Number one dial in hands.

[00:11:06]>> Let's have a look again.

[00:11:08]And as you're looking at the at the watch the in 1996 when the watch was released uh prior to that the current diver with a 7S26 movement uh sorry 7000 movement was u this model it is uh 7002-7000.

[00:11:28]So, caliber 70002-7000 same case size but not day and date and uh >> it was a it was a so Seikko already had a diver watch but what made the uh SKX special is number of things that we will cover in this review.

[00:11:45]>> Yeah.

[00:11:45]>> Dial and hands.

[00:11:46]>> Dial and hands. Look, they're lovely.

[00:11:49]They're fantastic. They're Seikko quality. The the dial on these I like because it's difficult to mark. um the the paint isn't so um fragile. Uh but look, there's no raised markers. You know, everything's really clear. The printing uh and the loom is like really accurate, but there's no raised markers.

[00:12:10]The hands are just sort of, you know, rounded polished finish, so they're not super sharp like your more expensive Seikkos um and others. I'd have to say that's that's a five for me. Not that it's bad, but this is like >> it's a mass-produced dial.

[00:12:26]>> This is an average dial. This is this is what it should look like.

[00:12:29]>> Yeah. Yeah. I'll say five.

[00:12:30]>> I like design of the dial. Uh >> but that's a separate issue alto together.

[00:12:35]>> The hands are semig gloss. That's that's nice. Uh but yes, industrial industrial product.

[00:12:43]Yeah.

[00:12:44]>> I'll say probably six out of 10 for dial and hands.

[00:12:47]>> Yep.

[00:12:47]>> Number two, case and crystal.

[00:12:49]>> Yeah. So 41 and a half mil.

[00:12:50]>> 42 really measured.

[00:12:52]>> 42. Yeah. Okay. Okay. So, that's perfect size.

[00:12:54]>> Yep.

[00:12:54]>> I think anyway, um, hardlex glass, no AR coating, which is kind of period correct, I suppose.

[00:13:02]>> Uh, one detail, see this is >> watch makers now talking AR coating on a flat crystal is not necessary. It's not necessary.

[00:13:13]>> On a flat crystal, reflection is not a problem.

[00:13:16]>> Yeah, because it's because it's flat. It really only comes in on one light.

[00:13:20]That's that's why you know >> but the moment you start introducing a dome of some kind this is when you need to anti-reflective coat the crystal either from underneath >> it picks up the reflection from multiple lights because there's a curved surface now it's getting lights from here coming in rather than just the one above you into your eye sort of thing.

[00:13:38]>> Yeah.

[00:13:39]>> So no coating is not not a problem at all.

[00:13:43]>> Uh yep. So what is it? This hardlex.

[00:13:46]>> Hardlex. Yep. Screw lock crown.

[00:13:48]>> Yep. So the, you know, like current, we were talking about before, current Seiko 5s don't have screw lock crown. Probably don't need it, but um screw lock crown is nice on this one.

[00:13:57]>> Yep.

[00:14:00]>> With with the uh case, I love the case.

[00:14:03]I love the polish. It's high gloss >> uh brush lugs on top. It's a beautifully robust case with uh >> one of the most recognizable cases on the planet. Actually, you know, when you when you touch it, when you hold this watch in your hand, it feels $1,000 watch. It doesn't feel like $130 watch.

[00:14:24]It feels much better than than what price would suggest. So, that is that is very important to me for sure. I'm going to say six.

[00:14:33]>> I'm going to say seven. Okay. Yeah. I like the uh case and if it's not sapphire crystal, it's fine. Bracelet.

[00:14:41]>> Bracelet. So, uh, I'm more familiar with the Jubilee, which is lovely, and I I I prefer that one to the rubber strap.

[00:14:48]This one has a rubber strap. Um, it's jingly. I prefer modern bracelets with solid links, solid end links that has like the little the the um, you know, the sheet metal uh, end links.

[00:15:00]>> Um, no toolless micro adjust. You have to use the pin or something.

[00:15:07]But it is really nicely finished. If you ever see one, you know, brand new, mint, unused, not refinished, but brand new, they are actually really nicely finished.

[00:15:15]>> Hey, how about a quick uh bracelet test or strap test?

[00:15:19]>> Oh, here you go. Here's the Hang on.

[00:15:21]Here's the 200 me uh 200 Newtons.

[00:15:26]I'm literally Go one more time.

[00:15:28]>> Yeah, one more. Okay, I'm >> This is a a full strength as as we're sitting, you know. Yep. No problem whatsoever. Massive pins. Uh, beautiful rubber uh uh strap.

[00:15:42]>> Do that to your moon watch leather bracelet. Leather strap. Sorry.

[00:15:46]>> Yeah, I I'm I'm This is This is very impressive. On a rubber. I'm I'm going to go nine out of 10. See, >> that's a rubber and a spring-loaded bar.

[00:15:56]>> Okay. Yeah, true. I'm going to say seven >> only because I personally don't like the rubber and little things annoying me about the the bracelet, but only only because I'm picky. Uh fine. Uh movement number four.

[00:16:11]>> Okay. So, uh automatic caliber NH25 or 26 >> or S26 >> or 7S26.

[00:16:17]>> Y >> which is uh no manual wind.

[00:16:20]>> That's annoying.

[00:16:21]>> But I guess period no um hack.

[00:16:26]>> Yeah.

[00:16:27]>> Should it have a hack? Look, we we already uh we started with the two most negative thing about 7S26, right?

[00:16:36]Negative compared to other contemporary movements.

[00:16:40]>> True. Yeah. True.

[00:16:42]>> This movement. Okay. We'll go positive then.

[00:16:45]>> No. No. Let's discuss no hack for example.

[00:16:48]>> Okay. Yeah. Yeah.

[00:16:49]>> Can this work be thinking >> hacked actually? Yes. with this applying a pressure on the stem counterwise.

[00:16:58]>> Yeah. Yeah. So, when you're in the time set position, >> if you just you don't wind the hands backwards, but you just give it enough pressure so that the second hand stops ticking. Cuz what you're doing is you're you're turning the cannon pinion back, which is turning the center wheel the the wrong way that it normally travels.

[00:17:17]And that back pressure stops the escape wheel from turning >> because it's against the pallet. it can really only turn in one direction. Um, so don't, you know, do it for too long or make a habit of it. But you can hack it, I guess. Technically, yeah, >> technically you can. It's a very primitive way of doing it. Uh, should have sac a hack lever there somewhere.

[00:17:38]How much would that increase the production cost? Not much, >> but it is what it is. All right. It is it is something that I would rate the movement lower because of that.

[00:17:49]>> It is the most sold watch on earth, I guess. like not many people really care.

[00:17:53]>> Uh the other the other issue that you said just mentioned is you can't wind the watch manually.

[00:17:58]>> Uh we talk about this. Is that really necessary? It would be nice if you could. It would be really nice if you could.

[00:18:06]>> Especially if you're not wearing it over the weekend. You start on Monday and it's dead. You really have to stand there >> shake it a few times for >> I think I think they say 100 to 150 on them.

[00:18:16]>> No. No. They said if you want a proper technical explanation how to wind a watch without manual wind, refer to manual please. It says here 60 minutes on a winder >> at 30 RPM.

[00:18:31]>> There you go.

[00:18:32]>> It's very specific. So if you have a watch winder, this is the kind of watch you wouldn't mind putting on a watch winder. But the efficiency of magic lever is such that watch will build power reserve much faster. Yeah. much faster than your uh Swiss movement with the standard auto reverse wheels.

[00:18:51]>> That's true because it's got the the PS.

[00:18:54]Yep, that's true.

[00:18:55]>> Okay. So, the movement is caliber uh 7S26 or NH 26.

[00:19:02]>> Yeah.

[00:19:02]>> 25 and 26. The difference is the no uh day.

[00:19:05]>> Yeah.

[00:19:06]>> Both have date, but the 25 doesn't have the date.

[00:19:08]>> That's the only difference between caliber 50 25 and 26. Mhm.

[00:19:13]>> Uh for 21 jewel.

[00:19:17]>> Yeah, that's nice.

[00:19:19]>> And I think maybe we should go into manual right now and talk about uh reasons why we love Oh, no. Leave this for serviceability.

[00:19:29]>> Okay. So, how would you rate the movement to timekeeping? Timekeeping.

[00:19:33]>> Well, timekeeping. So, they're claimed in >> We will talk about accuracy later as well.

[00:19:38]>> Okay. So, the construction of the movement, just the construction, the finishes, you know, they're not fantastic. It's a six. It has to be a six movement. It gets a six because of who it is. I think it also gets a six because of what it is.

[00:19:54]>> Yep. I'll say it's five for me.

[00:19:56]>> Mhm.

[00:19:57]>> Okay. On a movement.

[00:19:58]>> Yep.

[00:19:59]>> Um, number five, functionality, time, >> time, day, date, uh, and, uh, rotating bezel. timer on a bezel. Yeah, that's nice. That's kind of average.

[00:20:17]>> Right. So, there was a >> English/Japanese version. It was English/Arabic.

[00:20:30]>> So, you get the That's why you got to get the J if you want the Japanese uh the kanji or whatever it is.

[00:20:47]>> Functionality is eight because it's a diver watch. So, what else can you ask?

[00:21:00]>> Look, it is one of the more legible dive uh divers you can get. It's Rolexesque in that it's got a dark dial.

[00:21:09]Um really bright loom. Um you know, large markers. There's obviously cuz it's uh ISO >> certified.

[00:21:20]>> Uh the second's hand has a dot of loom as well, which is quite large, so you can't actually see that in pitch black darkness.

[00:21:27]>> It is actually a really good diver. This is this is the one you should get if you're going to go diving. Don't dive with your James Cameron.

[00:21:33]>> Even with the This is a 1994. So preKX model. Look at it. It still glows in dark. 1994.

[00:21:42]>> That's 30 years. Is it?

[00:21:44]>> I mean, a tr would it be better with a treaty of dial or worse?

[00:21:46]>> No, it would be worse. Even even a dot on a on a on a bezel glows like >> Yeah.

[00:21:52]>> Crazy. Fantastic. I have another SKX here, a black boy. This is well beaten up. Uh, you know, the date disc also glows.

[00:22:01]>> What?

[00:22:02]>> Yeah. Uh, look at this. This is your at least 25 years old watch. Still glows. I love it. Legibility to me, it is uh nine out of 10.

[00:22:13]>> Yeah, it kind of has to be. I mean, how can we rate it any lower? It's it's if the ISO people are like, "This is how legible your diver has to be." How could we say it's not?

[00:22:24]>> No.

[00:22:24]>> Nine.

[00:22:25]>> Nine. Uh, accuracy number seven.

[00:22:28]>> Okay. So claimed minus 25 plus 35 seconds a day.

[00:22:33]>> Y >> um that's static accuracy and this is nice part of the technical guide.

[00:22:38]Measurements should be done within 10 to 60 minutes after fully wound up.

[00:22:42]>> Um and all measurements made without calendar and function. So you'd have to do them say at midday on on the time on the watch.

[00:22:50]um three positions measured and uh it says specifically to use a a witsy uh watch expert timing machine. That's like $12,000. It's very expensive. Um now posture difference difference is under 60 seconds within maximum minimum value um for how different it is in each positions and then uh isocchronism over 24 hours.

[00:23:19]Uh it's got dialup position only and difference of static accuracy between 24 hours and 0 hours minus 20 to plus 40 seconds per day. Mhm.

[00:23:30]>> So they they basically say it should pretty much keep their manufactured standard all the way down to um half power reserve.

[00:23:40]>> And again these are Seiko kind of don't trouble us with accuracy. We don't want to know >> measurements and and and guides and you know extremes. But we know we know as a watch makers and you as owner if you had a SKX uh with a 7S26 movement you know that that movement can keep much much better time when adjusted. Some out of box some need adjustment.

[00:24:04]>> This is essentially that that's the worst case.

[00:24:07]>> Absolutely worst case scenario. If a watch had >> say um you know >> plus 35 seconds a day we would be adjusting it. You don't you don't leave it at that, you know, but that's just that's what they can guarantee based on what it's made from, how it's manufactured, etc. >> Yep. Uh based on that accuracy, how would you rate it?

[00:24:31]I mean, let's I'm going to call it I'm going to call it six, but I kind of feel like almost five because I I feel like there are just so many smaller um ranges these days. I should say ranges.

[00:24:53]>> So, you forgetting one thing. We are rating the accuracy of a watch that just turned 30 years of age. Okay. So, we talking some a standard that was that was established 30 years ago. All right. Still, I I agree with you. It's probably five from me as well >> on a on a time keeping.

[00:25:14]>> Yeah. See, I said six.

[00:25:16]>> No, you said six. Maybe five. Six.

[00:25:18]>> Yeah. I'm going to I'm going to call it six.

[00:25:20]>> Okay. I'll call it five.

[00:25:21]>> Okay. again >> only because they're very clear about how they um how they rate it and all that sort of thing.

[00:25:28]>> Power reserve >> 41 hours. It's low by today's standards.

[00:25:33]It's probably correct by when it was uh first introduced.

[00:25:37]>> Y also six.

[00:25:40]>> I'll say eight. It's nothing wrong with a 41 hour power reserve on a diver watch that you will wear daily anyway because you can't wind it manually.

[00:25:49]>> That's true. But see, can't wind it manually takes a point for me. If it was also a manual wind, I'd maybe say seven.

[00:25:56]>> Fine. Uh, >> take notes. See, >> number nine, water resistance. So, this is a big one.

[00:26:02]>> It is a 200 m divers watch, meaning >> 200 m ISO certified.

If you look at other guides, ones that you happen to find on the black market of the internet to, you know, find out how to do a watch, um it'll have the branded um lubrication like it'll say, for example, >> but it won't say anything. You >> or it won't say anything, but it'll say, for example, like Rolex lubrication number five.

[00:31:14]>> What the hell is that? That could be Mobius 9010 or 9415, but you have no idea because they call it, you know, Rolex number five. So it's a it's annoying. They they know that people are going to find them, but they provide this stuff. The S SII products.

[00:31:32]If you are an engineering student, I again pause, go online, download NH26 SI PDF file >> and just look at those drawings. Look at those drawings. This is your next 40 years of your employment. You'll be lucky to work on a fine movement like this. But look at the detail. Look at the uh every single component in watch is numbered. You can order every single component still. You can find this the model reference number. They got sections. They've got like detail views.

[00:32:09]Um it's it's crazy. See, if you have a look at this, uh, a lot of the Swiss guides that you'll find, they put the screws, if they have a page with the screws, and if on top of that, they have pictures. They put the picture basically the same size as the screw. So, sometimes you'd think it'd be easy because you can just put the screw over the picture and go, "Oh, that's the one." But they're so similar that you can't tell which one's which. Look at the size of it. Fantastic.

[00:32:37]>> Yeah. I I can't I can't speak highly enough about a technical manual and also goes in detail. For example, there's another detail, right? You watch maker.

[00:32:46]>> You've disassembled hundreds or maybe thousands of Seikko watches. I guarantee you, you would have no clue how to align the auto winding system with the rotor properly unless you refer to manual because there's a very specific three points which needs to be aligned. the middle of the rotor aligned with the stem and then the >> and then you've got like the so on the the style of the rotor there's kind of like a little I will put a picture up there's like a little click you know at the end >> there's a dot on the um uh >> first reduction wheel.

[00:33:20]>> Yeah. And then that lines up with the tip which lines up with a point on the balance [ __ ] and that lines up with if that's uh three it'll be 6:00.

[00:33:29]>> Yeah. Yeah. So, so first thing you I'm talking now to to my fellow watch makers. First thing you do, you take a rotor off without even thinking and then when you complete with overhaul everything is done assembled watch keeps time last thing you do you put your rotor back >> but you don't pay attention where it should be in relation to first reduction uh auto winding wheel.

[00:33:49]>> And that is a problem. Why?

[00:33:51]>> Well, if the ro so this has been designed not just as a product that's going to sit on a desk. It's an organic product in a way that it's on your wrist. So, they have to, if they're smart, design the watch that it's the most efficient in the most used wrist position. So, the three positions that they time in, which is uh this one here, this one here, and then this one here.

[00:34:17]That's I think 70% of the time your wrist is in one of those positions. So if you can get those positions really good, the other positions can be, you know, >> minus 15 seconds, >> but >> but if it's only minus 15 seconds of 5 minutes of the day, who cares, >> you know? So, um, those positions are the important ones. The way that the rotor sits on your wrist in those positions is important because when you're walking, it's only got a little bit of movement. You know, your rotor isn't going all the way around all the time. So, it's most efficient because it has an eccentric pull system.

[00:34:53]>> They grab the the wheel. It's most efficient moving a little bit in that position.

[00:35:00]>> Imagine if you flip the watch upside down.

[00:35:02]>> You now have the least efficient winding position in the most used wrist position. Doesn't make any sense.

[00:35:09]>> It makes perfect sense if you're mechanically minded, especially if you're watch maker. But unless you read the manual, you you don't pay attention to this. Yeah.

[00:35:16]>> Right. This is why reading and referring to manual is crucial before disassembly.

[00:35:20]>> And it's a good thing to check because if if it isn't in position before you work on it, immediately you're like, "Okay, this dude who worked on it before didn't read the manual. So now I'm looking for other things that might be wrong."

[00:35:35]>> Okay. So that that and there are other points. How to adjust hairspring, how to to adjust timekeeping, how to adjust beat error. It's all in a manual. and and how to take a stem out.
