Criminal defense attorneys have a constitutional obligation to represent all clients regardless of the charges, and attacking attorneys for doing their job undermines the principle of equal treatment under the law; the legal system functions best when all parties, including defense attorneys, prosecutors, and juries, fulfill their roles without racial bias or selective outrage.

Why They Attack Black Excellence: The Shaun Kent BacklashAjouté :
So, I just got done defending a pretty high-profile case that I think most of the world knows about. And a lot of folks have been asking a lot of questions, and usually I don't talk about the cases, but in this situation, giving the negative attention and the vitriol and the racist threats and the death messages that myself and my family, I thought I'd address some things. And one of the biggest ones people have asked me is, why would you take on this representation? Now, first, I've been practicing law for over 25 years. Um, here recently and shortly, and actually throughout that entire time, I have represented three African-American males who are accused of raping a little white girl. I have represented an individual who was accused of killing a person, folding his body, and sticking him in an abandoned building in Florence, South Carolina. I have represented a young lady who was accused of killing and drowning her newborn baby. Um I have represented countless individuals who have been accused of criminal sexual conduct. Countless individuals who have been accused of child pornography. Um so represent an individual in Florence who was accused of murder um killing his rival along with her along with his wife um who was also in the car. So there have been countless individuals who I've represented in the past and so when someone says why did you take this case I I don't judge. Uh God judges. If you pick and choose who are you going to judge in your cases, it makes you ineffective of what you're doing. And so people say, "Why this case?" Well, why not any of those ones with the outrage that has come forth? Um, as criminal defense attorneys, we represent the constitution. We represent individuals.
And so when people say comments to me, and I've heard a lot of them like, "You didn't have to take this one." Well, I don't have to pay my mortgage either.
But if you don't, they end up taking that from you. Um, when the individual came to me and requested representation, that's the second thing. Oh, you're just a top. You were just put on the team cuz you're black. I'm pretty [ __ ] good at what I do. And I find it insulted that for someone who would just say the only reason somebody would ask me for representation is because I'm black. If you check and see the things that I do, I am very damn good at what I do. And I'm a very good lawyer. And I will not apologize for being somebody when someone needs they contact and want a good lawyer. And the assumption is which I hate when someone says they want the best lawyer by saying that you're saying the best lawyer can't be African-American.
That's disappointing on our parts. Um as far as the legal defense, when a person comes to us and says the following sentence, look, a gun was pointed at my son. I thought he was going to die, so I fired and shot. That was the legal defense. There was nothing creative.
There was nothing tricky. There was nothing fancy. That was the legal defense. Nothing was hidden. I don't want people to say there was all this great stuff. That was the legal defense.
Um, this was presented to a jury of 12 individuals, seven of which were minorities, who heard that legal defense and said, "Yeah, that makes sense.
I didn't create those facts."
I'm also hearing finally probably most importantly um that there is going to that people are saying we need to boycott Sean Kent not [ __ ] target I'm not um TJ Maxx you're going to boycott me and then someone says we're going to boycott him and we're going to take our problems to a white lawyer okay yeah that'll show me um that we don't need him well enjoy jail enjoy prison boycott me if you will um but I will constantly and always fight for what's right. Um people sending the messages and there have been some very very there have been some creative messages. I guess the number ones are that you have no eyebrows and stuff like that which I know is true. So there have been some very creative messages but there also been some insulting ones and there's been a lot of people who have requested phone calls and I've talked to them. If somebody sends me a message and it's nice and polite and say I just disagree with what you do, I picked up the phone and I've talked to them because I do think a system works better if you have an actual intelligent conversation. I do think there are problems with the way and and let me make this clear. The state of South Carolina did everything that they needed to do in this case.
They tried their damnest to present the case that they wanted to present.
There's some very good lawyers in that office who I respect tremendously and I know they're getting a lot of hate also which I think is unfair because they do what they have to do as do and that's what makes the system work. If we do not fight for everybody equally then the system fails and stops to work. Um, and so, uh, I hate it, you know, and I hate it for the young man's family. I hate it for Cyrus's family. I hate it that a young man died. I 100% do. Um, prosecutors said some stuff that there's a lot of things he is not going to be able to experience in his life, and I and I [ __ ] hate it. I can't control that part. Um, but I do. It saddens me. It saddens me that a young life has been snuffed out entirely too early. And I think whether people believe it or not, the defendant would agree with that. Um, he felt that he was in a situation that something had to be done or his son would be dead. Now, that's his position.
People disagree with it, but that's his position. And a 12 member jury heard that position and said the same. So again, people who are telling me, you know, I'm getting a lot of uh the last one. I can't believe you defended that racist, you [ __ ] [ __ ] racist, you [ __ ] and you rat. And I finally figured out what those little emojis are that you're putting on my page. I guess that's supposed to be a [ __ ] You're a sellout. You're a race.
And I'm just like, am I a sellout by showing the world that you know what?
I'm really good at what I do and I'm going to fight like crazy for you or for anyone else. And so all of the threat messages and all the other situations, I hope down the road if you need a lawyer, someone is there for you and you get a really damn good lawyer, the best one you can be. And I hope someday we get to the point in our society where we say the best lawyers in the world have to be white and not necessarily black or people of color. We start to realize that good lawyers come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And this is the task that we have chosen. This is the job we have chosen. This is the obligation that we have taken on and this is one that I'll take on. Um I hate it though. I hate the hate and I hate the fact that we cannot look past and realize that sometimes people can be good lawyers and still good people.
>> So that was the attorney of Rick Chow who just got off for uh the shooting and killing of the young man Cyrus.
I think it's Carmarmac if I'm I hope hopefully I pronounced the last name right. But he's explaining the fact that he will represent anyone whether they're black, white, or otherwise. He's being fair, which is what black people have asked for through the past is that we want equal treatment. Well, we can't have equal treatment and then desire to not give everybody else equal treatment. That doesn't make sense. We want all this equality, but then we ask from our own people not to give anybody else equality.
That is going to turn a lot of people off. It makes us look ridiculous. It makes us look unsophisticated, like we have low class. These things are not good looks. And yesterday I did a video about public relations of black people. And our public relations campaign is terrible. We got too many people talking and they don't know what they're talking about. They're they're doing us a serious injustice.
Now, what this attorney mentioned is that he has represented many black people who have done a lot of or were accused of doing a lot of terrible things. And he didn't refuse on the basis of morals because when you're acting as an attorney, that's not what you're supposed to do. you know that as an attorney, your job is to defend the constitution, the person's constitutional rights.
You're not, it's not about the morals at this point. You have to defend the constitutional rights. That's that's the objective if you go into law. I guess you have the ability to decide who you want to represent. But if you're in criminal law, I suspect that you have to be thinking, I'm I'm my job is to protect someone's constitutional rights.
Because if you start going the other way, I think you need to get into civil law or something like that. Like it's not it's not for you. You're not built for criminal law if you're if you're trying to make those judgments. That would be my thought. I'm not in law, but if there's anybody who's in law, you can back me up in the comments. Let me know if if I'm correct or not. But I think that if I'm thinking logically that would be the case like you have to go into it being someone who is focused on giving someone the right that every other American has which is the right to, you know, a defense. That's that's what it's about.
And if we're saying that black attorneys can't do that, then we need to say that black people can't be attorneys. Really?
I mean, that's basically what you're saying.
You need to think about that. Again, we this this is a basically an attack on black excellence because this guy obviously did his job in a in an excellent fashion. And now you have black people who would who probably are sitting there with an black excellent shirt on and they're attacking this guy for doing his job in an excellent manner.
Eliminate the fact that you are in your feelings about racism. I guess that's what you think this is. But there's no evidence that this guy was racist. the fact that he he was saying that he's getting death threats and he was been called how could he he was asked how can you represent this racist person. There is zero evidence that that Chia is a racist.
Zero.
The evidence is that he doesn't like shoplifterss.
Not that he doesn't like black people. I mean he obviously has a business located in a black community.
You can say what you want about that. I know a lot of black people have a problem with Asians having businesses in black communities because there should be black people having these businesses.
Well, go build one.
He built one. He built his business there and he's doing business and there have been multiple videos out. Well, I wouldn't say multiple videos. There's one video in particular where he's having to wrestle with these girls who I guess are shoplifting. He's had to deal with shoplifterss before. He's had other altercations that people know about and that people are pushing out there in in in on social media now. So, he's had a whole bunch of these um things going on, right? And so, he's probably frustrated and rightfully so. I said this in the other video. I'll say it again here. There have been lots of black people with businesses, black businesses who have had to shoot black people coming into their business. And nobody who's making these arguments would go after them. In fact, I think that people would applaud those things.
Oh yeah, we he he's just protecting his business. They shouldn't have been doing that stuff. I know what black people say in those circumstances. I know how it goes. But here, because this man is Asian, we have a problem. Uh you you can't you can't be like this black folks. We can't be like this. And certainly we should not be threatening another black person's life because you don't like the outcome of the case that he represented doesn't make sense.
You have to stay consistent. If you love black people, you got to stay consistent. If you really care about black life, you got to stay consistent.
Black people are just inconsistent on these things right now. You're just inconsistent.
You You're not thinking about black people who are being killed by other black people. That [ __ ] is out of your mind. You don't you don't pay any attention to it. You don't care about the black attorney who represented this guy. You're not thinking about his life.
You're not thinking about his wife.
You're not thinking about his children.
None of that. All of that stuff goes out the window for your narrative. You're trying to protect the narrative. You're trying to protect your victimhood status. That's what this is about. You may not see it because it's an unconscious thing, but that is what it is. Because if you be real with yourself, you have to say, "hm, I'm not really caring about other black lives that are being lost on a daily basis. I'm not I'm not going after criminals. I'm not saying, "Hey, we need to stop drill music." I'm not doing a campaign to stop stop black people from rapping about killing one another. I'm not doing any of this kind of stuff. There's nothing that says I care about black lives except the fact that somebody white has taken it or somebody Asian has taken it.
Somebody who's not black has taken it and now I'm enraged.
that that seems to everybody who has half a brain performative.
And the fact that so many black people's eyes glaze over this fact and act they act like this is not something real or it's not actually happening is is is crazy to me. You know, it's it's not logical. It goes beyond logic. People are not acting in a logical fashion. And we need to because the whole world is watching and the whole world is saying these people don't don't they're hypocrites.
They they're not acting in a civilized fashion.
They're having illogical responses that are seemingly like tantrums and performative. We have to stop this stuff. Anyway, don't attack the the attorney. The attorney doesn't deserve the attacks that he's getting. The attorney doesn't deserve any of this kind of stuff. You should congratulate him. He did a good job. He did what he's supposed to do. If you were in a situation, you'd be happy to have an attorney like him representing you. You'd wished for an attorney like that.
What are we doing?
I'm out.
No more ya baza.
