Effective government governance requires direct public engagement through outreach exercises where officials listen to citizen concerns and implement follow-up systems to resolve issues, while diaspora members who have accumulated knowledge abroad should be encouraged to contribute to their home country's development rather than being excluded from national progress.

This is the News Room for Friday, May 29, 2026.Added:
This is the newsroom for Friday, May 29, 2026. We're broadcasting to you on E1, SCAR TV, NTN, and Tarzi TV in Bartika.
In the headlines, Vice President Bar Jagio takes his public outreach exercise to Burbies, meeting residents face tof face as concerns ranging from infrastructure to community development take center stage. Former UN employee Cheryl Noel says overseas gyn helped sustain families and communities for decades and should not be sidelined as the country pushes to build a modern oildriven economy. A quarantine father is demanding justice after his teenage son suffered burns at the Port Morant apprentice's hostel amid allegations of bullying, stolen belongings, and poor security. Police are probing the murder of a 55year-old woman at Cornelia Ida after her body was discovered inside her home and her 24year-old son was taken into custody. And in sport, Eden mobile commits to future warriors tball for primary schools and the Harry Group to back under 19 school cricket league with the news. I am Luziwood. Thanks for joining us. Vice President Dr. Bar Jagio and other cabinet members spent Friday engaging Barbishians directly, listening to their issues and concerns and finding ways to resolve those matters. The public day exercise was one that the vice president has been leading throughout the country and for those on the ground, it's an impetus to better serve communities. Residents of region 6 East Burbast quarantine came out in their numbers to the University of Guyana's tame campus on Friday for a public day activity led by vice president Dr. Barrett Jagio and several cabinet members here. As you walk through the campus, you would see that there were various stations set up organized by ministries and agencies to deal directly with citizens. The vice president has been leading such outreach activities across the country in recent weeks, stating that he's getting down to business now that the campaigning and elections are over.
>> I come here so I have three children and I need my lamb, right? And please help me get anybody else.
>> Yes. honest never help me.
>> I came here to just check up and see what's going on and I've noticed that there's a lot of agencies here from the government and a lot of outreach to the public which is very good >> for Steven Jacobs the minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and a fairly fresh face in communities across the country now that he has assumed this role in government. These activities are important to connect residents with their elected leaders.
When you sit in the chair that we sit in as ministers, as president, as vice president, our main goal and objective is to make sure the people of Ghana try and be prosperous and we have an opportunity here when we come and speak to them to find solutions for them right on ground.
And that is something that they show great appreciation for is resolving issues on the ground but also following up and receiving feedback and then it is measuring all of the issues that may arise. So you may come to region 6 in 2026 and you will hear about housing issues. You come back to region 6 later in 2026 and you hear you might hear a different story. It tells us something underground what's happening what are the issues because previously in in years before like I just spoke to one of my colleagues you would have heard that there's a situation with jobs you're not hearing that on the ground so when we we come and we listen on the ground and then we act and that is important >> for the new regional executive officer Ronald Harawok he thinks that such activities are important and they help to encourage local leaders to work even harder.
>> We see many of the problems sadly are localized problems that we need to ensure that the local organs um fix these problems so they can continue to bring relief and service um to the people. So my focus would be primarily working with these local areas to build their capacity um modernize the way we do things at the regional democratic um council um the use of of technology and everything else that we have at the disposal to bring it in to ensure that we speed up the way we do things here in government.
>> You know that's one of the things we always hear when you come to these public open days. Of course they're great. They allow citizens to interact directly with their elected officials, but there's also that afterthought that if the local systems really work, you wouldn't necessarily have to do these.
How do you specifically improve systems here? What what are some of the specific things you're targeting?
>> So, so exactly. So, what we have had traditionally is I don't want to say a lack of, but a laxity of follow-up with issues. Somebody comes to a government office whether it's an NDC, whether it's the RDC, the Department of Health, they log a complaint, somebody takes that complaint to 50%. Does not necessarily take it to the other office. So we need to take it to 100%. It remains in someone's desk, it remains in someone's phone and that problem escalates and it brews to something bigger and hence people lose confidence in the system.
People lose confidence with the way we do things within the region. Um so we intend as a regional administrator to ensure that there's monitoring that there's tracking the use of the apps that we have available through the NDMA simple things as Google sheets we're going to use to track these issues and of course we do daily I do daily debriefing on issues from the previous day. So those are the some of the things that we would would employ to ensure that we we try to capture as much of these complaints and respond to these complaints. These outreach activities are expected to continue in communities across region 6 and across the country in the weeks ahead. Reporting for the newsroom from Burbies, I'm Brashanti Ragir.
As Guyana pushes to build a modern economy fueled by oil wealth and rapid development, the government has been calling on overseas-based GY to return home and help shape the country's future. But should gyn who left decades ago have a seat at the table in the new Guyana? In this episode of Back Home Brief, former United Nations employee Cheryl Noel believes the answer is yes, arguing that the diaspora never stopped contributing and now brings valuable global experience the country urgently needs. No one complained when we were sending remittances, Noel says. Why reject people who want to give back?
>> There are thousands of gines who went abroad for whatever reason, whether it's their families migrated, whether it's for political reasons, whether it's because they need they wanted a better chance at life, but have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge that other countries are benefiting from. Why would you cut off your nose to spoil your face by saying you cannot contribute because you didn't stick?
I left Guyana in 1983.
The reason why I stayed uh was because I was offered a job at the United Nations.
But Cheryl, there are persons who stayed in Guyana, who did not leave, and who would say now that, you know, you left, they stayed, they toiled, and you're not entitled to come back now when Guyana is um flourishing to benefit or to be entitled to anything.
They can say whatever they want to, but as I said, you don't throw away your family members just because it in it's not even an inconvenience to you because there's nothing that I see that anyone is getting that makes someone who stayed get less. Okay? And no one was complaining when we were contributing um through our remittances. Nobody complained when we sent your children to school, when we helped you build your homes, when we helped to to to do things in the community. No one complained about our money or the way we were contributing then. And that's that's in the tune of millions of you, you know, dollars. And so whatever little thing that a few gines who come home um participating in terms of what the government may be giving, no one should begrudge them. Right.
>> The very fact that we left gave us an opportunity to to gain knowledge >> and I think that knowledge is invaluable and and also when you have a countryman contributing in any profession or field of you know endeavor any of those you come with with a longing to contribute.
It's not just I'm coming for a paycheck or you know there's something that you want to give back to your country. It's not just about a paychecks there. the population of Ghana um is not large enough to develop this country in a way that would in as rapidly as we ought to be doing right now because of the advancement in technology AI etc. Right.
We have gy abroad who have that knowledge and can contribute right now.
>> We don't have it's not like they have to go to four years of college to get it.
You can you can gy the gy government and the people of Ghana can access that information immediately, >> right? You just have to create um an environment in which people feel that what they're bringing is appreciated and and that you're not seen as a as an outsider, right? Cuz you're Chinese and I think no one says to an American, you're no longer an American just because you know you lived or worked abroad. No one ever questions their their nationality or their rights to contribute to the betterment of their country.
A quarantine father is demanding answers after his 18-year-old son suffered burns to his face, shoulder, and chest while staying at the Port Morant apprentices hostel. Triml Nobel, who is enrolled in a sugar boiler training program, said he woke up in pain late Friday night and discovered his bed and room soaked, raising suspicions that hot water may have been thrown on him. The teenager claims the incident follows months of troubling experiences at the hostel, including stolen phones, damaged belongings, and previous acts of alleged bullying. His father has since reported the matter to the police and is calling for a full investigation and stronger security measures at the facility.
>> I also had three glasses that well the first glasses they broke and they said that they didn't know how it broke. The second one they broke it as well. And couple weeks before I went to uplift uplift my new glasses and Saturday when I went back I couldn't find the glasses.
You also stole three phones from me.
>> Did you um complain about the phones?
>> Yes, I complained. I made um complain about the phones. They did a search but they couldn't find any of the three phones.

When I went to the security, asked the security if you can call Miss Wade.
As he was calling his kid, I turned and I asked him what time it was. He said it was 12:5.
After calling Miss then and she answered, I left and I went back to the city where she called the um the medic. The medic wasn't here cuz she the Friday.
So when she called the medics, the medic appro so I can head over to dispensary the Saturday morning.
So after I had gone to Miss Wade, she put me to sleep somewhere different from where I was sleeping before. When I got up the next morning, I went over to the dispensary. When I went over to the dispens, they referred me to the portant public hospital where I received an injection for the pain and then return back to the dispensary for my medication.
When returning to the hospital, the boys at the hospital were talking.
They were saying look how they born with white teeth and after my aunt came and while me and my aunt were standing outside one of the boys turn and said noble noble you guys live with us. My aunt then proceeded to complain to Miss and when Miss called the person said that he would never say something like that.
When you return to the um hostel after I went to the hospital, >> you had any issue with anyone in there?
>> No. Have you had any issue with anyone?
I don't know.

GPHC says the changes are aimed at delivering a higher standard of health care for citizens. The hospital says the ongoing developments signal what it describes as a new era for public healthare Indiana.
>> How much money can you say has been invested into the George Hospital over the past uh 5 years? And where are where has that investment been more visible and impactful? Um over the last 5 years with that was excluding 2026 there have been $85.2 billion.
Um a lot of that money is spending on our staff. Um we have a high payroll approximately a billion dollar um a month. We have um over 2500 staff and we are still short. Mhm.
>> Um but we have highly technical skilled staff and with all the salary increase over the last 5 years has really raised the um the wage. But in terms of where it is impactful you can see where the impact in in a lot of um training post-graduate training we right now we have 21 post-graduate training that is being done at the hospital. for doctors and nurses. Um in collaboration with University of Guyana and several universities abroad like u McMaster um University of Calgary um University of Vanderbilt many of them. So we are partnering training um our staff heavily um so that they can meet the needs of our people in specialized care and also investing in a lot of state-of-the-art equipment. Mhm.
>> There are equipment that we have at Georgetown Hospital that are not even in the Caribbean. Um, so a lot of those have been on infrastructural improvement. I always said once we give the people the tools, they shouldn't complain. Now what we have to do is work on the human resource aspect to deliver that service to the people that they need.

We start things off with some cricket news. Exon Mobile Guyana is set to continue its heavy investment in youth development and grassroots sports through the fourth edition of the future Warriors table tournament for primary schools. Marking its fourth year of a highly successful partnership with FL sport, the tournament serves as a premier platform for exposing young talent to structured cricket across the nation while promoting lifelong values of teamwork and sportsmanship.
>> Sports is so important in a child's life and here's why. It teaches you discipline. It teaches you cooperation.
cooperation through teamwork and it will definitely I don't want to use the word unleash but harness a talent that you may not know that you ever have possessed before. So it's a wonderful wonderful thing.
Pricket is also and I say this to you because you're in an exciting time. the president who you all know is a very energetic individual and so everything he does exist.
So when he decided he was going to revamp the Ministry of Culture and Sports with policies and projects and I'll explain some of that to you now is that he created the environment for the development of sports. And so cricket is no longer just a sport that you know.
You have many other sports that are also developing.
>> We also want to be a part of the community.
So what does that mean? Well, it means doing things like this. We want to bring our values and our support to things that are important to the development of the country and sport. And I I love sport. I love to to see sport as a way to develop community. indeed as a way to develop each of us because it teaches us discipline, teaches us how to work in a team. It teaches us a whole lot of life skills that will help set you up to be a leader in your community, a leader at your school, but also a leader when you go into working.
>> I would also like to congratulate Exom Mobilebile for picking up that mantle and for being with you as a as a sponsor. It is very difficult for us to move in any direction if we do not have backing and Exom Mobile has been your backing but also the government of Guyana has been your backing too and just last year you know I must smile about this even though the Anorina ground was not officially open the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and by extension the government of Guayana would have allowed you to use that that that venue and this year you return to that venue also. So uh we are playing our part also and it shows just how important that the government and private sector partnership is if we are to take sport forward. We remain determined to keep this program growing, not only to help develop future Ghana Amazon warriors for GSL and CPL, but more importantly to help our young boys and girls recognize and achieve their full potential.
I'd like to recognize as well the importance that schools have been playing in including female players and of course you're seeing as well a number of female coaches here today. Give yourselves a round of applause please.
That's experience.
>> Cool cricket in Ghana is set for a massive shot in the arm with the unveiling of the Bihari group of companies schools under 19 T20 league.
The inaugural tournament organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Guyana looks to revitalize grassroots cricket and provide a crucial competitive platform for the country's emerging youth talent. Today marks the beginning of what we hope will become one of Guyana's premier youth sporting events and an important platform for nurturing the next generation of cricketers leaders and citizens.
For almost 90 years, the Bihari Group has been deeply rooted in the development of Guyana. Our story has always been about more than business. It has been about investing in people, supporting communities, creating opportunities, and contributing to national development.
>> Zone one will feature teams from region one and region two. And in total, that would be 10 teams.
In zone two would feature teams from region three and region 7, that would be nine teams.
Zone three would feature East Bank Demorara along with Upper Demorara which will have seven schools in that zone. In the fourth zone we have South Georgetown featuring eight um 10 schools sorry.
North Georgetown 12 schools.
Sixth the sixth zone would be east coast featuring 10 schools.
West Barbies which is the seventh zone featuring six schools and the final zone and the biggest um East Barbies quarantine featuring 14 schools. So in a total we have 80 schools across the country featuring in this grand tournament.
>> I want to welcome you to this national secondary school cricket tournament. A tournament that we really needed in Guyana for a secondary school. This tournament is an important part of cricket development in Guyana to provide young athletes from across the country with the opportunity to showcase their skills, talent and to build character and develop their skills.
And in order to have this tournament possible, we would like to thank the Bihari group of companies for their value, sponsorship and commitment towards youths and sports development in Guyana. The Exen Mobile Guano Super League is actively exploring avenues to integrate young GY cricketers into the tournament's ecosystem through mentorship attachments. Tournament director Jamie Stewart has revealed while stopping short of a formal commitment for the upcoming season.
Stuart confirmed that providing development pathways for local youth is under serious consideration and remains firmly in the pipeline. The initiative aims to embed emerging local talent within the various franchise setups, allowing them to train alongside and learn from established international stars. Given the rapid evolution of the T20 franchise landscape, the opportunity for uncapped players to rub shoulders with worldclass professionals is increasingly seen as a crucial stepping stone for regional development. The GSL is set to return for its third edition from July 23 to August 1 with four champion teams from different global leagues arriving in Guyana to challenge the home franchise, the Ghana Amazon Warriors at the National Stadium in Providence.
>> You know, that's a great idea and it's certainly an ambition and in fact, I'll be having a meeting to that effect um before I leave. I'm leaving on the weekend. So, it's something I think is going to happen this year, but I can't um 100% confirm it. But it's certainly something that um is very much in our in our thinking. The Global Super League is very much an event for Guyana as much as possible. We're in looking to ensure it's delivered by uh the people of Guyana. Um we're very much focused on that the event should be a catalyst for knowledge transfer um uplift of uh young gy people and exposure you know to the uh the sports industry at at the highest level. Um it's very much part of the mission of the the league. Um and I think you know as the event grows it's here to stay. Uh it's it's probably the flagship if you think about it the flagship global sports event for Guyana from from Guyana. Um and we looking to continue to grow it over the over the next few years. I hope the fans they came out last year when the Warriors made the charge to the title. Uh really looking forward to seeing the fans get out there and and supporting the Warriors as they take on the best the world has to offer. The Guyana Football Federation GFF has taken another significant step toward the professionalization of its domestic game partnering with regional governing body KONAF to host a comprehensive club licensing workshop.
The session staged at the Gana Olympic Association headquarters on Wednesday brought together elite league club presidents, secretaries, and specialized comet platform users. The primary objective centered on tightening administrative structures, sharpening governance, and ensuring local clubs meet stringent international standards.
>> Our goal, and we're working very closely with Conquer, Kath, and FIFA, is to see the elite league evolve into a professional league.
Yes, you're going to say to me, President, we need more investment. Of course, we need more investment. And believe you me when I say we are doing everything within our power to generate those investments. And we're hoping that season 8 can be just as his well even more historical as the experiences that we've had in season 7. I think we can all attest season 7 was the greatest season for the league in terms of engagement with fans, visibility of the of the league. We checked many, many, many key boxes for season 7 and I believe we're now going to only meet those expectations, we're going to exceed them. But with all of that, we still have to focus on the governance side of football.
So, I'm hoping that over the next two days that you will be involved in this workshop, you'll be able to take away valuable pieces of information that will benefit you in your continued effort to professionalize the operations of your clubs.
So, let me just wish you a successful club licensing workshop and uh I do expect to see you engaging the members of my team even more and helping us to help you. Let us know where we can do more, where we can help. We just don't want to have a piece of paper reflecting all the key things that you ought to be doing and bring no life to that piece of paper. We want to bring life to the club licensing initiative that is so critical for the growth of the game. Help us to help you. We've been reaching out. We've been talking to you. If there is anything more that we can do, please let us know. My team are here to assist. And of course, as you all may know, I'm always at the end of a phone. if there is something that I can personally do.
