Not only did we have the end of slavery as an institution, we had the emergence of the independence [music] of women for the first time in American history, perhaps in Western history including Western Europe. Women were now able to assert their own economic independence. In addition to that, we had the beginning of [music] the end of the feudal system, the migration from back-breaking subsistence farming 10 to 12 hours a day, [music] 6 to 7 days a week to the daily eight wages of the factory work.
