First Alert Weather Extra: Lahaina Noon takes place in Hawaii本站添加:
Well, take a look at this right here at the Lahaina Noon. Happened in Hawaii earlier this week. This rare solar event happens when the sun passes directly over the islands at a 90° angle. The occurrence causes upright objects like flagpoles and street signs to cast no shadow. The Lahaina Noon happens twice a year and only in the tropics.
>> All right, it's Thursday. We got updates on the drought monitor.
Uh and there's been some minor change compared to last week.
>> minor change. Uh you know, we're going to start with a zoomed out view here to talk a bit about the region as a whole.
Uh specifically to talk about the severe drought the North Shore of Massachusetts and to parts of New Hampshire near Lake Winnipesaukee and up into what's the York County, Maine. Uh that severe drought continues to be an issue and then to our southwest severe drought into extreme drought as you get into the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. But, let's focus in on Connecticut. What has changed here? Well, last week when we got the update to the drought monitor, southern Middlesex County was included in that moderate drought area. So, that stretched from uh Clinton through Westbrook and all the way even into New London County through East Lyme. Now, we have seen a slight reduction in where that moderate drought area is. Southwestern Connecticut and the rest of the state remain unchanged with the moderate drought throughout Fairfield County uh and abnormally dry conditions elsewhere. We've been keeping tabs on our rainfall deficits. This is for the Hartford area. We've picked up just over 3 in of rain so far this month and uh we'll add a little bit to this tally. Mark will have much more on that in just a moment.
Since meteorological spring began all the way back on March 1st, we've picked up over 10 and 1/2 in of rain or the liquid equivalent of anything frozen and over 15 in uh 15 and 1/2 in since the year began.
And while these numbers aren't too far off from where we might typically be, we are still looking at deficits. We also want to mention that we will have a a look back at meteorological spring as the new season kicks off on Monday, June 1st. But, it's not just the Hartford area, it's Bridgeport, too, and the deficits in Bridgeport are even larger, especially if you go back to the start of the year, about a 3 and 1/2 in deficit compared to normal. And the last year, Bridgeport had an even larger deficit. So, over time, these deficits build. So, while you might notice the soil is a bit damp, the ground water is still needs to be replenished, and we really could use a bit more in the way of rainfall. Looking into the future here, the day 8 to 14 outlook, 8 to 14-day outlook, there we go. Uh so, this would be uh June 5th through the 11th, showing that things are going to be drier than average, leaning drier than average in the eastern part of the state. So, uh this pattern appears like it's going to favor things running a bit drier than normal, and maybe warmer than normal in that same time frame, too. And the issue with this combination this time of year is that the sun is so strong that it helps to evaporate the water more efficiently. So, when we end up in these situations where we're already leaning on things being a bit drier than normal, and we end up with stretches of sunshine, well, sometimes that can make things happen uh even a bit more quickly and exacerbate the issues a bit. We won't be talking too much about sunshine on Saturday, though.
At least we'll get to enjoy part of the weekend. Mark, we'll have much more on that right now. Mark?
>> Yeah, by Saturday, we're going to need an extra layer because temperatures will be running well below average with a wind that makes them feel even a little bit chillier. So, more on that coming up in just a moment. Right now, on the state's only live radar here tracking uh some lingering lone showers about to exit coastal southeast Connecticut as they head into the sound. Uh right now, moving through Stonington. Uh just a quick little downpour there. Conversely, the other corner of the state, throughout Litchfield County, mainly clear, just a few scattered clouds from my camera in Torrington. A nice thing coming in from Waterbury.
What you can take note of here is the trees, the leaves moving around, the wind sustained out of the north-northwest at 13. We still here in the 6:00 hour have some gusts up to say 25 to 30, 35 mph. And uh looking live from Hartford currently, 30 uh 70° in our capital city, northwind at 17. And from New Haven, again, a nice view here, uh some scattered clouds. From New London, you can see the clouds here on the left-hand side of your screen uh with the downpour that's currently currently moving through Stonington. So, uh 65, a bit of a calmer wind there. So, uh regardless, we are cooler than this time yesterday, 5 to 8° cooler along the shoreline, 10 to 15° cooler, and also, of course, less humid compared to this time yesterday inland. Uh statewide, basically, between 65 and 70. The warm spot uh Bridgeport right now at 72. And as Mike outlined earlier with the daytime heating, these showers popping up, the colder air aloft, the instability. Now that we're working towards sunset, uh the atmosphere stabilizing, showers diminishing, cloud cover is eroding. So, as the cloud cover erodes, temperatures drop through the 60s this evening, then eventually into the 50s. And for many of us tonight, we we bottom out between 50 and 55. Mildest along the shoreline, coolest across the northwestern hill towns. That's where we could even see some upper 40s uh for overnight lows. Uh tomorrow for our Friday, 70 to 75. Bright to start, then clouds increase with a chance for some late-day showers. All uh compliments of this disturbance moving out of Canada across New England. So, some more meaningful rain falls just to the north and northeast of Connecticut. And we'll stop the clock at 7:00 on Saturday morning as the low is exiting, and temperatures perhaps could be cold enough to support even some snow uh on the last Saturday of May just to our north and perhaps the higher terrain of Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire. And then that low moves farther away as we get into Sunday. So, the wind is also going to be an issue.
We could get some gusts up to, if not over, 30 mph. And note those wind arrows uh coming out of the north. So, that's going to send that cooler air in our direction. Temperatures by the afternoon only reaching the upper 50s and lower 60s. So, Saturday, Hartford Athletic have a home game uh at Trinity Health Stadium. Temperature slowly dropping through the 50s as the evening moves forward with a bit of a clearing sky.
We'll have much more on the rest of the weekend and beyond as we start the month of June next week. That's all coming up, Erin.
>> Okay, Mark. Thank you very much. Tough times could be on the horizon for some farmers in America's heartland. Weather conditions have created a weak crop that's expected to be the worst in more than 50 years for Kansas. This year's wheat production is forecast to drop 21% from last year. It could be the smallest wheat crop in the country since 1972.
Farmers say hotter and hotter weather has made matters worse. The dry conditions have also pushed harvest earlier than normal. According to the USDA, more than half of the wheat crop in Kansas is currently rated poor or very poor.
