In July 1961, the Soviet nuclear submarine K-19 suffered a catastrophic reactor failure during training exercises in the North Atlantic, with eight crew members volunteering to enter the deadly radiation zone to repair the cooling system; despite their heroic sacrifice that saved the submarine and prevented a potential nuclear war, all eight men died within weeks from radiation poisoning, and the Soviet government court-martialed the captain while denying the incident for decades.

Soviet Sub Crew Sacrificed Lives to Prevent Nuclear War - K-19 DisasterAñadido:
Did you know a Soviet submarine crew once nicknamed their own vessel Hiroshima? In July 1961, the K-19 nuclear submarine was conducting training exercises in the North Atlantic. Then the reactor started leaking. Deadly radiation flooded the engine compartment. The cooling system had failed completely. Without repairs, the reactor would melt down. The submarine carried nuclear torpedoes. An explosion could trigger World War III.
Eight crew members volunteered to enter the contaminated compartment. They knew it was a death sentence. Working in shifts, they welded pipes with their bare hands. The radiation was so intense their bodies began breaking down immediately. They saved the submarine, but the price was horrific. Within hours the men were vomiting blood. Their skin turned black and peeled off in sheets.
Some went blind. All eight died in agony over the following weeks. Captain Zateyev managed to save his remaining crew by surfacing near American ships.
The Soviets court-martialed him for it.
For decades, Moscow denied the incident ever happened. The K-19 disaster remains one of the closest nuclear calls in human history.
