[00:00:02]Traditional concrete production is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions on the planet. To fix this, marine engineers are looking to the sea.

[00:00:11]By running a mild electrical current through a steel frame submerged in seawater, they trigger a chemical reaction that pulls dissolved minerals out of the water. Over time, these minerals accumulate and crystallize, literally growing a solid rock structure over the frame. This bio cement is not only stronger than traditional concrete, but it also absorbs carbon instead of emitting it. Even more incredibly, if the structure cracks, the continuous electrical current causes new minerals to grow and seal the damage.
