1700 years before Christ, a scribe in ancient Babylon pressed his reed stylus into wet clay. He was solving something that wouldn't appear in Europe for a thousand years. The square root of two calculated to six decimal places. Tablet YBC 7289 still preserved at Yale University. The value etched into that clay 1.414213 accurate to the sixth decimal place.
Pythagoras wouldn't be born for another millennium.
Babylon was already there.
