[00:00:22]Now, guys, if you don't know anything about us at Mr. Maple, we're a family-owned business. We ship directly to your door. And we have the largest selection of Japanese maples in the country.

[00:00:30]Guys, we got tons of trees in every greenhouse and lots of varieties.

[00:00:34]Uh right here, selection by Talon Buchholz, it's called Grandma Ghost. It has a really nice divided leaf with serrated edges, but the serrated edges aren't as deeply divided as Sister Ghost. This has a reticulation where we see some strong veining in the early spring.

[00:00:51]>> [snorts] >> We see a little bit of that veining here in some of this newer growth, but this is going to be uh really pronounced in the springtime and more pronounced outside. I mean, we're in a filming this, and it's July right now when we're filming this of uh 2026 in our cold frames.

[00:01:08]It's probably 80° outside, but it's probably 95 in here. The temperature really takes out some of the colors. So, there's some things you'll really get to see what can really perform well in that high heat setting.

[00:01:21]Now, over here, this isn't a Japanese maple, but this is a Stewartia pseudocamellia called 'Peuter'.

[00:01:27]Now, Peuter is a Japanese Stewartia that has some pewter uh color to the foliage.

[00:01:33]It'll get some bluish silver color to the foliage. The bark as it ages looks almost like a crepe myrtle.

[00:01:39]And you'll see the seed pods on here.

[00:01:41]These were blooms like a camellia.

[00:01:42]That's where you get that pseudocamellia name. So, it has like these camellia-like blooms that turn into these seed pods. Um So, I'm pretty cool.

[00:01:50]Some 3-gallons here of a really cool Japanese Stewartia.

[00:01:55]Now, as we're coming down through here, I'm starting to see some cool 1 gallons of Acer palmatum Lima Gold.

[00:02:02]Now, this is a dense dwarf Japanese maple selection that was in the um evaluation for uh at Dick Wolf's of Red Maple Nurseries. He introduced Emperor 1, Moonfire, Red Baron, Green Mist.

[00:02:20]He is actually the one that uh named Shayna after Billy Schwartz's uh daughter and co-introduced that with Billy Schwartz into the trade.

[00:02:31]Um Lima Gold is a dense makawa-like growing Japanese maple with really small foliage.

[00:02:37]Uh he gave the original seedling to Ed Shen in Wall, New Jersey.

[00:02:41]And Ed um was able to share sign wood with people.

[00:02:48]Now, this is we call it Lima Gold, but it's actually probably Lima Gold and named after Lima, Pennsylvania, >> [snorts] >> where the original Red Maple Nurseries um was from. But, this is a cool little dwarf compact form 4x4. That's really awesome.

[00:03:02]Now, just coming down through here, now we've got some Golden Falls right here.

[00:03:08]Let me turn this around here. Sorry about that.

[00:03:11]We got some Acer palmatum Golden Falls.

[00:03:14]Golden Falls selected by Talon Buchholz is one of the most heat tolerant yellow weeping Japanese maples in the trade today.

[00:03:21]Uh extremely pendulous, good yellow color.

[00:03:25]And the J.Z. Ralston has grown this in full sun in Raleigh, North Carolina without a problem.

[00:03:31]To me, it's one of the best heat tolerant weeping yellows in the trade today.

[00:03:37]Guys, as you can see down through here, there's a lot of cool plants.

[00:03:41]One of the plants that I didn't really appreciate until I started till I purchased Buchholz and I really started seeing its uses are these uh Japanese forest grasses.

[00:03:52]These things can give some great colors at the bases of your Japanese maples and contrast well with your red uprights.

[00:03:59]Uh Buckholz so they've used this uh Talon used this quite a bit at plantings underneath some giant Beni Hoshis and some other cool plants.

[00:04:06]This one here is all gold which has the complete golden foliage.

[00:04:12]And then we'll look over here at our Areola or Areola. Uh that's one that has the variegated with the green and gold.

[00:04:20]Uh but both give you some good yellow color out there.

[00:04:23]Now on the left here we've got Hydrangea Oamachi Nishiki.

[00:04:27]That's a mountain hydrangea that has beautiful lace cap blooms. They can be purple to uh to blue to pink depending on the pH of the soil.

[00:04:37]But it has this variegation. It's just this like molting like variegation which is really cool. Love the foliage in these hydrangeas.

[00:04:43]Over here Katsura, the harbinger of one of the harbingers of spring.

[00:04:47]That leafs out in the spring with a really beautiful yellow color uh with an orange border.

[00:04:53]Uh one of the first trees to leaf out in the spring in the garden.

[00:04:57]Now on the left over here we have Abigail Rose.

[00:05:02]Uh this has a Higasayama-like variegation.

[00:05:05]Typically in 10 years in most climates 4x5 in 10 years. I have seen some really hot climates where these may get up to 8 ft um if like in the perfect location. But it's typically a round ball shape. The original tree wasn't was over 30 years old when I saw it and it was no taller than 8 ft tall. Um it has a really nice uh pink color in the spring with reticulation because it has a Higasayama-like variegation.

[00:05:33]Selection by Harold Johnson down in Alabama. It's super heat tolerant and super durable.

[00:05:39]On the left here we've got Acer Japonicum or on the right here Acer Japonicum Giant Moon. Uh Giant Moon you can get some really nice kind of new growth flashes on it which are nice.

[00:05:51]But it has this larger rounded leaf which is pretty cool.

[00:05:58]And it really has a nice just crisp leaf to it.

[00:06:02]It's just really showy.

[00:06:04]The japonica's give a good texture out there in the landscape. And this one gives you some really nice yellows, oranges, and reds in the fall.

[00:06:11]Now I mentioned Harold Johnson earlier.

[00:06:14]His wife was Johnny Johnson.

[00:06:16]His name of his nursery was Johnny's Pleasure Plants.

[00:06:20]Named after his wife. Well, this is Johnny's Pink. Johnny's Pink leaves out in the spring as a bright pink. It's fairly heat tolerant, 8 ft by 8 ft in 10 years. But that spring color is really what this tree gets its name from. It's just that intense coral pink spring color. This [snorts] plant, like I said, it's from southern Alabama near the Florida line.

[00:06:43]It's extremely heat tolerant and really durable.

[00:06:47]On this side over here we've got some 1 gallons of Koto No Ito.

[00:06:50]Koto No Ito, known as Japanese Harp String, will often have this new growth here that's a little bit wi- wider during the summer. The older growth is more stringy. And as you can see down here, that's very typical. That's what we call irregular summer new growth. And this larger growth that you see here will actually return to the stringier growth you see here next year when it leaves out. So in the spring [snorts] it'll leaf out and almost all be like this.

[00:07:17]And new growth flashes in the summer are always a little bit wider.

[00:07:21]Japanese Harp String is 8 to 10 ft in 10 years, oranges in the fall.

[00:07:26]A pretty cool selection.

[00:07:29]Now I say a lot of names over and over is because some people have really made big impacts on Japanese maples. Like right here is a selection by Talon Buchholz called Tiny Stars.

[00:07:38]Tiny Stars has these little star-like shaped leaves.

[00:07:42]And it's an upright tree, 8 ft in 10 years, and it goes to a a bright reds in the fall, but each of these leaves, especially on the summer flush, have that star-shaped leaf, but they're even tiny on that summer flush. You can sort of see that happening here.

[00:07:59]See my hand in here? You can sort of see the size difference of the foliage.

[00:08:03]Uh tiny stars, definitely a cool upright Japanese maple, newer selection that got introduced about the same time as Celebration, Pastel, and um some cool Japanese maples.

[00:08:16]Right here, this is a pretty fun one.

[00:08:17]This is Ruby Lace Sophia, found by one of my friends.

[00:08:20]It was found as a seedling he bought that was uh a Rising Star seedling that Talon sold to a local garden center.

[00:08:27]And um it has a hooking, twisting habit that is pretty cool. Um Ruby Lace Sophia gives you the pastel-like colors, where you get some really pastel pinks and ambers in the spring, and then it goes to creams, but it is a reticulate Japanese maple like that Grandma Ghost that we mentioned earlier.

[00:08:50]Right through here, we've got some Acer palmatum Oranjola, possibly one of my most popular trees that I offer today.

[00:08:57]I love when you get those orange colors just popping across the greens. Early spring, you get lots of orangey reds.

[00:09:05]Sunlight will actually pick up the colors. These are in 55% shade and in the high heat, which will wash it out the most, but I mean, this summertime frame when you start seeing these orange pinks just start popping across Oranjola over the top of the green red is possibly one of my favorite times to enjoy Oranjola.

[00:09:20]It has one of the most cascading habits of any true laceleaf. Um I mean, it's amazing, beautiful tree to have out there in the garden.

[00:09:30]Now, Kurushima is a fun tree.

[00:09:32]On a Kurushima, the leaves curl upward, and let's see if I can't focus in so you can sort of see how these leaves the lobes curl upward on this. Uh it looks almost like it needs water, but I mean this thing is a a beautiful selection.

[00:09:45]It goes to some bold oranges in the fall as well. Uh this is a really really amazing Japanese maple that I think more people need to be growing. It's got a nice vase shape overall.

[00:09:56]And uh just a a pretty cool selection.

[00:10:00]At Mr. Maple you saw me talk about many other plants. You'll see some figs there. We've offered them at Mr. Maple.

[00:10:05]Over here [snorts] are some uh azalea selections. These are Golden Lights. Um Golden Lights and right beside of them are uh Western Lights. Uh both of those are selections by the University of Minnesota of cold tolerant essentially deciduous azaleas that are hybrids with natives to give us some amazing colors like Golden Lights give you yellow blooms yellow trusses of blooms.

[00:10:31]And Western Lights can give you just some amazing colors out there that are extremely cold tolerant can do well in regular zones but also those cold zones like the University of Minnesota is um for people that really enjoy deciduous azaleas.
