Obscure Bird Grasshopper: It's One of the Big Ones!

The obscure bird grasshopper (Schistocerca obscura) is one of North America's largest grasshoppers, growing up to 2.5 inches long with males being about one-third smaller than females; it is green with brown wings and a bright yellow stripe, prefers semi-open grassy areas like prairies and pastures, ranges from the Rocky Mountains to the east coast, and while not typically a significant pest, experienced major population outbreaks following the 1930s Dust Bowl that caused crop and plant damage.
