Real event OCD and false memory OCD are severe conditions where individuals become trapped in obsessive replaying of memories, believing they did something terrible or are a bad person; the core problem is not the memory itself but the brain's inability to let it go and its poor response to uncertainty, which leads to ruminating, checking, and confessing behaviors; effective treatment involves exposure therapy where individuals write out the story exactly as it happened and read it back while responding to any threatening thoughts with 'maybe, maybe not,' thereby teaching the brain that this memory is dangerous but does not require solving, ultimately helping them stop chasing certainty and live their lives.

Real event OCD and false memory OCD are brutal
Added:Real event OCD and false memory OCD are brutal. Your brain convinces you that you did something terrible or maybe you did and now you just can't stop replaying it. Either way, you're stuck.
Ruminating, checking, confessing, trying to figure out if you're a bad person.
Here's what keeps you stuck. You think if you just review it one more time, you'll finally know. You'll gain clarity. But that's actually the problem, not the thing that you did or what you think you did. The problem is that your brain won't let it go and it's responding poorly to it. You're teaching your brain, "Okay, this memory is dangerous. We need to solve it." But there is no answer. So, what do we do with this darn thing? We do exposures.
We write out the story exactly how it happened as if it's happening right now in this moment. And what we do is we read that story and as I'm reading it, any threat that comes to my mind, I'm answering it with a maybe maybe not.
You're not trying to gain certainty.
You're teaching your brain, "Okay, this memory is dangerous. We need to solve it." Go live your life. That's what this is all about.
