HOME SECRETARY RETURNS TO OFFICE | UK IMMIGRATION REFORMS FOR ILR | WHAT ARE IMMIGRANTS SAYING!

[00:00:02]Hey guys, welcome back to the YouTube channel. So yesterday, the 20th of July 2026, the new UK Prime Minister Anne Bonna, you know, got into office and made his first appointment for his cabinet. And couple of the ministers obviously had to leave government with the previous Prime Minister. However, one of the cabinet member that stayed is the current Home Secretary Suella Braverman. And there's been lots of questions around, you know, the government's plan for keeping her as the Home Secretary, if there's plan to implement couple of these changes that has been proposed for immigration, um especially with settlements, um asylum seekers, among many other things that has been proposed as changes to immigration policy come autumn 2026. And there's a lot of conversation really.

[00:00:52]And just yesterday also, the Home Secretary posted on uh you know, social media page. And as you can see on the screen, she says, "It's an honor to remain as the Home Secretary um in Anne Bonna's cabinet. I may be biased, but it is the best job in the business. We have begun the work of major reforms to make our streets safer and our immigration system fair for all.

[00:01:18]Now, let's finish the job." Now, if you check out her, you know, social media page, there were loads of different comments in here, which we're going to look at shortly. However, one thing that, you know, is quite clear is the fact that, you know, and if you listen to a couple of interviews granted by the current Prime Minister Anne Bonna, he made it clear with the fact that he is in support of some of the immigration policies being proposed by the Home Secretary. I mean, he's mentioned her name a couple of time. So, it's expected that she will probably be, you know, part of his cabinet as the new UK Prime Minister. However, the question on if there's a possibility that some of those immigration reforms might be you know softened or probably completely scrapped is still hope for conversation. So we really don't know what the you know the current Prime Minister's plan is as regards especially for the indefinite leave to remain. Now so there's going to be a couple of changes some of those you know policies especially for settled immigrants might be a little bit you know watered down unnecessarily or probably you know adjusted a bit to make sure it's fair. However, if you go to the comment section of our page you're just going to see how people are sharing their thoughts on [snorts] couple of things that she's planning to do. Now let's have a quick look at couple of the comments on this you know post she made. Now someone said immigrants are assets not a burden when given the chance to contribute. They shouldn't be used for political gain.

[00:02:50]They deserve humanity, respect and fair treatment. And if you're being honest when it comes to immigration policies in most of these developed countries many of the changes being proposed are definitely you know political. But yeah we're hoping that you know the current Prime Minister would you know influence some changes to couple of immigration policies especially when it has to do with those on the pathway to settlement.

[00:03:15]Now another person you know mentioned in our in one of our post that please show some respect for immigrants this time around. You were watching closely we were watching closely and our contributions deserve respect. Never look down on care workers or dismiss them as unskilled. At least take the time to understand what they do every day instead of insulting them. Many of them owed a grudge against the labor government because of your attitude. And if I'm being sincere I mean many people who talk about the care workers or those on the care worker visa they keep referring to them as unskilled or low-skilled, you know, immigrants, which is absolutely unfair considering the kind of work they do, considering they take up jobs that many UK citizens are not willing to take up. Yeah, anyway, that's the reality of things at the moment. Now, another person said, "The immigration system shouldn't be fair for all. It should be fair for the British people." Which is a valid point. I mean, they are there to serve the British people. However, there are lots of international laws that, you know, ensure that countries like the UK, you know, actually fair to those who come into the country, especially for legal immigrants. They're not here to, you know, they're not extorting from the system. Instead, they're contributing massively back to the system and paying their taxes, paying their national insurance. The cost of renewing visas in the UK is absolutely insane. I mean, if you're a single person planning to renew your visa, you're looking roughly around I mean, you're looking at roughly around 3,500 to 4,500 pounds in fees, which is absolutely horrendous. I mean, how many British people would actually have that kind of amount sitting down in their bank account? So, yeah, I think they definitely do deserve to be treated with uh respect.

[00:05:03]Another person said, "Consider immigrants who pay 40% tax. We are heavy contributors to the economy. Don't paint us with the same brush." You look at the policies they're planning to prioritize those who are on the 45% tax bracket, that is those that make um six figures.

[00:05:21]Now, people who make for you know, who contribute 40% tax and are coming up to say, "You know what? Don't categorize us as those who, you know, earn um you know, below 50,000. We earn 40% and we want you tightening the immigration rule along with skilled workers visa rules."

[00:05:38]Now, this person is definitely a British person and she's You You or she is trying to, you know, um reinforce the fact that don't just target those who are selling seekers, those who are milking the economy, also focus on those who are skilled worker. I don't know the motive behind this, you know, this particular comment, but I think it's completely ridiculous for, you know, this person to say, you know what?

[00:06:00]Target every single person despite the fact that these skilled workers are picking up jobs that you don't want to do and they're actually contributing back to the economy in a massive way.

[00:06:09]Now, someone else said, "Immigrants are one of the highest tax-paying group in the UK. Less likely to commit crime, definitely, yes. Less likely to commit crime because it would affect them in many ways. I mean, many immigrants who come in here as skilled worker, we kind of tiptoe, we kind of, you know, are being careful what we do because whatever we do in here has massive implications. It has implication on your ability to live and work in the UK. It has massive implication on, you know, you being able to sustain your job and the likelihood of people who are immigrants in the UK committing crime is extremely low because no matter years we spend in this country, no matter how many, you know, um you know, how many years we spend as immigrant living here, we still try as much as possible to respect the law in here because but I mean, as people will say on media on the media that no matter how long you stay in here as an African in the UK, you can only be British, you can't be English. I mean, there are a lot of question around that, but that's not the purpose of this of this video.

[00:07:09]Now, someone else said, "Did you say to make immigration system fair? Fair when you propose to change goal post in the middle of football game. Remove fair in your statement. You play to win by every means possible, but not fair. Retrospective application of the proposed 10 years route is not fair.

[00:07:29]It's bullying of legal immigrants who followed the rules and have continued to play by the rules." That's That sounds really smart. And, yeah, nobody's asking the government or, you know, trying to influence the government not to make changes to, you know, the number of years requirements to getting ILR, it's within the right of the government to make changes whenever they want.

[00:07:50]However, applying those changes retrospectively is where the outcry comes in. It's where people are a bit worried. It's where people feel it's unfair. It's callous for the government to do that because these are people who came into the country because of the promise that there's going to be the chance to apply for a permanent residence after 5 years of contributing, 5 years of putting bigger back to the economy. Now, saying within, you know, halfway into getting to the number of years required that you can't actually apply anymore because we're planning to now increase it to 10 years. It's a modern version of slavery because a master can always change his mind anytime. And this is, you know, the government, um, you know, acting very much unfair when it comes to changes to immigration and policy. Now, another person said, "Well done. Kindly request not to take a U-turn on immigration reform. There's nothing wrong in asking care workers and other low-paid workers to wait a bit longer for indefinite leave to remain.

[00:08:53]All dependents should also wait longer for ILR. They are not asked to leave the country, but to wait a little bit longer for ILR, what which is fair enough."

[00:09:04]Now, I mean, this a valid point. Uh, like I said, nobody's asking the government not to increase the number of years, but don't apply it retrospectively for those who are already here. Now, this person is saying, "Oh, but, you know, those who work as dependents, those who those who are currently dependents, those who work in care or any low-skilled paid job should have to wait longer." Now, there's a lot of context around this really because sometimes we don't measure people's impact by how much they earn. Yes, I understand the higher you earn, the higher you earn, the higher the tax you get to pay. However, have you also look at it from the point of that these people are actually doing jobs that the British we don't want to do because they're not being paid well enough.

[00:09:43]So, you have to think about it. And also think about the implication of treating these people unfairly and how it impacts that sector that these individuals are currently filling the gap in. So, it's something that is really important to have you think about. Now, this person also said, "Stay away from retrospective implementation and your career will be longer." Which is quite hilarious. I find this really funny.

[00:10:05]Um but, the truth is yeah, applying retrospectively is completely unfair.

[00:10:08]But, yeah, congratulations to the the um the home secretary for keeping her job and being able to you know, be part of the new cabinet with the new prime minister and the bonus. So, if you have any thoughts around a couple of these comments, and I think I need to mention that, you know, some of these comments people are, you know, sharing their thoughts and their opinion in the comment section. But, I I hope you people know that all of these comments makes no difference to the decision of the home secretary um as regards change to immigration policy.

[00:10:35]So, I know we all need an avenue to vent and also share our opinion, but commenting on a social media post doesn't make any difference. I just wanted to put that out there.
